I think that's just cockneys to be honest with you. Don't remember any of that when England weren't playing at Wembley but at Old Trafford etc.

hey CBC, was it you that reckoned I was insane when I suggested that Kevin Davies was the perfect Heskey replacement?

I can't remember if it was you or not, but someone defo thought I was off my rocker. I guess Fabio is too.

Not that I'm saying Fabio made a good choice there, but if you're a manager who thinks England should use that sort of player* then Davies was always the next nearest.

* while I don't agree that England should use that sort of player (because on paper they have players who don't need a thug-type player on the field with them), it's certainly the case that in recent games it's been England's most effective tactic - which just gets to show how shit they really are.

Could you name some good managers and why they are then?

Fergie - a man who knows how to use a bunch of players who (overall) are quite a way from being the best in the world in an extremely effective way!!

Fabio doesn't have a clue how to get the best out of the players he picks. In the end he defaults to the standard English way of playing a Heskey/Davies because he has no other ideas.

I meant more at international level. Some very unremarkable managers at club level have done very well at international and vice versa.

On paper Fabio looked a good bet. In reality he's shown himself as shit.

Someone posted (i think) yesterday that the FA need to stop letting the media appoint the manager and pick the players. And that was spot on.

Much as I hate Alladyce's style of football, I reckon he'd actually be a decent England manager - because I reckon he's probably man enough to ignore the papers and do his own thing. It might not work out, but as recent history gets to show, doing things the other way doesn't either.

To be honest, you could put Fergie or Mourinho incharge of England and it would still be the same, it's not the managers fault that the pool of 'talent' in the English game is pretty dire (what other supposed 'big' country in the world at International level would pick Gareth Barry and SWP ffs??? Or stick with a striker whose scored 2 goals in 20 odd games?).

England have been terrible since '96 (and they weren't much cop then either) on the world stage, nothing looks like changing very soon. We're a mediocre international team who I'd probably put on the same level as say Norway or Sweden.

If anything England need a manager who wont give a crap what the media think and just majorly shake up the team (i'd probably drop the lot and use the under 21s at the mo tbh, couldn't actually be any worse to watch could they?) and drop all the 'favourites' who have done sod all for England over the years.

Nope, it wouldn't be the same.

They're managers who know their own mind, and who realise that the best players don't necessarily make the best team.

That’s good news. One set of useless yanks down, one to go.

Some people are suggesting it sets a precedent for the defaulting of debts by clubs (which of course would include Utd in that scope), and perhaps it does from one angle.

But the paperwork was clearly in RBS's/the board's favour in this instance, while that's not going to be the case in all other instances. So I'm not sure it has any relevance for Utd if things go tits up for the Glazers.

However, this may not clean up the mess on the pitch, even with the 40m they apparently have in January.

yup - but it should at least change things from a downward spiral to something more even in the short term. And if NESV are all that's been claimed, it should see an up-turn in the long run.

However, it doesn't look like it's quite over yet - there's a new court date of 21st Oct, for NESV to try to get the judge to rule that their purchase is safe from legal come-back.

I'd guess that with things looking in RBS's favour, and them likely to get re-paid in full very shortly, they'll be happy to let things go on as they are until that date, and not impose the financial penalties that they're entitled to - the case was never really about them wanting those penalty payments, but wanting the re-paying of the loan.

11.22am: Mr Justice Floyd has declined to grant an appeal. The judge said it would be inappropriate in the circumstances for him to grant leave. He said that if Hicks and Gillett are determined to appeal, they would have to apply to the appeal court for permission.

======

The 'new' (reinstated) board are having a board meeting tonight at 8pm to decide the sale. They've been asked if it'll be sold to NESV and said "no idea", but I suspect that's really just a legal nicety so that they can't be accused of making a decision outside of the board meeting.

I guess it's possible that they might consider Lim's new offer that trumps NESV, but I suspect he was ruled out on more than just the offer price.

They cant accept Lims offer can they though? They have a sale agreed with NESV.

It might be the case that that deal was made with a board that wasn't the legal board at the time, so it's possible that what they've agreed previously isn't binding.

But I suspect that deal with NESV will be the deal they back tonight, whatever the situation is around what they agreed previously.

I'd guess that they need to make sure that do everything in a way that's not open to a further legal challenge - after all, while H&G have lost this case and (basically) been told they can't appeal, there's nothing stopping them from launching a new case on a different basis.
