Metallica 2014

I thought Arctic Monkeys would be all for that rock and roll eh?

They are. He actually says "I know we'd buzz off it" but essentially he's not sure how Metallica will go down with the Glastonbury crowd. Basically what was said in the first 100 pages of this thread before they were actually confirmed.

Well I sort of agree with what Turner and Marr and the like are saying that it's a strange one for Glastonbury as a year ago anyone would have said that and the big thing about the performance is proving doubters wrong. Bombay Bicycle Club bashing it saying they wanted Prince and Kanye instead and the lineup's disappointing is shit though. Fuck those guys.

Marr's dismissive laugh was priceless. He's too cute to get dragged into it - but he clearly finds it amusing that theyve even been booked.

Shit bands slagging off glastonbury. They have some nerve.

I cant help but like kasabian when I read their interviews. They are living the dream. Fair play to them I reckon.

Can anyone link something to help me hate them (apart from one of their songs). Ta.

Its tough to genuinely dislike them. Theyre such inoffensive gobshites. Didnt Meighan come out with "Holograms arent real, man..." this week? :D

They're the greatest over-achievers in recent musical history IMO.

heh that's a fair summary. I just get the impression they just love what they are doing and couldnt give a fuck what people think of them. They know they arent the next beatles or whatever.

Compared to a band like the arctic monkeys, with that po-faced tit of a front man, I'd take kasabian all day long.

I think people will be surprised, there will be enough people interested in Metallica for it to be good if they 'do their thing', I'm sure of it. I imagine the crowd is more likely to embrace them than abandon them to be honest.

Same here.

Whenever you see them in an interview, they always seem very humble and always seem to come across as being very hands on from writing to the production of the finished album.

So you watch a Brit Award speech which is a laughing stock and you think Alex Turner isn't humble?

Watch the Mercury speech he made when he didn't win. Or the 10,000 other interviews he's done where he's extremely humble and thankful for the interviewers comments.

the arctic monkeys frontman is the biggest helmet in world music.

Every single thing about him roars "whopper". He has no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

I'm sure he was sound in 2007 or whenever they started, but fame has moulded him into a thoroughbred ballbag.

He came across as being a cock at The Brit's.

I do think his "rock and roll" personality has been pushed on him by his label though. Probably after getting reviews that they lacked energy live.

Anymore thoughts on what they will open with?

Master of Puppets is the most requested song on the "By Request" shows, maybe they will open with that or Creeping Death?

I think it will be one of those two. They will want to start with a bang and they often start with creeping death. But they have also played MoP first a couple of times this year (for the first time ever I think? Someone coul correct me on that) as well and I have a sneaking feeling it could well be that. Everyone would go mental!

yeah it was used as the opener for the first time ever at recent show. i reckon they'll do the same at Glastonbury - grab everybody's attention from the get-go

Good on ye Mick!

Funny how the Stones arent afraid of festivals anymore after their success last year.

They are doing loads of EU ones this year! I knew glastonbury would change them!

They obviously must be accepting lower fees too if some festivals like Pinkpop can pull out lineups like that with the stones as well!

I still want, and think it will be, Battery.

*Uses POWER OF POSITIVE THINKING*

yeah i'd be surprised if it was anything other than Master Of Puppets or Battery. Battery straight into Master Of Puppets (which they've been doing often lately) would be just as brilliant

I'd honestly be surprised if it was MoP. I think they've opened with it so rarely for a reason. Creeping Death or For Whom the Bell Tolls are both much more likely IMO.

but with them being well aware of the Glastonbury crowd not being their usual audience i think they'd want to open with a real bang - something to make the audience think 'oh wow', and opening with Master Of Puppets would definitely do that (a bit like the Stones opening all their own shows up with Get Off Of My Cloud but opening Glasto up with Jumpin' Jack Flash - grab the unexpecting audience by the balls from the get go)

opening with Creeping Death (a song that has a part largely consisting of the chant 'DIE DIE DIE DIE') may not be the best way to go haha
