i'm getting a tattoo on my arm, but as I've quit being a waster a year ago and started going to the gym, swimming and running every week I thought I should probably wait till I've evened out into whatever body size I end up as :P

getting a small skull and crossbones on my wrist and I've met some lovely artists as well as some right douchebags in the last week

Does anyone here tip their artist? I've been seeing more and more that people leave tips, whether it's cash or a bottle of booze or something. I've never tipped, never thought to really. I almost feel guilty for not tipping now!

That's a very cool image :)

I don't understand why the artists you've spoken to will only draw it up after they've taken the deposit... Any legit artist I've spoken to doesn't operate like that. Some however charge for drawing it up and then take that off of the price of the tattoo but that doesn't seem quite right either, not to me anyway.

Do your research Nightcrawler and find the right artist for the job :) Where are you btw? Would you be willing to travel? Maybe there's an artist coming to a convention near you that you could talk to over email and maybe get booked in with? All things to look into :)

Thanks :) Yea, the girl who did the one on my leg didn't ask for a deposit, just told me to come back a week later to see if I liked it, I did, I paid a deposit then and there and had it done a couple days later. I'll have a look at tattoo conventions like you mention, I definitely want it to be done by an artist as opposed to some grumpy guy with a tattoo gun.

Well you are the first person to think such things out of tatt'd people I've spoken to, why would I pay a deposit for something I haven't seen?

I've no issue with paying a deposit :) I've just never been asked to pay the deposit before knowing what the tattoo will be.

I've always been told to return in a week or so to see what the design is like and see if I want any changes to it. If I like that's when I get booked in and pay my deposit - this is just my experience though, I completely understand that everyone operates differently :)

I've always paid the deposit first and it's understandable, if I was the tattoo artist I wouldn't want to start work on something for free with no guarantees, unless it's a very small/basic design I guess.

  • 4 weeks later...

I honestly had booked in at Prix in Pasadena,

"Watching the mountains through the fog

Watching a film with a talking dog"

I'm glad I overslept with jet lagged, I hadn't even chosen a font.

Went there on my next trip to apologise, I was still tempted.

I just have piercings, these days I have my conch, rook, 2 normal lobes and one 8mm stretched lobe all in my ears (in case you were wondering..) and my nose. Used to have my belly button pierced but it kept falling out and after a very traumatic time repiercing it at Leeds I decided to call it a day. Got a horrible hole there now though :(

  1. pierced ears and belly button and one tattoo that I love and it means a lot to me. Want a few more tats - 'Believe' on the inside of my wrist will be next I think and then something significant around my ribcage - just been thinking for about 5 years what that will be and cannot come to a conclusion!

It is. A colleague recently had what appears to be 3 splodges about 8-16mm across on her hand in the same location, which she clearly has not been looking after in any way which are starting to look like a skin condition, frankly. She told me she has now 'got the bug' and wants more but I'm too polite to ask what exactly they are supposed to be.

A star should be the easiest thing in the world to draw, btw, there is absolutely no excuse for drawing one freehand like that when it is a geometric shape than can be rendered perfectly using simple maths.

    • Proper special gig tonight. They won't mean much to most people, but The Dogs D'Amour were one of the most significant bands of my youth.   Tyla, yer main man of said band, was playing in Birkenhead tonight. Not many there, but it was going fine. Then he decided he didn't like the smoke and the flashing lights so suggested moving the gig to the beer garden. Off we all went, and it was magical. Like having your favourite musician play in your garden. I absolutely loved it.   Before:     After:
