[i hope Redknapp's legendary man-management powers will transform England from also-rans into champions. I see no reason why, if true, it would not work immediately. Presumably he will be sacked if this is not the case. Virtually the only quality assigned to him by his followers is man management, so if that is proved bogus, the reason for his appointment evaporates.

Listening to the radio today there has been so much revising of history in terms of england managers.

I have heard a few people saying england havent had a decent manager since el tel, who apparently produced a great english side in euro 96. I went to six games in that tournament and it was in terms of quality it was extremely poor. I think people are remember england threw rose tinted glasses and remembering gazzas goal and a demolition of a dutch team with similar morale to france in the last world cup. For the majority of the tournament england were very mediocre and only got to the semis because of a homer referee in the qf. Also apparently Sven was a flop, completely disagree, he got the most from that squad. You could argue he was overpaid but thats to his credit that he could play the FA like a fiddle.

An interesting point from one journalist is that england just look for someone different to what they have. You had the lovable cockney venables, then the continental englishman hoddle, the passionate, amazing man mangement skills keegan, the continental european sven, the nice guy english coach mclaren, the continental coach capello and back to the cockeny man of the people Arry. Funny thing is that despite trying all these different type of managers, very little has changed. Could it possibly be more down to the players!

I agree with that. Outside of the semi against Germany where England played well but lost, they managed just 15 minutes of good football in the whole tournament (against Holland).

Maybe so, but Its an interesting stat this season that Rooney has not been shown a single card. Seems to have controlled his temper a bit!

All the same, Utd/Liverpool is exactly the sort of game that's likely to bring out his more nutty side, and his tweeting at the beginning of the week suggested to me that he's been hyped up for it all week.

Then again, I guess that obviousness of him being over-hyped by that tweeting might cause a few words to be spoken to him before kick-off. So perhaps he'll succeed in keeping himself under control. But probably not.

2 years ago he was a good candidate, however I dont think he is the same player now. Seems to have lost a yard of pace and it really shows.

Amazingly according to the radio today, big sam is 4th highest ranked english manager in the league system and nigel adkins 5th!

If Venables had been an amazing manager England would have won that tournament with home advantage. France hadnt hit their peak while germany were on their way downhill. Italy who probably had the best players messed up playing a reserve team in a group game and the czech team who got to the final were very average. Actually looking back online my memory has possibly been skewed by the terrible knockout stages, I saw the group games in anfield and there were 11 goals in 3 games which is pretty good. Then the 3 knockouts I saw there were 3 goals in 3 games which all went to extra time and they werent exciting matches with little goals! Sad to say I saw the great zidane live twice and dont remember.

Agreed. But position for position, I don't think there's anyone else that could be up there. And he's only right up there because there's a shortage of top quality full-backs around atm.

Another misleading quote I have heard a few times the last few days is the world cup is an easier tournament than the euros. I would agree that the group phase at the world cup is easier, however the extra knockout round tends to filter out some of the medicore sides. You only have to look at the finalists to see only the world elite teams make world cup finals.

Yes, I think if you asked most people to name the best left back in the world they would probably just name the highest profile/best one from their country as there are no outstanding candidates. Actually thinking about it football is currently pretty weak in terms of quality of defenders. The likes of vidic are very good players but not fit to be mentioned along the likes of baresi, maldini, canavrro, nadal, blanc, desailly etc
