Four day week is the quickest and simplest way to improve standards of living, physical and mental health outcomes and reduce CO2.

Also will help maintain full employment in the face of AI nicking everyones jobs.

Ai won't nick eveyonestjobs. I remember choosing my first career of electrician. Cos in the early days of computing and now it looks impossible to automate?

It's also causing a rift in Stroud

I'm not surprised about what that says about totnes.cos I used to live in the next town.got a fond memory of a night out with an old traveller friend) in Totnes, where a lovely attached herself to me and (first words we exchanged) told me she was coming home with me.

4 day working is the way forward, I think all studies have shown there are multiple positives and barely any negatives.

This right here is one of the many reasons I love this man. He comes across as so likeable to me and actually seems like a normal person when he’s in front of regular people; it’s such a polar opposite to Sunak.

20%cut in output means 20% less of what we want to have.

More than 800 serving officials in the US and Europe have signed a statement warning that their own governments' policies on the Israel-Gaza war could amount to "grave violations of international law".

Quote

The "transatlantic statement", a copy of which was passed to the BBC, says their administrations risk being complicit in "one of the worst human catastrophes of this century" but that their expert advice has been sidelined.

It's not a 20% drop in output tho as proven many times

It's 20% less input. So a 20%  drop in output if effort is equal across all hours.

which it obviously isn't. No one is working as hard on a friday afternoon as they are on a tuesday morning

If there's twenty percent fewer nursing hours there's twenty percent less nursing output. The gain from Monday morning is marginal against the twenty percent loss.

Most studies suggest that it's more like a 2-5% drop in output, because people maintain more efficiency, don't waste as much time/energy on commuting, and there's less sense of trying to squeeze in personal admin on either lunch breaks or while at work.

I have a friend who agreed to a 18% paycut to get a 4 day week, and he reckons he gets the exact same amount done as his colleagues that do 5 day weeks.

I know that I'd comfortably get as much done in 3 days as I currently do in 5.

And Neil don't bother replying to this, I've got you on ignore.

Wonder what Skippy thinks about the greens localism, when he takes no interest in local issues. To the extent of not being aware of local issues

No way I would in 3 days. 4 I probably would in most weeks but not 3.

Doesn't necessarily apply to every profession equally. Nurses work 3 or 4 days a week anyway long hours. Was more meaning typical mon-fri office jobs. People aren't robots.

There's also various studies evidencing that if people are doing shift work, they tend to perform much better in a 4-day week where they have 2.5-3.5 day gaps to transition between different shift patterns.

There are ways in any shift pattern to make things better for the employee that much is clear. We used to work 6 day weeks, no reason 4 can't be the norm and it probs will be in the future. Work life balance would be brilliant.

That’s not the case, studies and trials have shown that output remains the same if not higher on a 4 day week because people are much more productive. People are happier as they get more time with their loved ones and more time to themselves which equates to a more productive worker.

Wouldn't have had Neil down as on the side of the Victorian mill owners when faced with the new fangled "weekend".

What's your stance on sending small children up chimneys?

Wouldn't you?

No matter what he tries to look like on here, it's very clear what his actual politics are.

He'll also reply to this even though he knows I've got him on ignore.

    • Crikey.   I remember Muse cancelling a Lolla headline set in 2017 due to a massive thunderstorm after only 3 songs. Clearly this is an area of the world where the storms don't f**k around.
    • I still think they might take another shot at the normal weekend.    I'm also pretty sure this exact same speculation was happening after the last one.
    • Meanwhile in Chicago. Rained overnight at Lolla. Now they pushed back opening til the afternoon. But thunderstorms and lightning forecast. Maybe if the city invested in proper drainage they couldve tried to salvage the day.
    • Wasn't just me who thought it was either oversold or inadequately setup for the event then? For Pride, over the weekend, where there's also acts in the large blue marquee that was to the right of the "arena" (for want of a better term), it's probably much better as people are dispersed more. Thought the band were great, as was Nick, though he was clearly struggling with his voice at times.
    • I got in for £11.25 in the end, which was absolutely ridiculously good value, and made the queues and overselling of the venue much more tolerable! Sniping in on other people’s unwanted tickets on the day of an event might become my new hobby I think 🥳
