Tipi fields

What are peoples thoughts on the tipi field? Worth the money? Camped everytime but slowly moving to easier and more convenient ways of camping!  Or anyone got any better suggestions?

I've always harboured a thought or two about hiring a tipi. It'll never get off the ground though. I've only ever camped in the one same spot for about 20 Glastonbury's.

A grand for a tipi. Split between 6 if that's the idea then the cost is coming down but it's still a lot of money to camp at a festival you've already paid to camp at.

I'm with Yoghurt. Every year I consider hiring one, even though I go solo, and seeing if I can talk a few nice folk from around here to share. I'd probably share with three others, just for space. But, then it's a lot of money and I quite like privacy in my sleep space, so I talk myself out of it. I can see the attraction, though.

Apparently they sold out literally within seconds when they went on sale last year, so you'd have to be quick to get one. The main thing that puts me off is that although they are in a great onsite position, you have to park in one of the normal car parks and bring all of your stuff through site. No different to normal camping I know, but what's the perk other than having a tipi pre erected for you? You could stay in Worthy View and admittedly be a bit further away, but park within a few hundred metres.

I'm usually in a similar boat if I've managed to secure a ticket when they go on sale. The additional £300 odd, if you share with five others, for the pleasure of being in a separate area with composting toilets and a fire pit always puts me off as it still entails having to haul all your stuff from the car park (minus a tent). I then look at Worthy View and always end up camping in the standard camping areas anyway.

I hired a tipi last year (along with 4 friends) so it worked out at around £200 each, and given none of us owned tents anyway, we would still have had to fork out some cash (though admittedly not £200 each) for tents.

In hindsight, hiring a tipi is not a decision I regret at all, especially given the weather this year. I'm personally a bit of a wuss when it comes to camping, I hate not being able to stand up, hate my stuff getting wet against the sides, and the real claustrophobic camping at Glastonbury. Here are my thumbs ups and thumbs downs about the tipi experience:

:D you don't have to lug a tent across the site, nor put it up. This means you don't have to be in such a mad rush to get into the site, and you'll be saving your back the extra 3kg of luggage.

:D the feeling of security. Entrance to the tipi field is wristband only, and whilst you can't guarantee you won't have stuff pilfered, I did feel a bit safer and that meant one less thing to worry about.

:D the space!! You can actually sit outside of the tipi and have a drink and a chat with all your mates! Heaven!

:D proximity - you're within spitting distance of The Park and about a 5 minute walk to the railway track.

:D protection from the elements. This year was brutal, but being inside the tipi was cosy and completely dry (although our little doorway area got very very muddy).

:( the expense

:( the showers. Yes they're for the sole use of the tipi residents, but the queues every day were beyond belief (an hour's wait was not unusual). I stuck to wet wiping.

:( the toilets. They were the compostable ones, but by the Sunday, a huge river of shit and mud had separated them from the main walkway, and it was pretty treacherous. Not to mention about half of them were out of action. So around 5 in total by Sunday were functioning, for around 800 residents.

:( the noise. Sleeping next door to The Park and Arcadia was very difficult. I wore earplugs but still heard every bit of bass. But then that's the price you pay for sleeping close to the entertainment.

    • Definitely see this as being 'weak' on paper but could see a few bumps up from previous sets at Download (Don Broco, Neck Deep etc).
    • Very different in terms of time of game,  yet remember how excited I was before the first game in Euro 2016 having grown up not sure I would ever see wales in an international tournament. That day scraped a win against Slovakia and was just happy to see wales score and win at a tournament, little did I know we would finish in the top 4. Hope Scottish fans get the same experience.

    • I don't think I'm alone as a Scotland fan that there is no way that I could possibly fall asleep knowing we're about to play our first World Cup game in 28 years! Pure adrenaline is keeping me wide awake (and plenty of rum)!
