Its worth noting that MCR's new album was released in a very strong chart week up against Take That, JLS, Westlife, Rihanna, Susan Boyle, Cheryl Cole etc - it was never going to hit the top of the charts. I believe it sold about 32,000 copies first week which isnt huge but would easy be top 3 most weeks of the year.

They've definitely lost some steam with how long they've been away but they're still doing arenas on tour and they've had a good relationship with Reading ever since they made the effort to play both sites in one day in 2005 rather than pull out.

I'm pretty sure that in R+L's entire history they've never had 3 repeat headliners, which I don't beieve is just by chance

So if these rumours are true then MCR would have to be headlining which I just can't see happening

It'd be a massive risk as they're a band that do put people off as well as drawing them others in

They already have a tour for next year, which has yet to sell out a show, and they're new album which people were expecting to be massive didn't even break top 10 in the album charts (I know record sales aren't the be all and end all but Arcade Fire managed a number one and beforehand people didn't think they were big enough to headline)

So for all people saying that the rumours are boring, there's almost definitely gonna be a few surprises

The amount of bands that play arenas is increasing (i guess because more and more people are actually going to gigs). An arena tour (and one that hasn't sold out yet) does not mean you can headline.

That is pretty much 100% correct sir. It's very much the case that smaller bands are being seen as bigger then they actually are just because of an Arena tour. I think it's definatly the case that nowadays an Arena tour does not equate to being a headliner. Times are changing.

That said, we are clearing running out of bands on the up and and coming who can headline these types of festivals.

They (along with Blink 182 and Paramore) were said, by Radio One, to be announced for either Soni or Download. Unfortunately neither have claimed them and they're the only two that would contest us for them.

MCR's an interesting one. Ever since they were first rumoured on here last year, their defenders have insisted that the new album will definitely make them massive, but the album sales and ticket sales for their arena tour haven't gone a particularly long way to proving this. Throw in the fact that they're a hugely devisive band (of my group likely to consider Reading, a few would be interested, but the others would be outraged that they're taking a headline spot,) and you do wonder if they'll be put in a sub-headliner spot.

I still think they'll headline though. As someone mentioned, there's a real lack of bands likely to make the jump up to headline status anytime soon, there's not a great amount of alternatives, and though it pains me slightly to say it, they're probably no more of a risk than Arcade Fire.

Unlike OKB, I'm not saying 'definitely' about any of these.

But they've come at me now from two different directions, one a regular source who gets a lot of things right (tho occasionally does get things wrong), and the other a new source but who has been able to prove to my satisfaction that he also gets good info.

All in all, I'm of the belief that these names are much more likely to be right than wrong, but I can't be sure that they're right which is why they're 'strong rumours' and not the more definite 'tbc'.
