2013 Headliners

Neil - In that article it also said something about Rolling Stones doing shows at Olympic Stadium this summer. How much is there to back this up? Because doing shows to 80,000 people (probably more because of standing) doesn't rule them out entirely, but makes Glastonbury a little bit of a pointless show, financially speaking

The thing is as well that 6 of the ten arctic's songs are on the first album and 3 on the second, whereas the Kasabian ones are spread so more likely to get plaid. Arctics have already said they've stopped playing songs such as fake tales of San francisco as the subject matter doesn't interest them anymore, so that lessens the chance of people knowing them.

If anything, past history suggests it makes it more likely. Quite a few recent headliners have been paid by the Hard Rock Calling gigs they've done at more or less the same time. Glasto gives you exposure (live on BBC1), The big stadium gigs pay you cash.

I'm not saying I think they will play but being at the Olympic Stadium or Twickenham doesn't make them less likely.

Off the top of my head, I reckon non-fanboys would recognise the following songs at a festival:

Arctic Monkeys

View from the afternoon

....Dancefloor

......San Francisco

Mardy Bum

A Certain Romance

When the Sun Goes Down

Brianstorm

Teddy Picker

Fluorescent Adolescent

R U Mine

Kasabian

Shoot the Runner

Me Plus One

Underdog

Fire

Days Are Forgotten

Empire

Club Foot

L.S.F

Reason is Treason

Where did all the love go

Basically roughly the same amount of somgs, but Kasabian will play most if not all of the above, whereas casual listeners only really know the songs off first two Arctic's albums. Songs from Humbug or Suck it and See are hardly ever played on radio.

FWIW, I quite like the arctics' music, but Kasabian seem to put on a better live show. Either are big enough to headline and both are equally likely to absolutely nail it, or fall flat on their feet.

I imagine one of the things The Stones must be mulling over, is how many tickets they could actually sell if they did their own stadium tour. My guess is the demand isn't what it used to be

but there's so many people who are happy to pay for a show just to tick on a list... so who knows?

I'm sorry but that seems like a load of garbage. I have the first 3 Kasabian albums and still can't think atm what Me Plus One sounds like. Reason Is Treason was only released in limited copies before the album came out so I have no idea how casual listeners are going to recognise that.

And I can't figure out why you've left AM's work from FWN to R U mine off the list. DSDCIMYC, Crying Lightening and Cornerstone. No idea how a casual listener wouldn't have heard the lead singles off AM's last 2 albums but has heard stuff like Where Did All The Love Go. LBTLCO actually charted higher than any Kasabian single bar Fire and that's not on your list.

it suggests that they might, nowt more. It's based on long-standing and variously sourced info about pencilled-in plans for a show or more at Hyde Park with Live Nation, but which now isn't possible at Hyde Park with Live Nation.

If the Stones want to do Hyde Park, they'll need to use a different promoter - which is quite possible, but probably unlikely.

If they stick with LN then transferring the planned shows to the Olympic Park is the obvious choice, but not the only choice - there's rumours of Twickenham, and who knows, they could do Wembley instead.

yeah, it would.

A bunch of old men who do shows for the money and have been for decades are not going to do endless shows just because someone is asking them to. There'll be a limit on the number they're prepared to do (I've no idea what that limit might be tho).

They'll have all the offers on the table and will do some but not all. Which they chose to do will be chosen on whatever criteria they're working to, which in the past will have defo been the up-front payment for the show - which Glasto can't compete with.

I reckon Glasto's only chance comes if they're prepared to put that way of working aside and look at the bigger picture, and history has always suggested to me that they won't. But I'm only guessing really.

i suppose but surely everything you've said detracts from the strength of the rumour?

anyway i'm not gonna nitpick about your rating system

there's what I guess at, and then there's solid info that the rumours are worked from. They're not the same things.

All the while the stones have that offer on the table, it's more than just a rumour that they might play - which keeps them as a strong rumour.

the crowd really didnt help them, they were annoyed about it you could tell. the atmosphere was wrong at hackney, dont judge them by that performance! ive seen them about five times (not a massive fan they have, as someone else said, just been everywhere in the past few years) and that set was so boring i agree, but don't judge them ENTIRELY on it! they are good at putting on a show usually.

    • Going with Oxfam.  Just booked my ferry today.  Looking forward!
    • The Radio Dept.?! That's a surprise to me, they haven't toured in like 8 years. Hopefully they will announce some more shows.
    • I was assuming September in Stirling might have a different issue tbf in the form of it just pissing it down.
    • Yeah so many of mine seem to be just France v Spain in one semi and England/Brazil v Argentina in the other. But the fact those combos are the obvious ones mean it feels unlikely that'll happen because in World Cup history, you very rarely end up with what pre-tournament looks like the obvious final 4. We all see teams outperform and underperform. Which one is the fall guy is a different matter.   I've said elsewhere that for me, there's a hierarchy of Spain, France and Argentina as the 3 strongest looking, then England and Portugal, then Brazil and Germany, but that overall, they'd be the 7 likeliest to win. So I dunno, maybe this will be the time the Netherlands avenge the failure of total football in 1974 and achieve what they couldn't achieve through whatever the f**k Nigel de Jong was with his 2010 final karate moves.
