I don't really get the Beatles. I mean, I get why they were so big, what they achieved and so on, but I can't get in to them.

I caused a massive argument on another glastonbury group when I said I don't like the Beatles. At the time I was asking for some Rolling Stones recommendations as I'm 21 and their music isn't something my parents like so I haven't really heard much of their stuff knowingly. It sparked up a "How can you NOT know the Rolling Stones" debate, which I stupidly decided to throw in that I don't get the Beatles either. My god, I've never seen such mayhem online!

The Beatles aren't the be all and end all that people like to think they are, they made some great music, they're fascinating to read about and were very culturally important. But they're not for everybody, their importance is wildly over exaggerated, they made some shit songs as well as the great ones, John Lennon was a massive dick, it's OK not to like them, I don't own any albums or have a single song in my iTunes library, it doesn't make me a bad person, I have over ten thousand brilliant songs on their I can be getting on with. People who try to dispassionately state that The Beatles were the best band ever piss me right off, if you genuinely think that one artist can actually be the single best then you've failed as a music fan, you have a fundamental lack of understanding of the medium and you should fuck off and watch sports, and a lot of people who state The Beatles as their favourite band have no personality.

I put them on my IPod, then found that every time a track came on I skipped it. A few exceptions which are ok, Eleanor Rigby, Day in the Life, but I always skip Hey Bloody Jude....

I remember reading Ian McDonald's explanation of the end of "Long Long Long" (bottle resonates on top of speaker, band responds and turns it into death-howl, bottle falls off and smashes, drum snare evokes head falling into basket from guillotine) and having to put down the book. It was far too much.

Not liking The Beatles to me is the equiv of not enjoying a glass of cold water when youre thirsty or a hug from your Mum when youve had a crappy day.

It is amongst the most profound transgressions I can imagine.
