The Pyramid headline slot should be open to any band big enough to do it, which Metallica are.

There's all sorts of things you could be doing if you don't want to see it. It'd be the same if I was there for The Rolling Stones. Would I want to see that? Would I f**k. But would I complain? No. I'd just go and do something else. It's not like your options are badly limited.

So, its the "job" of the organisers to make the right bookings for the appropriate stages/time slots in keeping with the festival ethos and based on their experience plus current musical demand...reluctant to use tge word taste. Are they always going to get that exactly right? I guess not ..and you cant predict how everything will turn out. At least it keeps things interesting

yeah i think they do a great job of that, and to be fair to them, they did it this year it seems but got dropped in it when fleetwood mac couldn't and prince wouldn't.

metallica would be fine on the other stage, but the pyramid saturday slot is a step too far...

I personally think Glasto have done pretty well with their headliners this year, especially given that they didn't manage to get what they were wanting for the most part.

The lineup on the whole is pretty damn good.

I dislike all three! I shall be tootling about other areas/stages I think. I might watch Metallica as my crew all want to go and it'll be a good "all together" moment!

they are big enough to headline more metal-oriented festivals, but i don't think they'll be a huge draw at Glastonbury - other than people turning up out of curiosity then buggering off out of boredom.

yes, the situation is exacerbated by mediocre bookings for Fri/Sun also.

the lineup is otherwise great though, a huge selection of fantastic music on offer.

no the crux of my argument is that metal is shit, you know - intrinsically shit. that's why they don't have it at glastonbury....it's a festival that has good taste in music. you wander the site and hear good sounds day and night, not shit metal.

i should rephrase that - there will be plenty of people who love them going along, but it won't be a huge crowd.

it may be initially a good size made up of people turning up out of curiosity, but I predict this will dwindle when those people get bored.

Alongside Arcade Fire and Kasabian Metallica seem to be filling the legends/edgy booking at the same time. As discussed already they are pretty marmite and If you aren't a big fan of Metallica then I can see how it'd be disappointing.

If Metallica had either a Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, David Bowie on the booking then I'd say it was an inspired choice. As it is I'm not so sure.

There aren't bad genres, just bad songs... and even then, that's subjective. I don't think you can call all metal "intrinsically shit". Some of the most popular bands in the world came from the Heavy Metal world. Oh, and if you think something being popular makes it shit, despite being probably the only benchmark we have of how 'good' something is (by common consensus), you're a bellend. Intrinsically.

Booking Metallica is TOTALLY in keeping with the festival ethos. It's the most diverse festival on the planet - if Jay-Z and Beyonce can headline (both bookings that were also in keeping with the festival ethos), so can Metallica. Whether it works or not is a different matter, but their booking makes sense.

Aye, I think it needs to be noted that much of the moaning here is basically being done because someone doesn't like metal and has been completely clouded because of that.

While I did have a good laugh at the metal snobbery earlier, Metallica have a foot firmly planted in stadium rock, and have a huge crossover audience with people who aren't necessarily metal fans.

just look back at past headliners - generally huge acts 'of the moment' or legends with wide appeal.

metallica are big/legends in their genre, but the genre is too niche imo
