...also if you were a Depeche Mode fan (many of whom are a bit older) then why would you pay to go and see Depeche Mode at Reading surrounded by loads of drunk teenagers when you could go and watch them at the O2 Arena? And if you were booking Reading festival then why would you book Depeche Mode knowing this is the likely scenario?

The Cure where an exclusive at least.

I still cant understand why people dont think depeche mode are a huge band, especially by ticket sale, iconic band, back catalogue and a band who have fans of all ages. I suppose people would rather have music by numbers like foo fighters, killers etc etc.

I agree but wouldnt rule it out, ive not actully said there going to get booked. I would like them to play a uk fest as hate arenas, if thats your argument about indie clubs how many would know more than a couple black sabbath songs. Although I cant see the bookers going to indie clubs and going "wow friday im in love is playing, book em".

I can see theres not much love for dm on this forum, people have got to admit they could headline though surely?

I have no interest in them, probably because I despise Dave Gahan and that's always put me off trying to get into them. I don't consider them to be big enough (although it's clear that I'm getting heavily outnumbered and am probably wrong) and I agree with justiceforcedave about their wider appeal (or lack of). I would consider them to be nowhere near as successful at attracting people to the festival as The Cure.

Nope music is music, or do people only listen to music from there era? I was listening to the likes of dylan, joy division in my teens. Why wouldnt todays youth want to watch legends rather than the killers/vaccines/bloc party.

YOur argument would stand up if reading/leeds sold out but it didnt, it used to sell like glastonbury now it hasnt got a prayer. So there going wrong somewhere with there lineups and they cant bank on stadium selling bands next year either.

I've got no interest in Depeche Mode, I've seen Black Sabbath twice already, and The Killers are just shite.

How was that?

Seriously though, i don't think The Cure were the roaring success last year that would have FR rushing out to try and book another 80's band to headline, and i honestly don't know anyone (personally) who really listens to them or would be drawn to the festival by them.

In the end of the day no one knows what direction reading festival will take, especially after 2 years of slower ticket sales.

Is it trying to get an older audience, as its agreed its mostly aimed at the younger audience. With the cure, potentially black sabbath perhaps its trying to go in another direction.

If its still going to be aimed at 16-21 perhaps there will be more and more urban music coming into the festival as Far as my nieces and nephews go that what there listenting to. Is there the same interest in bands reading have booked in the last 5 years?

I know a couple of people have mentioned it recently but did Radiohead really have a small crowd? I was stood around the bar area and the whole area was fairly busy through their set, not as rammed as for the Foos but their certainly wasn't a gap of tens of metres between the people milling around the bar and the back of the crowd like there was for The Cure.
