I've been looking forward to this for a while now. Considering staying up for the first one but they're talking about half an hour's worth of tests before the capsule goes down, then it'll take a while to get there, then the medic does the checks, then it'll take about twenty minutes to come up. Still good stuff all round considering a story like this usually ends in the number of lives lost, such as with the Kursk.

Must say I thought it was hilarious when they told them they'd rescue them by Christmas... in mid-August.

I was under the impression the whole process will take up to 2 days to complete.

Whilst everyone is hoping it will all go well, there is still a lot at stake. That winch has to lower and lift that capsule at least 68 times (33 miners x 2 trips for the capsule itself, adding at least 2 trips more for the paramedic that is heading down and needs to come back up eventually!) There are the 3 kinks apparently in the bored tunnel...

it's not foolproof and obviously never ever been done before.

I wish the entire operation such good luck and hope that no bad news comes from any of it.

Apparently Laurence Golbourne the Mining Minister who has been the face and voice of the operation is now being touted as a future president following his delivery of his talks and ability to deal with the situation so well and calmly and there are even rumours he has secured a domain name for when the election is due in 2014!

I'm hitting the hay, doesnt look like there will be anyone coming out of the ground for at least 2 hours (add on though extra time for the paramedic and whoever else that is heading down to meet the miners, assess their state and situation and then give the go ahead for the first man to come up).

Nighty night and may there be wonderful images to wake up to in the morning and a day or two onwards full of good news.

And dont go whinging the footage is dull while you wait, the fact that it is happening at all is a bloody miracle! Be patient and happy in the whole event and its hopefully good outcomes.

this is a really amazing, emotional story.

the second miner to be rescued:

Sepulveda delighted the crowds by producing rocks as ironic gifts from a sack before leading the congregation of officials, relatives and rescuers in an impromptu, celebratory chant.

Found it - the Whipala. The Wipala flag is symbolic of the indigenous population in Bolivia and the Antiplano region of the Andes, under Article 6, section II of the new Bolivian constitution it has been established as the dual flag of Bolivia along with the red, yellow, and green banner.

In modern times the rainbow flag has been associated with the Tawantinsuyu and is displayed as a symbol of Inca heritage in Peru and Bolivia. There is debate as to whether there was an Inca or Tawantisuyu flag. There are 16th and 17th century chronicles and references that support the idea of a banner, or flag, attributable to the Inca.

Hmmm one for the campsite i think

edited to add:

Unlikely to miss the tent with one of these:
