Efestivals spammers

There seems to be an increasing number of new members who are posting spam messages on the forum. Threads offering such things as fitted kitchens or illegal movie downloads really have no place on here, but we still seem to keep getting them. Before long I am fairly certain there will be spam threads offering Russian girlfriends, Viagra, or even of a more sinister nature. Does anyone else think it might be a good idea to restrict new members ability to start new threads until they have contributed a certain number of posts to existing threads or been approved by the mods to do so? It might not be possible but I am sure if Neil or Scotty can change things a bit it would stop the spammers that could eventually flood the forum.

They've always been here, Neil normally keeps on top of them, but it is the summer, people have real lives, particularly on weekends during festival season, so...

The best thing to do is ignore such threads and let them drop off the page, someone will clean them up when time allows :)

There's not more spam these days, just more persistent spammers

What these spammers need to appreciate is that we are not a bunch of retards, we don't appreciate anyone who is trying to attract such free advertising on Neil's website and so will go out of our way to avoid such shit companies. Any company who tries to promote themselves by pitting up a thread selling their wares is clearly a shit company who fails to understand their customer, or potential customers.

I will, like most on the forums, avoid such companies, and encourage everybody else to do so

In all seriousness though spam can and does ruin forums. I have seen it on the old yahoo groups where such innocuous list as the Charlie Chaplin group was swamped by spam, much of it quite offesive, to such an extent that nobody posts about the subject anymore. As suggested earlier in the thread it might be the right time to nip this in the bud before it becomes a major problem, by if possible restricting new members to only posting on active threads until they have reached a certain number of posts to allow them to start new threads. Also the IPS spam service sounds interesting, although I fear persistent spammers probably know how to get around it.
