Good on them for finally getting engaged, it'll be nice to have some happiness in the news! On a rather girly note; I wonder what the dress is going to be like, has to be British designer but who, can actually see her going quite simple and chic.

People actually think that this is news?

What pathetically deferential, sad, servile serfs they are.

Isn't it time we dumped this backward, archaic farce into the dustbin of history where it truly belongs and became a republic like every liberal democracy in the modern world?

I love the way that Kate is being described as being from a typical middle class family ... I dunno about you, but no one I know that thinks themselves middle class has several million or more in the bank.

Still, it fits nicely with old-aristo Dave Moron and even more old-aristo-wife with their inherited £30M+ in the bank regarding themselves as middle-class too. I guess that's why when Dave Moron says "we're all in this together" he thinks everyone else is also hiring vanity staff to take their photos and not having to bother about the effects of recession. ;)

Self-made millionaires aren't they? You'd hardly call the likes of Jordan or Wayne Rooney upperclass? (would you?)

Supposedly "self made", yep, tho I'm always cynical about that cos it's so often wrongly applied - for example, Branson is mostly described as that, but his success is based on being from a wealthy establishment family, a massive VAT fraud, and family connections to allow him to keep the fraudulently obtained VAT money and keep him out of clink. ;)

But, yep, I agree completely - Kate's family (if really the claimed 'self made'), Jordan and Rooney don't get anywhere near anything above middle class, and nearly all those who like to regard themselves as middle class similarly don't get any nearer to Kate & co than Kate & co do to the likes of old-aristo Dave Moron.

Which gets to pan out as most people not being the middle class that most like to wrongly regard themselves as. Middle class means an awful lot more than simply putting on a shirt when you're going to work, but that's the basis most are working from.

they were talking about her yesterday, saying she had a normal boarding school education

normal for some

Yep. But to the likes of Dave Moron with his stated belief in his own middle-classness and his Eton education, that is 'normal'.

I heard an interview yesterday on radio 4 with one of her school friends, who said "she was very popular with the boys" - who then had to backtrack so that she wasn't suggesting that Kate was a slag.:lol:

I'm not sure it really matters whether anyone regards themselves as middle class. Unless by middle class, you are in fact meaning a certain income level?

nope - it's not just about income.

Camberley (famous for the "Camberley man" comment, to mean "loads of money but no class at all, tacky as hell") is full of wealthy people people that don't rate anything above chav class.

I would say that the majority of people who describe themselves as middle class are middle class, since being middle class is linked with aspiration. This aspiration is probably the most important factor explaining much of what has happened to the country, good or bad, in the postwar period - especially as most measurements of middle class have shown that this group is growing.

middle class is NOT aspiration. Do you think the old flat-cap working class types didn't have aspirations?

    • Fontaines getting the honour of the last ever BBC Maida Vale session going out on 6 Music shortly.   No Glastonbury relevance (for now.. ), just thought I'd mention it for those who are interested 😎
    • Had a wonderful booking in one of our primary woodland venues this weekend. A 30th birthday arranged by a load of musicians and entertainment industry professionals. It was primarily a folk oriented event, however I noticed one young woman who didn’t seem to fit dress and appearance wise. Turned out to be Frenetic, one of the top up and coming UK Jungle and DnB DJ’s.    Anyway Saturday night turned into an EDM session and I got to do a set. Slightly nervous considering who was there, it was great and Frenetic loved my set. She’s closing Data Mine at Shambala this year.
    • they got lucky and the thunderstorms stayed away. It was still wet of course. Some of those boot sucking puddles did emerge from what a couple friends saw who were there.  Post fest aerial also below   and also a sapphic mud wrestling contest?
    • It's even less funny when in real life too...   Liddle met Rachel Royce and the couple soon became romantically involved.[84] In January 2004 the couple married at a ceremony in Malaysia. They had been living in Heytesbury, Wiltshire, and had two sons together. Six months later, Liddle moved in with Alicia Monckton, a 22-year-old receptionist at The Spectator. It transpired that he had cut short his honeymoon with Royce so that he could be with Monckton. Following their divorce, Liddle and Royce exchanged attacks in the media. Liddle called her a "total slut and slattern"
