Yep. And its pretty safe to assume there were guns at Fort Hood military base too but he still managed to kill 13 people.

There was a SWAT team called at Columbine and a load of police there too but they didn't get into the school until way after the shooters had killed themselves. Outside being shot at for 30 minutes through the window.

There's a very interesting article by Monbiot in today's Guardian, which is putting forwards the idea that the rise in violent crime during the 20 century, and it's subsequent recent fall, is all the result of lead poisoning (from petrol, pipes, and paint).

I've no idea how solid that idea might end up being (there's an amount of uncertainty about it currently), but it certainly seems to make logical sense.

Monbiot is however, one of the biggest hypocrites I've ever had the misfortune to hear speak though.

no more or less of a hypocrite but less of liar than one of your major heroes, who had the audacity to claim that the rich aren't getting a tax cut of 5% in April on TV this morning.

But anyway, my interest was in the research that Monbiot was talking about (which is nothing to do with him), and what it said. He didn't claim it was beyond doubt, but the correlation between lead being easily accessible in the everyday environment and violence in society is an interesting one.

If it's right, it explains the sudden fall in violent crime in the last decade or so, which none of the standard ideas about crime can account for.

There are loads of theories one of which is the availability of abortion, which has a similar corelation when put against crime figures in the US. Another was the rise of the video game which again shows a similar relationship. Very ironic seeing as people used to say they cause violence.

video games could explain as rise in violent, but not it's fall in the last decade (when violent gaming has become far more widespread than previously).

I'm not sure how abortion figures might correlate for the fall. Have abortion rates been dropping in the USA?

The gaming theory is more about young folk staying in more and how relationships have changed. I will try to find it.

it didn't take reading much of that to see that it's not a global phenomenon, and so doesn't stand up to scrutiny as well (from what Monbiot has written) as the lead theory does.
