Dj Derek

Booked him for a student event one year. All the other groups were coming in with ridiculous requests for riders trying to be cheeky, see what they could get away with ( 3x bottles of Ciroc vodka, Crate of Red Stripe, mixers, sparkling water etc etc).

DJ Derek just wanted a multipack of Newcastle Brown Ale . He was the only person who's rider got fulfilled that night.

Saw him years ago in a random bar in Reading. At one point he banged a funk tune on and went outside for a ciggie. He got chatting to some guys/fans and forgot about the fact he was DJing. Then ran frantically back in when the CD went to the next track....which was, weirdly, a kids party version of happy birthday 😂

Styled it out cos he's a legend and a great night was had by all. Would have loved to see him at glasto!

Love it when I drive past that mural (and get to talk about him to my kids). Rip Derek.

I saw this portrait in a Charity shop in Oxford today and was wondering did Dj Derek of Bristol fame ever play Glastonbury.

I remember seeing a documentary about this legend years ago.

Was it for sale (I know this may seem a daft question!)

DJ Derek was all about the Minidisks. I've had that chatting to him outside while having a fag experience - please to report that he stayed in character and kept the Jamaican patois up throughout.

Never saw him at Glasto, lost count of the amount of times saw him playing around Bristol.  A true legend.

Still so tragic about his death, he was at the time probably getting more publicity/love than at any time in his career.

Actually it must have been but there wasn't a price on the front maybe on the back. Strange as there was also a portrait of Dj Skylarking. ill be going back there in a few days

If you could check for me I would be really grateful. I'm from Oxford originally - I used to put on events in the Bully, Cellar, Zodiac etc.

I am afraid Dj Derek has gone The price on the other painting is £10 so  I am assuming that was the price for the portrait of Derek.

Thanks for taking a look for me. That's a shame - but I'm sure it's going to a good home 🙂

    • Personally if it was me now, I would be grabbing a green camping ticket with the knowledge closer when I've refreshed that I can still choose general if I want to....you can't do the opposite!    I would say if you are happy to watch your headliners and big bands further back to be able to see who you actually plan to later then yes it is fine. Its a much difference experience to any other festival especially food wise and camping surrounds.    Once you're in the arena as well you're not going back unless you've got a gap. If I go again I'll be going with the option of not trying to push the front and enjoying further back as you actually put too much pressure on it than the time take away can forget to enjoy other acts.
    • No complaints about the sound. We were like 2nd set of steps facing stage right in like the middle row.
    • On the whole then, yay or nay...I've had a look on festivals united and there's people who seem converted by Rock Im Park, I can imagine it might be different if it was a washout as RaR is tarmac.   The hotel side would be more to convince the non campers if it's an option. On my first visit to rock am ring we were shuttled into the area where you could stick the car next to the tent which was fantastic as it meant zero lugging of camping gear.
    • An interesting thing this. Having seem them several times (some of their gigs veer into back catalogue niche territoty), I partly agree they arent Pyramid material (theough modern defeinition of 'bangers' although I could see them headlinging the Other stage) I can't think of another festival in the world that they couldn't headline - Reading, IoW, BST, Rock Wercheter, Roskilde, etc etc.
