some hilarious views on this thread, mainly from.

A. people who don't like dance music

B. people who wish to be left alone to head bob to reggae whilst smoking weed, as all those other nasty drug takers are kept away from them.

my view on silver hayes (and as a first time glasto visitor, but as someone who goes to loads of dance events (big & small)..was i thought in general the area worked well bar for a few points:

Wow Tent was far too small, (deep house, is the sound the kids are all into these days, so for a lot of the djs, the place was going to be mobbed, especially for the thursday night (sure the weather meant more people perhaps trying to get undercover, but should've been using Sonic, or my preference have a much bigger WOW tent. (we were at parklife in manchester at start of the month...those size tents was what was needed)..the igloo tent next to wow was a a waste of time (and i think hardly anyone was in it (perhaps knew what it was?..we went in, was about 7 people there , good size space inside, and i liked the way the visuals were being displayed on the wall..+ .was about the only place playing techno i was in the entire 5 days as well)

think WOW did work well as the day 'boat' party thing though.

the sound levels at the bar between sonic & WOW was far too loud at night, drowning out the music coming from wow tent, so more people pushed to get into it (on the thursday)

Sonic...interesting design..worked ok during the day when not so busy (enjoyed some great sets from TEED, gold panda, sbtrkt, i missed bashmore but i heard he was one of the best things on there).but really a massive tent would've been better in terms of crowd/atmosphere/sound levels

no need for 2 reggae areas.

blues (i thought suited visionquest rather well on the thursday night, and certainly could've been used better..Sunday night for example, house or techno should've been on with both Wow & Sonic being taking over with drum n bass / dubstep / bass

More techno in silver hayes...carl craig had a great crowd, so people obviously wanted to hear it.

what happened to maya jane coles?...im not complaining as troxler is far better anyway...(great set from him...his set at genosys was fantastic as well)

were all 4 of Visionquest actually there?...was only ever 3 of them from what i saw?

or alternatively, you're too familiar with the poor standards of other fests and not familiar enough with Glasto to know how nice it *should* be if it lived up the standards of the rest of Glastonbury.

It's absolutely fuck all to do with the two points you raise, and everything to do with that area being much shitter than it needed to be, for a number of practical reasons (which have already been detailed).

A redesign of the field sounded like a good idea to me, but I think it was a mixed bag. Likes others I liked the decor at The Blues (especially as I wasn't among those hassled for smoking). But I couldn't get to grips with Sonic at all - give me a big old fashioned tent where I know where I can get the best sound & visuals!

I was probably in the area much less than any recent Glastonbury. In fact the best two dance acts I saw were at Spirit of 71 (Simian Mobile Disco) and Genosys (Bicep).

it was my first time at glastonbury as i said, so strangely enough im not overly familiar with it.....

but you go back through this thread and there does seem to be a level of resentment that there is even a dance area there & an attitude about the people going too it

but anyway, stage layout, sound levels, the programming of the stages i will keep to that, save turning the thread into a debate about dance areas within larger music festivals.

any resentment of that area is, I'd say, much MUCH more based in that area having long been the most scuzzy area of the site than anything to do with the music it plays.

It's because it's such a scuzzy area that people want to see it change. If changing requires that the music changes too, for many people that's not much of an issue, but that's a different part of things. I'm sure most people would be quite happy for it to be a dance area if it was a pleasant area.

I loved The Blues and The Gully and thought the area had generally improved (remarkably, the loos were almost the nicest on site consistently) but It does still feel like the whole thing doesn't quite work. I reckon it would be better if the different stages were spread across the site rather than grouped. Lots of people that like JPT's standard kind of fodder like the stuff that gets booked for The Park but this doesn't mean they have to be next door to each other.

That said, it could only have been a disappointment for people who'd never been or who had an unrealistic expectation of the improvements that could be made.

The Scooby Snack burger came from Silver Hayes, of course. This is a big plus.

Only visited SH once in 2013 because I felt I "had to" - shouldn't have bothered. Thought the Blues looked and sounded great, everyone seemed to be having a good time which seemed incongruous to the rest of the area. I know "grouping" of areas is bad, but why not put arcadia down here? - it is a dance area after all. The Blues could be put in the SE corner and swap Glasto Latino with the Beat Hotel.

In fact, if I hadn't gone to the John Peel tent once I probably would never have strayed over there at all. 2011 we camped in Bushy ground, so had to trudge through the dance area every day, I think the mud stopped as much twattishness but it was still bad then.

We ventured down once and the Sonic Stage sound was shocking and clashed (not techy minded!) with the bass of something to the right of it so you literally couldn't hear anything- we were at the back of the tent for Rudimental and left as we only knew what was happening from the crowd. We didn't find the area of the site to be 'nice' and some of the clientelle unwelcoming too so we didn't go back.

Didnt really spend much time at SH, Im a dance music fan but none of the acts there really interested me, more into the obscure and twisted sounds in the SE Corner and I knew the crowds would be shit for the more mainstream dance DJs so didnt bother. But I did go to the Gully and the Blues, the Heatwave were incredible, the vibes and sound spot on!

I was also in the crush previously mentioned between the other and SH, it was really dangerous, was struggling to stay standing at points and let myself get carried pretty much. Managed to get through and alerted a group of police on the other side but not sure what they actually did. I think I saw they opened a few more fences on one side to make it a bit wider for the rest of the weekend.

Yeah it was Friday, but I went to the Blues about 20:45, and you mustve come from Bastille around 19:45... thats a worryingly long amount of time that the crush lasted without being sorted out...

The bit that always weirds me out with almost all the dance village/silver Hayes incarnations is the big empty space in the middle. It's almost always felt like they had bigger plans that failed and you're left with nothing to do but get off your face and dance

Cubehenge went a way to fix this, something like that with a more ambient chill out vibe and seating in tiers could help balance out the area otherwise it's always been a bit of a on-a-mission place.

Fewer dance tents is a good thing I think, capable of holding bigger crowds and encouraging the more niche varieties out into the rest of the festival stopping that area becoming the stimulant paradise/hellhole it is

Could oxlyers be scaled back to allow larger path / access area between the silver Hayes & others stage ?

Would make camping in oxlyers better as well I'd have thought. As having now seen the layout for myself , seems far too close to the other stage/pathway & being flanked with those the 2 large set of toilets, the smell & noise must be terrible.

(As a general thing couldn't really fathom how close people were camping to busy walkways & the toilets....not enough drugs to make camping next to the toilets alright. can only be excitable kids who would put up with that or people with no sense of smell!:-)

We tried to get into pussy parlour for London Grammar but q was too big.

I did spend a bit of time in the venue on the Sunday night, loved the decor inside (surprised how big a venue it was once inside) a soul band called Deep Street Soul were on. I thought they were fantastic , really great soul diva frontwoman & great musicianship , they were on at the rabbit hole early on Monday morning as well.
