Rock Werchter 2025

Ok, a few days to process it all. Here is my review of my first Rock Werchter.

After and epic journey involving a ferry and 3 trains, we arrived in Brussels to be hit by a wall of heat, such as I’ve never experienced at a festival before. Nevertheless, I found the (free) train to Leuven and the bus to Werchter to be wonderfully well organised.

Getting into the Hive My Space campsite was a breeze and being shown to our tents was a nice touch. Our neighbours were friendly and the live band karaoke on the first night was a fantastic start to the weekend. I lost my voice from singing along.

Thursday. I had a pretty solid plan for each day, but plans never seem to survive festivals. Also, sometimes it’s good to watch something with the rest of your group that you hadn’t even considered. With that in mind, Mother Mother was the first act I saw, followed by Amyl, De La Soul, half of Fontaines, all of London Grammar, Deftones accompanied by a beautiful sunset and Linkin Park.

As I’ve mentioned before, Friday was one of my all-time favourite festival days. Pvris > Jasmine 4t > The Backseat Lovers > Weezer > Girl in Red > Caribou > Underworld > Green Day was an insane run. Got near the front for most. Watched Underworld from outside the Barn as the sun set and the atmosphere was just joyful. First time I’ve seen Green Day live and they blew me away.

Saturday was a bit quieter, following approximately 2 hours sleep the previous night. I caught Almost Monday, Bright Eyes, MRCY, Amenra and Beth Gibbons, but nothing really grabbed me until Beth played a couple of Portishead tracks, which was something I never thought I’d see. Following that, i really enjoyed Elbow, Nothing but Thieves and Wisp, before having an early night instead of hanging around for the headliners.

Sunday was obviously a bit of a struggle with the weather and rapidly deteriorating legs and feet. However, we sheltered in Klub C and saw Remy Bond - a bit WTF, but unexpectedly brilliant; Wunderhorse - intense and amazing; and Foster the People - psychedelic and euphoric (thanks to whoever on here recommended i watch them). Then followed an incredible 1-2 of Overmono and Rufus Du Sol. Danced non-stop for 2 hours and ended singing “music is better when we’re together” with some of my best people. After that, we enjoyed Olivia Rodrigo, again feeling very lucky to see her as i almost certainly wouldn’t have bought tickets to one of her shows. The final set from 2 many DJs was the icing on the cake.

So, TLDR: Amazing. Highlights probably Mother Mother, London Grammar, Weezer, Girl in Red, Underworld, Green Day, Nothing but Thieves, Overmono & Rufus du Sol.

Other highlights: The organisation, the Apero bars, our neighbours, most of the crowds.

Lowlights: The dust on the first 3 days, the rain on the last day; the crowd during Linkin Park, particularly the two 6 foot 5 men who decided to climb on each others’ shoulders and then fall on top of us.

I’d recommend this festival to pretty much anyone. Many UK festivals could learn a lot from them.

There any images of what the hastily assembled headliners drew by way of a crowd?

There were plenty there. This isn't Glastonbury.

Not my thing, but much more production than I expected. Clearly headliner level, won't be long until he's headlining R&L or even Download.

My 2 cents

TLDR: Had an amazing time in RW once again and will buy next year tickets eyes closed. Some rant at the end and highlights in bold.

So after falling in love with RW last year, giving me exactly what I like (eclectic music done by passionate and sincere artists) wifey and I bought tickets day one. Like a lot of us, I started complaining about the line-up and especially the last 2 "pop days" so I was a bit apprehensive about this edition.

Arrived Wednesday and realized I forgot how nice Belgian people are and how well organized the festival is. We went for the full comfy zone on the Resort so everything was pretty easy and we instantly felt home. Party at the Central Park was great with a really funny karaoke party !

