Yup. Trump got a lot of hope for himself from the brexit thing. When he started dropping that "brexit plus plus plus" thing was the point I started thinking he was definitely going to win, and that Farage would be by his side.

Trump doesn't have much time for unhelpful idiots who want to talk and not do, tho, so I'm not thinking they'll be best buddies for too long. It'll probably be the case that even Bannon won't be around for long.

I think Trump is very like Boris - happy to say anything at all to progress his career, but has no interest at all in doing the hard work and detail involved with the role.

They both only want the plaudits, and are so used to insults thrown their way the insults don't bother them in the least.

The place they differ, I suspect, is with the amount of contempt they have for their own supporters. Boris has contempt for everyone (that's Eton for you ), while I reckon that Trump 'wants to be loved' by his own.

So where it'll get 'interesting' with Trump is when his own supporters start to voice their dis-satisfaction with Trump not delivering on his promises - and the promises they'll be most keen to see him deliver will be the promise of jobs, not the racist stuff. 

Trump will probably try to hide behind his appointees - so expect some sackings of anyone he can turn the blame on - tho I doubt he's going to succeed with using others as his human shield, no matter how much he looks sad and says they've let him down.

I guess you must have been about 5 when Bush 2 was wasn't elected and became president? Otherwise you'd know that Trump is not so much extreme as just simply a republican, tho one who says it as well as does it.

I'd suggest it wasn't the best placed joke given your own line of argument.

Just as with your hugely exaggerated hyperbole, 'the left' showing itself as everything its condemning is part of what gave Trump his victory. It's why it's not listened to by a huge and growing number of people, it's own worst enemy.

To attempt to get things back to some sort of sanity....

Steve Bannon: "white nationalist".

What does 'white nationalist' mean today in America to most who might buy into it to some degree?
(yes, I know some people buy into it to the extreme degree, but they're a small minority. I'm not meaning those)

It's the type of guy who might post on a website something like "the white man is discriminated against more than anyone else today".  Anyone who's ever read any reader's comments is likely to have seen someone use that line.

The idea is a laughable crock of shit, of course, tho it does have a basis in the reality of the reduction of white man's privilege as discrimination against others has been lessened. If you think about it you can see where it comes from.

How that's addressed, even by someone who might be an out and out racist, is not by suppressing other races, it's done by throwing more crumbs towards the white guy.

Yep, I concede that the crumbs have to come from somewhere - someone - else, and that'll be not-the-white-guy.

So let's think of a real problem, and what might happen.

As it happened, I saw a piece on TV in the last 24 hours (I forget where) about a large and growing morphine/heroin problem in the US, which is mostly affecting white and middle class people. It's origin is via the huge over-subscribing of pills, apparently.

So we might see action towards helping those people, and perhaps the funding to do it will come from drugs projects concentrated in not-white areas.

Would that average guy who says "the white man is discriminated against" happily go along with the very deliberate subjugation of other races, people he's likely to share work or social space with? 

I very much doubt it, tho 'the left' are able to help push him that way,.unless they take their heads out of their arses and stop demonising just like Trump.

I do, like I said, I studied political philosophy, which covered both left and right, and more (as in, consumerism and democracy are not the only ways, but they are the only ways on offer, since we can't choose none of the above - which I suspect is what people are trying to do).

Note how the government is reacting to Brexit, by starting new departments.

So the Civil service is expanding again. Lucky we can suddenly afford it, presumably with the money we'll save from the EU.

So Trump has come out against the alt-right.

Not something I ever thought he'd do - it's him calling his voters morons - so Trump is a one term president.

But it's the clear statement his biggest critics were wanting, so perhaps they can now put their fantasies back in it's box and drop the hate as big as anything from the alt-right.

I'm sure Trump will be shit, just as i'm sure any republican president would be shit, but the other side has the right to win elections if it gets the votes its needs.
