benicassim - is it terrible?

I want to see stone roses next year. Fuji rocks is a non starter, T in the park is deeply unappealing.

What is benicassim like? I have read the horror stories about it being overrun by teenage drunk brits, so would a group of 35 year olds stand out like a gang of sore thumbs? Or are there a few older folk there too? I reckon a lot of older people will go there just for the roses.

any thoughts? I'd be getting a hotel/apartment naturally (anyone know any decent ones?)

I went about five years ago, and had a wonderful time. When I went it was a real mix of people from all over Europe, predominately Spanish obviously. It's an arena festival, though, with camping outside in three different locations. I was too hot to be in a tent after about eight am, so was running on empty all week-end. The coolest place to be during the day was in my head, but only if my head was on the beach under an umbrella. We also met a really cool bar-owner off the main strip in town who "looked" after us all week-end for all our needs. He actually invited us to the bar for a paella with his family one lunchtime which was very cool. It was commerical, with beer tokens, but that wasn't a problem at all, because there were plenty of staff on the bars at all time.

If it hasn't been over-run with a load of kids from the home counties going on their first holiday and causing excessive mischeif, I'd recommend it. However, I believe that is not the case now, and I think one of the big festival promoters and flogging it like a dead horse now too.

We first went about seven years ago and returned twice in the following 4 years. Had a fantastic time the first time when there was a real mix of nationalities. IMO It got progressively worse on the years that followed as more Brits came and it got more rowdy (though i also got older!).

The last time we went we got an appartment (too hot in the tents) a 45 minute walk from the site, towards town and the beach which was affordable and nice enough. We still enjoyed it but for the bands and sunshine rather than the general atmosphere. If you only like festivals such as glasto, bestival or anything smaller you probably won't like it. If (with a decent line-up) you'd consider a reading or wireless you probably will.

I went in 2003 I think , drove all the way from Yorkshire !!!

We camped , yes its hot in the tents , but we would stay up till 8.00 am then have a few beers then crash out , Met some great people and had a brilliant time.

Only issue is main stage is on a flat car park so atmos can be lacking !

I know this isn't what you were asking but TITP isn't actually that bad, I imagine it has nothing on Glasto but if your really wanting to see The Stone Roses (as am I) then it is not a bad festival at all. I know i'm biased but I have seen very little trouble at TITP and it is just up the road rather than going to Spain, just thought I would do my bit sticking up for it :P

I always thought the heat there would be unbearable? Glastonbury 2010-don't get me wrong I liked the sun being out but it was impossible to sit and watch bands with no shade

We went to Benicassim in 2006 - the last time Glasto had a year off. As my other half doesn't camp, we stayed at the Hotel Orange, which we were both very happy with - walkable to both the festival site and the beach, with air conditioned rooms and nice pools.

Maybe because it was a Glasto fallow year, nearly everyone there seemed to be British. Not that that was a problem - most people we encountered seemed pleasant enough.

The festival itself is okay, but the main stage is basically on flat tarmac, so it's quite hard to see if you're not that tall. It also gets quite pushy and shovey. There are a couple of other stages, but all in all it's a bit like V in a car park and with an inferior line up.

As has been said, the daytime temperature is unbearably hot - totally impossible to sleep in tents after 8am, and throughout the day every available piece of shade throughout the town was occupied by some poor soul trying to catch a nap. I think they moved the festival to mid-July the year I went - previously it had been a few weeks later so probably not quite as hot.

Transportation is a bit of a nightmare. There is a special bus to/from Valencia airport, but it's not particularly cheap, so you might consider hiring a car if there are a few of you. Taxis in Benicassim itself are pratically non-existent during the festival.

We went to Ibiza on the same trip (there are cheap flights between Ibiza and Valencia) and we enjoyed the Ibiza part much more.

I went to Benicassim this year with a few mates. We're all 30-32. 3 of us decided it to camp and it wasn't as bad as I was expecting. Don't get me wrong it wasn't pleasent but it was survivable. Didn't get too much sleep but did manage to sleep at the beach quite a bit. A few other mates had an apartment and they looked a lot less knackered at the end of the week!

We did feel like we were amongst the oldest 10% there. A couple of lads camping near us were on their first holiday without their parents (bless!) and I think that was a bit of a theme. The campsite was absolute carnage most nights and I've never seen as many wrecked tents and people at any of the festivals I've been to before in the last 15 years but I guess if you have an apartment then you'll miss most of it.

Once inside the 'arena' bit (which I'm not a fan of in general) you can get away from the kids a bit more. I noticed the main stage wasn't as bad during some acts. Primal Scream wasn't that bad - some lad camping near us had never even heard of them! And Arcade Fire were up against Tinie Tempah, and a lot of the younger crowd went to watch TT - Kids today!

I'd recommend keeping an eye on this. Last year they nicked all three Beni headliners - Arcade Fire, Strokes, Arctics - and chucked them all on for 80 euros a ticket over the same weekend.

I went. It was brilliant. I'll probably go again next year. Or to Optimus Alive, which is on the same weekend as Beni next year, so may get the same idea.

Plus booze, food and accommodation are all cheap in Portugal.