Thursday, we really liked Glintsal to start with. Grade 2 was cool but Yseult looked more like a parody than a real genuine show so we left to attend the nice show of Amyl. Planned to see Lambrini Girls right after and was mad of the rescheduling cause we missed them going to one of my best highlights of the whole edition Jacob Collier. This time I realized I forgot how beautiful the Barn is and JC show was amazing in it. Had a smile on my face the whole set and was so amazed that I couldn't focus on Ezra Collective still in awe of what I just witnessed. Missed Fontaines D.C. tho but London Grammar was nice. Saw a little of Heilung and Deftones before digging a good spot for the main event. Huge regret missing Iggy and Nia but Linkin Park was our absolute expectation of RW50. Don't actually know if they delivered or if it was just my teenage dream finally coming true but I liked it a lot and even made some friends in the pit.

Friday was an anticipated day too. Only woke up to attend Jasmine.4.t which I'm curious to follow her evolution in years to come having already powerful songs. Wet Leg was nice/meh. Celeste got me on the last two songs ("Strange" is a masterpiece). We went second row for girl in red, once again smiling the whole set, we loved it. Couldn't get wifey to enjoy JV&B (which I really wanted to see tho) so we went to listen to the pretty tunes of Lola Young. Skipped Simple Minds to take a piss, grab a drink, eat a meal and get front rows for Fat Dog. Won't elaborate much, if you were there you know, if not go see them live. Easily top 3 act of my RW. Purple Disco Machine was cool but I regret missing two-thirds of Green Day after reading your reviews.

Saturday missed Jacotène but almost monday was cool. Found Tom Odell quite boring, MRCY was cool and Amenra too even tho it was quite hard to get deep into it while singer was whispering and Goldband was throwing heavy bass. Next act was an absolute fail: wanted to see both Peter Cat Recording Co. and Mr Belt & Wezol, decided to go to the Jupiler towers which was too crowdy to enjoy and switched too late to the Slope to enjoy the PCRC... Damiano cool but missed Gurriers for second rows at RAYE's goddess-like performance, which I'll write about later. I enjoyed NOFUN! and Cymande but less than Maribou State with an incredible Barn sound system and Barry Can't Swim after.

Hard to get up on Sunday with fatigue and rain so our first act was Finneas which got me on few songs. Foster The People wasn't my taste but wifey liked. Missed Goose to get surprised by Dimitri Vegas. Expected a "special RW set" like the closing one but wasn't so this time we quickly ran to enjoy Somebody's Child. Had a moment during "Jungle" and "We could start a war". Gracie Abrams was nice, Jay Lamborghini & Kenzie Ferrari were fun. Didn't think I'd like Noah Kahan that much, listened to it a lot more since then. Wonderful time dancing to Durand Jones & The Indications and USED (not the same kind of dance tho). Olivia Rodrigo felt nice/meh before the exceptional closing of 2manydjs and the funny chaos at the end.

All in all, felt the emotions I wanted/needed even during the less anticipated days. Bonded wifey and I even more with beautiful shared memories. Maybe RW bookers know more my tastes than I do after all...

That said, on a darker side, I totally relate to this https://www.reddit.com/r/RockWerchter/comments/1lsvt35/if_youre_gonna_talk_through_the_whole_concert/
We managed to enjoy the fest because we were following our own made rules like "never go in front of an electro act" or "avoid crowdy spots when possible" but jaw was still clenched a few times (already way too much tho).
Dumbass egocentric people who think :
- speaking during shows is okay,
- bumping people to get close 5 minutes before the beginning of the show while others secured a spot an hour ago is okay,
- doing those late bumps with 10 liters of beers is even more okay
- or even with a pizza just to throw the plate at a random's head minutes after while laughing.
Cherry on the top was a group of people who started a VIDEO CALL next to me during RAYE's most emotional moment. Took me nearly the whole set to calm my anger of them disrespecting both the artist and people around. Refrained myself from going berserk knowing it would just ruin the moment for more people.
Took "revenge" today watching the nearly same set RAYE did in Montreux Jazz Festival in replay. Mixed the still fresh memories of the show with the absolute masterpiece of sound she delivered there. I feel fulfilled now (even teared up).

