Ever since people got the idea of plugging guitars into the mains folk have started to say "well it isn't pure or proper music is it?" the thing is what is pure or proper music and what is and is not acceptable in a live performance? You could say effects pedals that add reverb are producing sounds that are no longer being played so they are unacceptable? In my view as long as things are done with innovative skill and a degree of talent, it is worthy of consideration. If we start to get too snobby about it, should we start to consider nothing pure and worthwhile unless it is produced by such means as someone banging on a hollowed out tree trunk with a bone?

I understand you

so if you went to what you were hoping would be a live show, and everything was pre-recoreded, you'd be fine with that?

It's nothing to do with being snobby, it's about not getting what you thought you'd paid for

A bit like the horsemeat scenario. There's nothing wrong with the meat, but it's not what you wanted.

I understand you .

I could understand it if everything had been pre-recorded, but it hadn't. We obviously disagree about the extent of the miming, I didn't notice it but expected there may be a few small parts of it that were, where as you say you did notice and in you view it was a large amount of it. But (and truely no disrespect intended) I am not sure you get the Floyd, they always have used tapes and have had pre-recorded tracks to play too, in fact they were one of the most innovative pioneers in this field. Take Echoes on Meddle for example the vocals are double tracked and live even David Gilmour wouldn't have been able to sing two vocals at the same time and they also were experimenting with tapes back when Sid Barrett was with them. Also as mentioned earlier I was fortunate enough to hear the warm up sound test and they were playing the orchestrated backing track to Comfortably Numb, as it was there was no orchestra at the gig so it had to be a pre recorded track, would I have preferred it without the orchestra well the answer is definitely no, as I believe it would have sounded quite thin if it had been absent.

I also believe that with such talented musicians as Dave Kilminster, Snowy White and John Carin they wouldn't have wanted to be involved if it had been mainly a miming session.

Not sure what you did expect but in my opinion this was far from being like a Girls Aloud concert, good to look at but mimed because if it wasn't it would have been even more terrible to listen to.

you were suggesting that punters shouldn't be bothered about pre-recorded bits with miming. I just wondered where you would draw the line.

I think I 'get' Pink Floyd. I've been going to see them since Saucerful Of Secrets was released and toured.

And double tracked vocals is hardly cutting edge.

I would happily pay again knowing lots of it was mimed - it's still all redone and incredibly so. The show was still amazing and if for the few close enough some of the illusion was ruined then it's a shame but I reckon it was better from further back anyway

nice shots Paul - I take it you were able to move from a stand { at the side } to the front - which appears to be seating not standing.

So was there no iwhatsits screens to spoil the view ?

did you meet Jay Mcleary when he was with Specialized Security many moons ago ? as he is a good mate of mine,

I didn't know any of it was mimed before I went to the Wembley show and I didn't notice when I was there, frankly it was the single best live experience of my entire life and probably always will be. I couldn't care less if parts were not real or were pre-recorded. It was fucking amazing!

Edit: Has it been proven he was lip syncing or just some blokes hunch?

The debate isnt whether or not he lip-synched - he did. He didnt just lip-synch in Dublin last week, he's been doing it for years. On tracks from "In The Flesh?" right at the start to "Don't Leave Me Now", "Comfortably Numb", "Waiting for the Worms" and a frankly embarrassingly obvious "The Trial". Zero debate, he did it.

The debate has moved on to whether this is acceptable. Clearly for some on here this is perfectly fine, The Wall is a primarily a show not unlike something from the West End or Vegas. I can accept this from a certain point of view.

However lip synching for me in this instance is a snide and cheap move from someone who should know better. Roger was fundamentally "behind a wall" himself in miming to a backing track. Emotional honesty and "heft" of the meaning devalued for me as a result.

Fascinating stuff this. Really interesting. People defending lip syncing when they wouldn't accept it from somebody they consider lightweight, pop or whatever. I'm looking forward to when the line-up is announced and the annual 'they don't even play their own instruments' comments about some bookings. I think this thread will come into it's own then. Genuinely revealing stuff coming out of this.

they dont lip synch or mime at west end shows though, so it's not even like that.

I cant think of any event where miming is accepted.

I wonder what I would have thought had I clocked on at the time. It's a tough one this. Is the meaning devalued because he mimed? I dont think so. He did write it all afterall, so it's not like birtney miming frivolous songs that were given to her, where the only connection she has with the songs is the vocals

that's the difference I think
