Anyone in a tipi this year?

After finally giving up my Glastonbury virginity via a tipi last year, I lucked in with the guaranteed tipi/ticket offer due to all the luvvies complaining about the lack of power sockets and butler service. (I thought the facilities were fine to be honest... Although I did in fact prefer to pop across the track to the long drops rather than queue!)

I was totally hooked from about the first moment I walked through the gates anyway, so started planning to return in the car on the drive off site!

I'm flying over from the US and meeting up with a Canadian contingent for the week. I'm a Brit (Nottingham-ish) but been working in various parts of North America for a few years now!

Anyway, onto the point of the thread... Is anyone off here in the tipi field this year? And any appetite for a drink (or 10) round the campfire?

Also as I say, I was in a tipi last year too, so happy to answer any questions...

Cheers,

J

Unfortunately I can't help on the tipi front as I'll be camped elsewhere. Just wanted to say enjoy your camp fire. I can picture the scene now - a lovely fire next to the tipi's will decent company, drink, and maybe a few other bits and bobs. It's nearly here folks. Safe journey to you J on your way over (and back).

  • 2 weeks later...

I got an email from them earlier this week...

The key info is that the lead booker needs to have their name, booking number and ticket stub (for photo check) to check in. The reception is only open between 9am and midnight (so no point trying trying to be one of the super early, first through the gate peeps!)

Additional tipi dwellers need to know their bookers name and booking number to check in and get a wristband (max 6 total per tipi).

This is about the same as last year, and seemed to work well. We had one guy arrive separately on Thursday, and he had no problems giving my name (lead booker) and being given directions to which tipi was ours to dump his stuff in - before then taking about 5 hours to find us bimbling round the site somewhere!

New things for this year are a tea tent/Cafe inside the tipi field for our early morning wake up needs, and of course the composting toilets which should be a major benefit over last year!

They look glorious. How much are they, and how many people do you think it's realistic to fit in them? I'm fairly sure they're too much $$$ for me, but if I come into a dollop of money one of these years I'd love a bash at it

No fires, but they are a very generous/spacious fit for 6.

We had 6 guys easily in there last year, all with single inflatable mattresses and with bags etc, and still had a 2 foot wide path up the centre to get to the back.

They're 950 quid, so really not cheap. But split by 6 it wasn't a bad deal for people coming in from overseas (don't want to have hassle with tent etc)... And once we figure in how much we've spent on flights, it's not even the worst cost for us!

Just means it's really my 1 big holiday for the year.

Just called them, and they thought they'd sent me an email, so they're sending another one.

The woman sounded so chilled.... (in a good way!)

If you've got your booking email you'll be grand, but you don't want to arrive at the fest and be met with a sea blank faces on the reception so it's worth just making sure they have you on their list of bookers.

Our friends arrived before me last year and were able to check in and I was the lead booker.

We are not in them this year though as it was a one off treat last year.

Was there a camp fire last year - I never saw one if there was.

Main advantage is that the tipi's stay nice and cool so you will be able to sleep past 8am when the glorious sun turns everyone elses tents (including mine) into an instant sauna.

Off topic (sorry) but why is dressing up in "Native American " garb in any way racist?

If I dress up as an Astronaut I'm not being anti-spaceman. If anything it is an homage. Shirley? In this (as I judge it) intention is everything, those dressing up in the headsets (and for some reason they were popular) certainly did not intend insult.

Outkast came in for a bit of stick for this, I seem to remember

can't imagine what they were thinking. Maybe it was a diversion from a pretty awful performance

and I love Hey Ya

As mentioned, it's similar to 'blacking up'...effecting a racial stereotype for your own amusement or amusement of others, which may be offensive to those being stereotyped or those with sensibilities around racial stereotyping.

It's a good idea to understand and respect the traditions of other cultures before imitating them for fun, not only to avoid offence, but to avoid people thinking badly of you.

That said, I would much prefer to live in a world where people weren't offended by others imitating their cultural or racial differences. i.e. blacking up is only offensive because racism exists. If we all got along just fine then wearing each others colours, clothes, cultural symbols etc could be as innocent as a child's dressing up party.

    • If you didn't see melt banana at Apolo. Go see them at the festival. Insane.
    • Interesting, and thanks for coming back to give an update! I've seen that the second stage looks bigger than usual too, looks to be a Serious Stages - Stellar Stage from distance photos.    Seems like sizing wise stages have been scaled up somewhat this year.
    • I see its cancelled now but they did leave it really late to announce plus they are up against Kelburn Garden Party Festival not to far from the festival site.
