U.S. Presidential Election

Why is anyone predicting how the 2028 election will go now? The first guess is almost always wrong. And I say this as someone who was adamant 2024 would see neither Biden nor Trump stand, yet we were one dreadful debate from Biden carrying out his plan to stand again (and indeed he thinks he shouldn't have dropped out).

dont think he will be the next president if they get free and fair elections .... but that seems unlikely as Trump is wanting to do a 3rd term , probably wont live that long and theyll install vance and no elections

unfortunately I think it's entirely possible.  We will have to see how the supreme court pushes back, if at all.
if they do allow him to have a third term, then maybe Obama will throw is hat in the ring again.  Not that I think Obama is a particularly good man - but he certainly could shake things up.

Trump is really f**king over his own voters with these trade wars and tarriffs. Countries aren't going to let themselves be bullied by Trump, and in the vast majority of cases, what the US imports matters more to the US than what they export. Countries can lose a customer base more than the US can lose raw materials (or 1st/2nd stage processed goods in the case of China).

The US is down for a lot of pain, and the rapidly declining value of the dollar will only get worse.

I guess he's doing it for a couple of reasons...one to get a better trading deal, two to bring back and/or help industries in US. The problem is if he does manage to get a better deal then tariffs are dropped and number two doesn't happen, and as you say at same time it could lead to economic pain, more inflation etc.

The thing is, it only gets a better trading deal if other countries back down and go "oh sorry sir, of course we'll do what you want". But none of them will, after the responses by Columbia, Canada, China. Everyone will prefer to just have less trade with an unpredictable America than cede rights and lose out that way.

seems so...have to see if Trump backs down with these latest tariffs...

mentioned it elsewhere and probably on this thread before ... the forum software ( currently ) seems to only link embed to twitter and not any other sites .... hopefully that will change in the future and any updates can and will be posted from other sites . Glastonbury official also hasnt yet made the move away its alternatives are also still very quiet .

as mentioned elsewhere, its generic forums software [invision], only tweaked for better integration with the content manager system that i wrote from scratch  to manage the website. the linking options within the forums software get updated regularly, but also requires iggy (or whoever) to update this forums installation for new features to get installed.

Will there still be elections by then

No.

Someone upthread asked why Trump was enacting policies that are bad for his base. Trump is utterly transactional in everything he does. The base cannot give him anything anymore as in a free and fair election he cannot run. So I think he is purposely running the country towards chaos which will foment civil unrest. He then declares martial law and suspends elections.

I'm a socialist - so for me, Berine and AOC aren't as left as I'd like them to be, and I find a lot of what they do performative.  But a good thing is a good thing and these days I will take a good thing from just about anyone trying to a good thing.

The democratic party has so far learned nothing from this past election.  They are watching these AOC and Bernie rallies and doing absolutely nothing build on their momentum. One would think they see what's happening here and start to back "progressive" candidates, especially with so-called democracy on the line - but they don't. Instead establishment democrats will try and run Kamala again and they will lose.

Well...maybe AOC will be the next candidate, you never know. She might still be a bit young, and they might not want to go with another smart women because that might upset all the dumb men. She definitely has the x factor though, she can talk, good at media, good in debates, and would probably get more people out to vote, especially younger voters...but she also might put a lot of people off...there were a whole load of people who thought Harris was too progressive. Maybe a safer bet is someone like Tim Walz.

But, a long way to go. Who knows where things will be in 2028.

I think AOC would get people out there. She will also put a lot of people off.  I think she does have that "cult of personality" thing that (sadly) seems to matter more than policy these days.

The Democrats strategy is always trying to get Republicans to vote for them instead of the Republican candidate, which has failed them again and again.  It has alienate their base and caused Trump to win, when they should be throwing their weight behind where there is momentum - look at these Bernie and AOC rallies - there is momentum there, its undeniable.  Seems like Democrats would rather let fascists with than shift their agenda slightly leftward.  It's a shame.

AOC did some interesting polling (i use that word loosely as she just used her instagram) where she asked her constituents why some of them voted for both her AND trump.  Largely, they said they felt they knew who she was and what she stood for, but also felt Kamala was "a cop" and "fake" and Trump was a known evil.  I can't quite make sense of that logic myself but it happened.

I dont know where we will be in 28.  But I don't believe that we live in a democracy anymore.  And I don't believe that the american people have faith in their elections anymore.

But they have to win in those swing states, not just New York and California. They need to win across the middle, not just the coasts.

I would argue that they should be trying to win the votes of the people who stay home and don't vote rather than the people who already have a candidate.  At this point, if you're a conservative who is voting for trump, you're brainwashed.  You aren't straying.

well some may if Trump messes up the economy.

But yes agree need to also get those who didn't vote last time to the ballot box, so is that another smart female liberal from coasts, or an old fashioned american man like Biden or Walz? I guess AOC could get younger voters out, especially in student areas...but is that where they need them?

Personally I think they should go with someone from the left, see how they do....but skeptical how well they will do, and if they lose it's probably Vance.

Is it just me or is the BBC totally sane-washing Trump? Considering the litany of awful sh*t he has perpetrated in just 100 days, I'd hope for at least some objective reporting, but their coverage of him seems to completely pander to him and his base.

