What makes one field better than another for camping?

My one and only visit to Glastonbury was in 2008. We set off from Stockport on the Thursday morning around 4am and arrived mid morning and it was rammed so we just walked with the masses and found anywhere we could to pitch.

Just took a look at the 2008 site map and it looks like we ended up in Daisy Ground next to The Park and although it was a bit of a trek it was great. However, I am comparing this with nothing and this year I want to do a bit more forward planning.

  1. Where would you choose to camp?
  2. What makes it better than anywhere else?

Okay so this advice/experience is almost 7 years old now because we now use a caravan but:

We used to camp near the cinema which was always really friendly, good atmosphere for us young teens and we made lots of friends.

Then we moved to homeground for a couple of years, this was OK for space and location but we never felt we could party/drink loudly by the tents (one year we actually had a complaint for being too loud...eugh.)

Then the penultimate year of camping we moved to the bottom of big ground. NEVER AGAIN, we got robbed, our neighbours tried to get in our tents (at the time we were a group of girls with the guys camping in a different field) and was just dirty, the facilities were terrible and it just wasn't comfortable.

The final year of camping we joined a group of old timers at pennard hill (and then moved to south park i think on the last night..) and this had a great atmosphere, everyone made friends with the camping neighbours and we all felt very safe.

Like I said this was quite a few years ago now and I've heard lots of different advice in recent years. I think a lot of it is common sense, if you like dance music, be near the dance area etc etc.

I've also never heard of anyone enjoying staying in the field opposite the other stage, in fact I know of a group that left early (and luckily my mum let them have the house) because they hated camping there so much.

Camped in kidney mead first couple of years (08 & 09)good position for pyramid, west holts and the late night corner, plus good for the market for coffee and breakfast in the morning. Last 2 times we haven't been able to get a space (got on there at 5pm in 08, 3pm 09, too full at midday 10 & 11) and have ended up at the bottom of park home. Its not ideal, a bit far from facilities and only really any good for the the other, but i just can't be arsed with carting all my gear round the festival, so may just head straight there this year.

The first year I went I camped in Big Ground which took me over 2 hours one way from the west car parks, the following year we moved to Pennard but that filled too quickly for the full group to camp together in. The last three years we've been in Park Home but that has become too busy so we'll probably move out to Diary this year and be nearer friends in camper vans as well.

When we camped it was, from preference, the top end of Big Ground. Good views, not far from clean flush toilets, the Police Station, ATMs and a 24 hour cafe. Also well drained and little risk of flooding.

I camped in Bottom Webbs Ash last year purely because it was the first spot I saw and I was knackered.

I ended up loving it. I was concerned about flooding but it was fine. Close to Pyramid, John Peel, Other, long drops, lock-ups, cafe... All in all, I'll be back if I can convince mates to park themselves there.

Pennards is too full these days, especially as they've given a large chunk of it away for crew camping. Park Home and Dairy are both reasonably good fields as not too far from the exit for the late night areas.

In 2011 Park Home was pretty full by mid-afternoon, and in 2010 I couldn't easily find even space for my small tent by 6pm. Dairy normally has space until Wednesday evening, however the trend over the last few years is for more and more people to arrive as early as possible..
