again, a question from me: do you remember al these awesome posters and flyers everywhere in shangri la? you know, all that stuff about the disease that was killing mankind and the flights away from earth and stuff? i was idiotic enough not to take any of them, did anyone? or did someone make photos? i'd love to see some of them again...

Art at London Pleasure Gardens:

London Pleasure Gardens will be transforming Pontoon Dock from its current state of dereliction into an artistic and cultural hub. We intend to provide Londoners with a vibrant and exciting cultural experience that is both avant-garde and inclusive. We are inviting artists and creative collectives to join us in reshaping the capital’s arts landscape. This is a truly groundbreaking project, a role model for future transformation use of vacant sites by creative people. This is our chance to showcase our skills on our own, high profile site during the games.

Details:

Areas of the London Pleasure Gardens site including our extensive wall space and fencing will be embellished with stunning graphics designed by our team of Artists, various Guest Artists which could include you!

We would like to invite you to submit your artwork to be considered for this opportunity.

We are looking for graphic work and illustrations that thematically fit our artistic vision, enhancing the look and feel of our 21^st Century Pleasure Gardens.

Selected entries will be collated and compiled to produce an extensive and engaging collage in a Victorian decoupage style featured around the site, which will be visited daily by hundreds and thousands of Londoners, Tourists, Olympic visitors, Guests and Performers at the Gardens.

Specifics:

We're after characters and decorative elements depicting what the Pleasure Gardens means historically and what they mean now.

This could simply be one of these things or a mixture of all of them, combined to create a wallpaper montage,

The original 17^th century pleasure gardens were a place of inspiration, entertainment, communication and culture – we’d like you to consider what this means to us presently and what it will mean in 20 or 50 years time.

Designs could portray single characters, strolling couples enjoying their surroundings, performers entertaining the crowds or full scenes of revelling parties.

I'm contemplating going BLOC for it but I don't wanna spunk 60 odd quid on a night where i'd be rushing back from work when I could just go the next weekend and have a proper go at it!

Given their investment in this new more permanent project in London, is it likely that the Shargri-La team may find themselves insufficiently resourced to make a return to Glastonbury in 2013?

Uh next year will be my first Glastonbury and I love stuff like Blade Runner so Shangri-La really intrigued me. Although I'll only be 17 so I'm going to assume you've got to be 18 to go?

No, there's no one there checking ID or refusing entry lol

I'm not sure about alcohol when underage - again I've never seen security/stewards taking alcohiol off anyone - but i guess if walking round drinking it could happen

I think with the thousands of people drinking pints/cans or holding plastic bottles of spirits youd blend in

unless..youre 4ft or something crazy!

I have had the Old Bill walk past while I was skinning up and all they did was smile, shake their fingers and say tut tut.

If you were mainlining heroin it might be slightly different though.......

Bloc @ London Pleasure Gardens not off to the best of starts by the sound of things

Fears about overcrowding led to the shutdown one of the UK's largest electronic music festivals on Friday night amid chaotic scenes and the arrival of police to help facilitate the evacuation of thousands of people from the venue in London's docklands.

Irate members of the public lambasted Bloc 2012 on Twitter as a "disaster" and a "car crash" although its own official feed continued to generate tweets as if the event at the Royal Victoria Docks was proceeding without hitches.

Some of the biggest acts in electronic dance music had been brought together at the London Pleasure Gardens in the Royal Victoria Docks, where a 60,000-square-metre outdoor derelict space had been redesigned by the team behind Glastonbury's Shangri-La.

The US rapper Snoop Dogg was billed to headline on Friday night, while Orbital were due to entertain the masses on Saturday. It was the first time that Bloc had been held outside a holiday resort, with Pontin's in Hemsby and Butlin's in Minehead having hosted the festival in previous years.

The continuation of the festival into the weekend appeared to be in doubt as many ticket holders were prevented from entering after queuing for hours, while extra police made their way to the location before midnight to oversee the departure of those inside.

Anger on Twitter gathered around the #bloc hashtag as pictures were relayed of festival goers standing behind crowd barriers with police looking on. Tickets had ranged in price from £55 to £125 and Friday night had been described on the event's official website as a sellout.

Bloc is um a disaster right now. "we're in the middle of a car crash". Could it just be shut down?

The music writer Dan Hancox reported shortly after midnight that the police had "cut the site in two", tweeting earlier: "Bloc is um a disaster right now. We're in the middle of a car crash."

The reaction of another Twitter user, Rob Gregg, was typical: "Bloc is the worst festival I've ever been to. I don't know how they've managed it."

Another, Lauren Strain, tweeted: "Scary, and very nearly led to injuries; all we were told was 'move back' – where to exactly?"