Either to relive the thing or to catch the artist I missed and everyone's praising, I really hope RW will upload some replay like last year. They seemed to be on Proximus but like a lot of us, I don't have a paid account.

Next year rumors are already interesting but as said before, I trust the bookers even more now. Like Turnstile say "You got to see it live to get it", and I did for artist I didn't expected too.
Side note: I saw A LOT of Turnstile merch this year. I'm wondering which stage they could play as I don't imagine not stage diving (different from crowd surfing) during their show and no stage allows it.

Thanks for reading and sorry for any typos or weird English 🫶

This was my view from in front of the path. Plenty behind me. A lot were there.

Thursday

The busiest day by far. Got ourselves to the park a little too early on a glorious sunny day, but were pleasantly surprised they had a band playing at the entrance while we waited, lots of smiley people. Onto the freshly made, untouched park to grab a quick beer and watch Glinstal, not knowing anything about them, but their humour and songs were perfect for an opening act. Quickly, into Klub C to see Grade 2 with a short, heavy, catchy sound. Not particularly memorable but pretty good nevertheless. Then onto the barn to see Mother Mother, as previously mentioned, the sound seemed off to me and was the first disappointment (maybe my ears were still ringing from Grade 2). Grabbed some more drinks and walked into the barn for the only Yseult song I knew. Managed to catch a bit of Amyl and The Sniffers in passing, but didn't think much of it as we had our first chill/rest by the north west walls, same again for De La Soul, a little stop gap, which was a shame as I was expecting a little more. With the time, we accidentally got ourselves to the front to watch Lambrini Girls on the slope. Probably the highlight of the day as Phoebe constantly jeered up the crowd in her angsty ways. Mosh pits and chaos ensued. There were a couple of moans in the crowd, but they quite clearly stated what they were about at the beginning of the show, so no love lost there. Lay down on the grass outside Klub C to Ezra Collective, asking the crowd to sing to their instrumentals, I dunno I didn't get it, but it gave me time to catch my breath again. Sextile were great on the slope for a dance as I got my energy back, and it got me thinking this is probably the best stage to be at. Caught 20 minutes of Heilung but got bored after the novelty wore off, so headed off to Iggy Pop where tears started rolling down my face and felt forever grateful I was in the presence of such a wonderful festival with wonderful people. And then Linkin Park, not seen a crowd like it at Rock Werchter, I think I saw there were 90,000 in the park at that time. We managed to get a spot halfway down the food/drinks stand, but to say it was uncomfortable would have been an understatement. People were starting to get rowdy and half way through the set it became too much for us, and we shuffled back to a more comfortable spot where we could enjoy the music again. Again, incredibly happy to be in the presence of such a great band and a flawless setlist.

Friday

Had a bit of a lie-in due to 15 hours in the park the previous day, but wasn't expecting 30 minutes to queue at the entrance, so only got to hear a couple of The Scratch's songs. They sounded okay. After, we stayed around the slope to take in that area as we hadn't seen much of it due to the busy Thursday schedule. Hydrated and Suntanned, another sunny day. Jasmine.4.t started playing, but no one was really interested. The Backseat Lovers were heavier in sound than I was expecting, for some reason I had a thought that they'd be a bit dreary. I saw mixed reviews for Weezer, but as a fanboy, my 20-year-old self returned and again crying pursued as I sang all their songs. I thought they fit the bill perfectly, and their awkwardness only enhanced my experience as they said, 'anyone got anything to say? No? Well I guess we just rock then'. Not sure what I did for the next couple of hours, maybe the heat was getting to me. I found myself at the barn to see Lola Young, having no expectations, I found myself drawn into and charmed by her chaotic performance. Was it all an act? Who knows, but it won me over as the whole crowd sang her last song. Had to have a rest after so went to the north west walls and heard Simple Minds in the background, I didn't have the energy to enjoy it, but it was amazing to see how much of a crowd they brought in. After a quick recharge, we went to see underworld, where I spent the majority of the time dancing. And then to Green Day, remembering how busy it was yesterday, hung at the back a little more where we could enjoy the entire show. It was a nice moment as I remembered being in the exact same spot when I saw them in 2010.