    • https://x.com/amirtibon/status/2083054470871535853   Some thoughts on the Gaza agreement announced overnight, which despite my reservations and concerns, I hope will be implemented. 1. Donald Trump is trying to collect "wins" and "achievements" ahead of the midterm elections. His party is entering that election at a disadvantage, but because Democrats may choose weak and unpopular candidates in specific states, much like Republicans did in 2022, there's a reason for Trump to at least try achieving a surprising result like the one Biden secured four years ago.   2. The will to provide Trump such a "win" was an important motivation for all sides involved in this agreement: Hamas, Netanyahu, Qatar, Egypt, UAE and Turkey. All of them hope, each for their own reasons, that the transactional president will remember their role in the agreement and the positive media coverage it has generated and will continue to generate. You can like it or not, but that's the nature of diplomacy, especially in the Middle East, under Trump.   3. Netanyahu and his band of liars in the Israeli media (and the last few suckers in the American media still buying his spin) are already trying to oversell the agreement and present it in terms that contradict the Board of Peace statements and briefings. Of course, the October 7 Prime Minister can't just say the truth on this one, which goes something like: "I'm trying to stay on good terms with Trump ahead of an election here in Israel that will determine my personal fate and whether or not I go to jail in 2027."   4. For Hamas, the agreement is a way to buy time and survive, which is basically the organization's overarching goal since October 7. They lost most of their leadership and thousands of their fighters; they will also, I believe, give up some of their weapons to the new Gaza-based Palestinian government, which is a good thing. But at the bottom of all their decisions is a simple calculation: being able to say, "we committed the most deadly and humiliating attack against Israel since the start of the conflict, and survived as a movement and an organization to tell about it."   5. Hamas was able to say that yesterday, before the agreement was signed, and it can also say that today, after the conclusion of the negotiations. So in that regard, the agreement is preferable to the murky post-war reality that preceded it, in which Hamas was recruiting again thousands of young fighters, holding on to all its weapons, and controlling 99% of Gaza's population, making money off people buying fuel and cigarettes. Changing even a part of that terrible reality, by collecting some of the weapons and allowing progress on reconstruction under a non-Hamas government, is better. It means coming to terms with the fact that Israel under this government failed to dismantle Hamas and allowed its survival even before this agreement was signed.   6. Do I think the agreement will be fully implemented over the next 300 days, as I understand the timeline? I'm highly skeptical. But I'm also asking: what are the alternatives? Netanyahu, in his quest for political survival at all costs, ignored David Ben-Gurion's national security strategy of seeking short and decisive wars, which was based on Israel's unique internal and external challenges that make it dangerous for this country to have long wars of attrition. The result is an Israel that is hated, isolated and denounced around the world like never before, and is totally reliant on the support of one man (TRUMP) to avoid crushing international sanctions. Going to war in Gaza once again based on the same promise of "finishing Hamas," which this government failed to achieve after three long years, would have been suicidal unless Trump promised his full backing. And Trump, for good reasons, can't give such a commitment after his bitter experience with Netanyahu in Iran and Lebanon.   7. For me and my family, these are all very personal, not only political, questions. My six-year-old daughter will start school on the Gaza border in exactly one month, as we rebuild our life in the same home where Hamas tried to murder us on October 7. We've learned over the years to be highly skeptical of premature victory announcements and diplomatic celebrations. When these things collapse under the cynical realities of the conflict, most of those announcing them are not around to face the consequences. Still, I don't see a better alternative to the 20-Point Plan that Trump presented last year, at least not with Israel's current position of isolation and exhaustion under this government. So I have some hope that the agreement will succeed, even partially, and deliver a period of quiet. For us on the border, that would be significant after three years of war and trauma. And maybe in the long run, with different Israeli and Palestinian leadership, this will become a first step in a broader positive change for the region.
    • Until they're through the first round of votes there's no point believing any reports about who'll win.
    • David Byrne’s obviously got a few hits to play, but he’s not cheesy enough for the Legend Slot. Other headliner perhaps?
    • Too good for the legends slot
    • We had a really good weekend this year. This was our 2nd year after giving it a go last year with 3 year old twins (we do Glasto but don't take the kids and have no plans to in the distant future!!).   Highlights of the weekend for me was Peter Hook & the Light, English Teacher, Flaming Lips, Adult DVD and Alex James (I get the karaoke thing but I still thought it was great). Missed loads of acts we wanted to see due to having two kids in tow but overall we left happy with what we managed to see across the weekend. Some great food vendors, good to see Steak Frites make an appearance this year, one of my faves from Glasto. Festival is really well run, toilets remained clean and stocked with loo roll all weekend, even on Sunday night/Monday morning. The walk from the cars is a ballache but it is what it is, arriving Thursday evening meant we were parked as far away as you could be.   My only gripe is that there seems to be a trend of parents letting their teenagers camp completely separately to them in family camping. We had a large group of 15-17 year olds near us who came home pissed up every evening at 3-4am being really loud and annoying! I get that it's a festival etc but I think it's taking the piss a bit letting your kids camp separately and disrupt everyone else.   All in all we had a really good time and are looking forward to next year.
