I love Metallica - which is precisely why I'm off to Download this summer. I also love Glastonbury - but not the two in the same field.

I cannot stand Lou Reed. Lulu was everything that is bad about a collaboration. I tried - I really did, but as deep as my love for Metallica is, this really was shocking. In some cases, stick to what you know works. Right, off to the Download pages. ;-) xxx

Metallica are too far out of the glasto comfort zone. While they have tried new things in the past like a hip hop headliner, it was Jay Zee whos pretty mainstream as far as hip hop goes.

So while people say how diverse Glasto is, I think they play it fairly safe when it comes to the headliners.

that's because unsuitable headliners for any fest = shit sales for that fest.

It's nothing to do with being out of their comfort zone, unless by "out of their comfort zone" you're meaning bankrupt? Would the metal fest that is Download book Steps to headline? Of course not. Would you say that would be out of their comfort zone, or would you just say that was stupid?

Glasto is a festival that has always had mainstream headliners. Why expect it to change what it does when no one would say the same about Download?

Glasto is the only festival that's doing new things to any extent. There's exciting acts and big acts of all genres all around the festival and which have not been seen at UK festivals before or which rarely play UK festivals.

Metallica headline UK festivals every year, surrounded by the same old acts every single time. Who won't move from their comfort zone?

In fairness to Metallica, they've said lots of times now they want to play Glasto so are totally willing to exit their comfort zone.

that's not what I was meaning.

I replied to a post that said Glasto won't leave it's comfort zone - so I was pointing out that Download doesn't so why should Glasto?

And thats not even mentioning Michaels reluctance.

Michael is reluctant to have the Foos as a headliner because he considers them too heavy for his fest, tho from what I've heard he's borderline about that for the Foos. So the more-heavy Metallica would defo be over that border.

But that aside, Glasto has *always* had pop headliners. The one exception I can think of was Archaos.

Download wouldn't change from having heavy headliners, so why should Glasto change form having pop headliners? Download would fail to sell its tickets if it didn't have heavy headliners, and much the same applies with Glasto*.

(* just because Glasto sells its tickets before bands are announced doesn't really change that. Glasto goers have no less of an expectation of what Glasto will deliver them as Download fans do of Download).

Foo fighters are one of the biggest bands on the planet right now. I asume its more of an 'artisic' rather than commercail reason for them not to play.

Metallica are one of the biggest metal bands on the planet, and so i think would be a commercial disaster for glastonbury. Who don't really need/want to cater to metal fans

I'm not entirely sure on that one. I know that Glasto have had regular convos with Foos going back a few years (if not more recently too), and I know that Michael has expressed the view that he's undecided as to whether they're a suitable headliner because they're heavier than anything he's had as headliner previously.

Whether the reason it's not happened is Glasto's choice or the Foos choice I don't know. But from where i'm sat it appears to be the case that in the years since I know they've talked that Foos have either not been available or they've chosen to take big and exclusive offers from other fests - which suggests to me that what the foos have chosen to do in the years since is chase the biggest pay-days.

Does that mean Biffy Clyro would be ruled out of headlining? they are about as heavy as Foo Fighthers.

I guess the same would apply with their heavyness.

But currently they'd be ruled out by their popularity. They'd be massively off the radar for many Glasto goers as things stand.

i they do it they've got to go all out Greatest Hits, Like a Propper headliner

Fuel, Master of puppets, Battery, enter sandman, One, Nothing else Matters, Sanitarium, Seek & Destory, And justice for all, Ride the Lightning Sad But True, fade to Black. The memory remains, Disappear (Give or take maby one or two of these)

Erm .... how many of them are actually 'hits', *real* hits rather than popular songs amongst metallers? ;)

They don't have the hits to do a hits set. They couldn't do a set that most people would recognise.

they are suited to the fest surely?

Suited to the fest, yes - just as Foos are (they've played before now).

Biffy are still a long way off being a headliner tho I'd say, as they're a lot less known in mainstream-world than the likes of Foos.

I'd guess that their style of music puts them alongside the foos as to whether or not that would rule them out of headlining once they have the mainstream profile to justify being headliner.

Not at all. Kanye produces everything himself, in fact you've probably heard more of the stuff he's produced than the stuff he's released. It's one of the thing that makes him unique, the fact that he's schooled himself in the music industry. He was a producer long before an artist and has worked with some of the biggest artists in the music industry.

His last record I'd definitely recommend you listen to. Metacritic averaged it at 95/100, it's been called one of the greatest hip-hop records of all time, as well as one of the greatest records of all time, it was generally viewed as a masterpiece wherever it was reviewed. Some of the reviewers talk about it being "picasso like" and "re-arranging form to suggest new ways of viewing things" "staggering, often breathtaking" "a milestone in hip-hop music" etc. etc.

I'd truely recommend you listen to most of Kanye's records as he constantly changes, and this latest record is one of the most genre pushing, boundary changing records in a long long time in any genre, but i'd also recommend his debut as well if you get the chance.

I'll give you that he's a massive bellend on occurance, but it's massively unfair to say he doesn't evolve, take risks or experiment when it's pretty much part of why he's respected so much.

I'll stop sounding like a shit advert/Kanye fanboy now haha, but i think it's important to note alongside his bellend-ness, he does make some very good, very important music.

Would he play Glasto then? He'd demand a headlining slot surely?

A year back (and longer) I'd have said he was nailed on as a near-future Glasto headliner.

But after his failure to shift tickets at Big Chill, along with his ridiculous rant, I'm now far from sure that he's an act they'd go for to headline.

As for him, I'd guess he'd demand headliner or nothing - but that's just a guess.

There isn't anything wrong with what he actually said though. Apart from the Hitler part I guess. He's well known for that kind of thing though, so his fans must half expect something like that to possibly happen if they go and see him, albeit not a rant that long.