Saturday

By the time Saturday came around, I had lost my stamina a bit, and there wasn't anyone particular I wanted to see so came into the park a little later. We got a good spot for Beth Gibbons, which was a treat, and the barn quickly filled up when they were playing the Portishead songs. As others have said, I felt incredibly privileged to be in the presence of such a distinguished vocalist. We stuck around for Elbow, who put on a great performance. I didn't realise they had such a following in Belgium. I also thought Maribou State were excellent, having not known too much about them, they are now firmly cemented into my playlist for the long term. We gave YungBlud a chance for half an hour but it didn't really work for us, sorry. Nothing against the lad, but it just didn't take us in, hope him all the best. As we left, so did many others. Fair play to put yourself in like that, you get the kudos at least. It was a strange day, but at least we were able to be more particular about the acts we saw, and then we got to see the full set.

Sunday

The rainy day. Which I kind of liked as it meant we got a different experience at the festival and mostly around the barn and klub c (which was preplanned). Started at Wunderhorse in Klub C with a short 40 minutes, don't know why it was so short, felt like they could have done a much longer set. Got a good position at Foster The People, I guess you could say I fit in the casual fan category, they sound much heavier and electronic live than on record. I was looking forward to Goose, but with a small overlap, we had to watch them outside. I don't know if it was because I was outside, but I didn't enjoy it as much as when they were on the main stage in 2016, and it felt practically the same setlist. Still good to chalk it off the list. Soulwax, wow, these guys were good, but after 30 minutes, it felt like my eardrums had permanent damage, so I had to watch them outside. A++ to the people doing the crazy dance in the rain, was certainly entertaining. Rufus du Sol good but kind of forgettable, see also Used : Live. 2 seconds of Oliva Rodrigo f**king awful. 2manydjs, dancing in the rain. f**king brilliant, what a way to finish. Maybe they should do this every year.

tldr: another incredible time at rock werchter and leuven the town I was staying in (as always). Very little to moan about, the festival got mega busy on the Thursday night, uncomfortable at times, I know this is down to its own success but I am worried that the more relaxed times will be a thing of the past, although Saturday and Sunday felt more comfortable. It's always feels bitter sweet at the end. I was meant to attend in 2008 and 2009 but personal circumstances prevented me, my first time was in 2010, then again too late in 2016, and 2018, covid hit and stopped me going for a few years, and now 7 years later in 2025 it felt too much of a gap. Sigh. I have now made it my aim to attend more frequently, I am getting older but still felt comfortable attending

Wednesday

10 hour journey or thereabouts, but really just a few short jaunts to various transports. Train > Eurostar > Train > Shuttle Bus. Got in, got our teepee, went off for some beers in Central Park. It’s laid out so well. So flat and so neat and so clean. Didn’t get to bed until 4am after spending the night in the barn structure listening to Last Resort numerous times.

Thursday

Here comes the sun, do do do, and it’s not alright. Crawling out of the boiling hot tent ready to be cooked all day. What a smorgasbord today was. Hardest I’ve ever known it to get round, and hard to find a good spot for Fontaines amongst the hanging-around-drinkers. Frontman from De La Soul referred to us as Utrecht haha.

20250703_174613.thumb.jpg.217660c10007677df84504932a904158.jpg

Met some people from Bridgenorth who have been coming for years who thought it had been over-sold. I don’t agree. I just think the line-up strength and it being the first day, and also dry, meant you had maximum occupancy at all times. It actually tailed off a little during Deftones, so people were clearly using that for a bit of pre Linkin Park tent time. LP were great. I was at Chester’s last ever gig, so to be able to come back and hear these songs again, was beautiful. Walk back to camp was dense as hell. Didn’t learn about the west walls exit until Saturday.

