Bands you thought would be big

2. Hell is for heroes - After their debut I thought they were the great british rock/metal hope but they just dropped off the face ot the earth.

The Stands. Not sure exactly what happened after their second album, but Howie's solo stuff stands up.

Stellastarr*, after releasing a decent debut with a few great singles, they released a brilliant second album to no response. They were also the first band I ever went to go see. Completely blew the support band away, who went on to a bit more success.

Secret Machines, on record they're superb, I haven't seen them live though

and for a live band who I have seen who haven't become a huge act

T.A.T., very cool female fronted punk band got a load of hype from their "Peace, Sex & Tea" single and some decent support slots but took too long to release their album and when they did they didn't actually tour it in the UK. The girl now works in a coffee shop.

Another band that should have been big is Caesars, they did that song Jerk it out which was on the back of the Itunes adverts, and have wrote some really quality psycadellic pop songs. I reckon they would have been as big as The Dandy Warhols were in the late 90's early 00's

Gay Dad, I know everyone [pretty much treats them as a joke now but at the time the hype around them was unbelieveable. I still think they're an excellent band.

1990s, Another act with alot of hype around them especially with there links to The Yummy Fur. Brilliant debut and alot of coverage in the press, 2nd album released and not much is said. They still have a massive following though.

Following up from a pub conversation yesterday. Who are the bands who growing up you thought would be big but never really took off. A few of mine.

1. Crackout - Wrote 2 albums of catchy pop songs, I think if radio 1 had supported them, they wouldnt have headlined festivals but would have sold a lot of records.

2. Hell is for heroes - After their debut I thought they were the great british rock/metal hope but they just dropped off the face ot the earth.

3. 3 Colours red - After the commercial success of beautiful day I thought they were destined to headline arenas but they never followed it up.

Any other thoughts?

Violent Delight, where a fun crappy punk band who wrote shit songs and had decent videos and were singed to a major label but like most UK punk bands they get ignored infavour of the America counterparts. Saw their comeback gig a few years ago promising a new album and some festivals shows but never materialised and I don't think they have played a show since then.

On a related note, and not a band, but David Ford should be huge. Amazingly talented, seems a genuinely nice guy, and releases great albums.

Hell is for Heroes were the first band I ever saw live (supporting Papa Roach ) Saw the play their last (I think) gig at Barfly and it was epic.

Hope of the States were superb live, Lost Riots was a fantastic album, Left was good but not up to the same standard. Same them play King Tuts in Glasgow and it was one of my top gigs. Superb act:(

pretty decent size i guess, but after a near perfect debut and living up to a very rockstar image (trashing kerrang offices after they slagged em off if i remember correctly?) they could have been world beaters.

always killer live too. hmmmm

I love this band, but my god they're just infuriating. Fantastic debut and a solid second album, then they went through a few things and dropped off the face of the planet. When they brought out the third album in 08 i was happy to have them back but they haven't followed it up, a few shows in australia in feb 09 and after that NOTHING. The odd cryptic message on facebook, that's it. The website hasn't been updated since 2008, do they not realise that if the die hards are questioning whether they're still together then the casual fan wont even bother searching about it, they'll just accept they're gone.

In comparison, weezer released the red album in the same week the music released strength in numbers in 2008. Difference is since then weezer knocked out an album in 09 and another one for this year, whilst the music have produced sweet f.a. unfortunately.

I love the band, but i just wish they'd pull their f**king finger out!

Colour; they were a cracking band, split up a year or so ago. Their tunes were incredible.

The Longpigs.

Though you can kind of see why they failed: cocaine addiction, lead singer in a coma after a car crash, two record labels folding- the administrators of the first wanting £500,000 before they were allowed to sign for anyone else, the second folding days after the release of the second album, drummer bottleing the lead singer...

Mansun and Kula Shaker....small success but should have gone on to bigger things.
