Muse were being very heavily rumoured to headline Download a few years back, at least in some East Midlands circles. Friend of mine bought early bird tickets on the strength of these rumours - and was majorly disappointed when it didn't happen! I can't personally see them ever playing Download - at least, not these days ....

Muse, Foo's, Green day, Pearl Jam, RHCP are all bands Copping could book without causing to much of a stir that have never headlined before. Add to that bumping up bands and of course the old merry-go round of standard DL headliners and I think they'll do alright.
To me its always the undercard that is the disappointment to me at DL

The reason bands like Muse, Foo's, Green Day and RHCP haven't done Download is because they're too big. Some years they do their own stadium shows, and if they do a festival then R/L or V will be waiting ready to offer more money. The simple fact both those festivals are two sites means that Download is out priced - they can't ever offer a band the chance to make more money for just one show and still make it financially viable for themselves. Throw in the added media exposure of R/L, V, more tv coverage, bigger crowd etc and its a no brainer.

It might happen one year by some fluke but really DL just doesn't have the appeal to book a band like that.

    • People seem to have got obsessed about 'secret sets' at all festivals this year even when there aren't any spaces other than, in EOTR's case, the usual late Folly sets that 90%+ of the time are from artists who are already playing.
    • To be fair @Superscally barely mentions the running thing. Very quiet about it 😘
    • I guess we'll just have to wait until videos of the shows go up, but the fact that the standing is also greyed out still suggests to me that those sections just sold out out before the others and a blue block just be like 3 tickets left, it's still not concrete proof they never went on sale and if they were never on sale why would they not make it even, if 414 wasn't on sale then you'd think 409 wouldn't be either
    • Selfish, but I've done the 2 days I'm there.. i'll try to do the rest through the day but might get beaten to it as it's editable....    https://clashfinder.com/s/ape2026/
    • I don’t think the festival automatically ‘need’ to have a female headliner if you have strong female headliners on the Other Stage (which I reckon will be Rosalia and Phoebe Bridgers), perhaps a female legend (praying for Annie, will take Cher), and a few female/mix gendered subs on the Pyramid (maybe London Grammar, The xx). From what I’ve seen of Sabrina, her team prioritises the pay day and I think she will be doing Wembley over Glasto weekend.   One thing I’ve noticed is a lot of the suggestions would be first time headliners and I can’t work out when the last time was that the festival had three artists top the bill that hadn’t topped it before? It seems to be something they like to do to make sure they have a ‘safe’ headliner that will land well with the masses. Plenty of names in that hat that could step back up next summer and should/could be about: Billie Eilish, Adele, Foo Fighters, The Cure, Radiohead, U2…hell, if Beyoncé is really planning to release a ‘rock n roll’ album to complete her Renaissance trilogy, Glastonbury would be a great place to ‘kick off’ that campaign for her.   And there’s always the Rihanna rumour. Her husband (I think) said this week she’s in the studio.