Friday

Belly full of spek en ei, in the pit for Wet Leg. Sitters refusing to stand until the took to the stage. Lads behind me finally got up and faced the other way. What for? What for??? So weird. Someone on the forum said Wet Leg are better at festivals than at their own gigs, and now I can say I believe that. Rianne was having a great time, with both main members currently on a push-pull system where one of them is a sex leopard and the other stands at the back like the final scene in the Blair Witch Project.

Couldn’t hack the heat towards the end of Weezer so took off for Celeste. Opposite of interested prior to today, but wow, she’s got quiet intensity and what a voice!

I don’t quite know what came over me during Fat Dog. Maybe the 26 tiny beers and 4 cocodamols. I was a whirlwind, thrashing about in front of my new saviour, abandoning my girlfriend to throw myself into the pit. A man at the end hugged me and we played a game of hat swapsies. Insane show, insane crowd. Love you all.

Green Day are now the band I’ve had the longest gap between seeing (August 2004 to now). Still great, and got emotional during Good Riddance.

Saturday

Took a day in Leuven, got back in time for Raye. She’s lovely but I don’t connect with the big band package. Saw Cymande after, doing it so well. Don’t think I’d even heard of them before, despite being from London.

Met a girl from the Netherlands who had been working the festival. While we ate our loempias she told me Bludfest 3 is in the Netherlands next year. No idea where she got that from, but I’ll believe it anyway.

Sunday

Wunderhorse had me in a frenzy. Short set, both on paper and in reality, with the wannabe affectations of the frontman wasting a lot of time (it doesn’t take that long to do up your shoe!!!!) leading to the starting and immediate stopping of my new favourite The Rope. I forgive you though mate, keep on rocking.

I learned of Pommelien Thijs through an earlier Werchter announcement, and I’m glad I did. Lovely pop songs from a great personality. The crowd were having a great singalong all around me. Wonderful atmosphere.

Allie X I’ve been a fan of for over a decade and been cruelly denied her live show through her cancellations. She told us this wasn’t really her crowd, and then proceeded to do mostly tracks from her latest album – which I do like, although it was marred by the best ones being missing. She’s good, but I feel like I only got a taste. Something above a PA.

I thought Somebody’s Child was just a guy with some backing but they’re a fully established band who play well and have good hooks, like if Inhaler were any good. They’re a Dirty Hit signing, and I fear we have a star on our hands here.

Gracie Abrams was better than I expected. That’s So True is a great song.

Everything Olivia Rodrigo did was great. Probably go and see her again in a few albums time.

Rained a lot the last day and night, but the only mud was on the exit to the shuttle.

Nice write up. I think next year is definitely the year, i said that this year but finances couldn't cut it.

I've always wondered what the transport for the other events at the festival park is like, such as for Werchter Boutique and TW Classic. Does anyone know if they run shuttle buses to and from Leuven like they do for Rock Werchter? I had such a good time, I'm wondering whether to book 2 weeks in the town and see Linkin Park for Wercher Parklife the weekend before next year

R&L? Literally an identical gap to me, over 2 decades. How I managed to miss them for so long, when I've 'accidentally' seen others like the Foos/Metallica etc. half a dozen times or more is baffling.

Does anyone know if they run shuttle buses to and from Leuven like they do for Rock Werchter?

This year timetables near the shuttle bus stop contained information for the dates of TW Classic, RW and Boutique. So I think the'll also make it available for Parklife.

I don't think they've released anything of note in between.

Well they haven't haven't they lol. Both FEAR and The Connection were decent albums and they've gone from Academies like some have stayed playing those 4th/5th down main spots to Arenas. Even in a case of them just getting fresh fans in from a new ages group, 12.5k plus as venue compared to 5k max is a bit of a difference. Only one as low as 12.5k I believe too
