It's about as likely that someone would kill themselves off the back of a minor prank like this as it is a shopkeeper tops himself when you say his prices are too high and you'll shop somewhere else.

Disagree the words that should come out are "this is a tragic situation which was possibly avoidable, what steps can be done to ensure this doesnt happen again".

Nope, the exact opposite - we shouldn;'t take any notice at all.

People throw themselves off tall buildings (exactly as a good friend of mine did ).... that doesn't mean we should ban tall buildings, does it?

The building was not the problem of my friend, just as the prank call was not the problem of this woman.

I have to laugh at the hospital - they are claiming that they supported the nurse (and perhaps they did). But if a hospital with fully qualified medical staff in cvontact with the woman is not able to recognise the potential impact onto this woman then why does anything think that DJs on the other side of the world can do better??

I don't think this was the minor prank you are trivialising it to be. This was a prank involving the two of the most famous people in the world, a prank that made worldwide coverage, and she was the butt of that prank and must have felt massively humiliated. Some people aren't as thick skinned. Knowing the worlds media is making a huge deal of it she probably felt everyone on the planet was saying "oh god, how did the stupid cow fall for that". As well as thinking her job was in danger and she had let down the royal family (who she probably had a lot of respect for, even if you can't picture it). Its not as trivial as you're try to paint it

yep - she probably did think her job was in danger - which only gets to prove the hospital as liars that did not give her the support they have claimed.

And sorry, but if we now have a world where humiliation thru failure is regarded as a legitimate reason for topping ourselves then we might as well all top ourselves now because we are all going to feel humiliated by failure.

As I say, shit happens. Sometimes people shit on themselves, and when they do that is their own doing and not another's.

I give it a month or so before we found out that the tabloids and other media were hounding the nurse before she killed herself and hence while all the coverage seems to be pretty much about how the aussie DJ's are oh so evil for what amounts to a silly prank.

Yes it's not the type of humor for alot of us here and it is extremely childish but essentially it's just a prank that I doubt they would have thought for a second would have been taken seriously let alone led to someone committing suicide....

That's a bit harsh. She could have had underlying mental health issues and this was just the straw that broke the camels back as it were. Some people are just naturally more vulnerable or resilient than others.

i'm working on the basis that she did have some underlying issues - in which case the prank call was not responsible, it was merely a minor factor.

or alternatively, an employer - and especially a hospital - should make the judgement call on whether their staff members are prepared for all situations that might come their way - after all, this is a private hospital treating slebs all the time and likely to get unwanted enquiries about its patients.

If te DJs sould ave factored te possibility into teir doings, te same applies no less wit te hospital.

The issue is wider than what the DJs did however. You've got to wonder whether they hounded the poor woman in the run up to her death, I wouldn't bet against it.

I don't think it matters whether it caused the nurse to kill herself or it was just minor inconvenience. There should be a vague sense of what's remotely 'proper' behaviour, and I don't see how phoning a hospital and pretending to be the queen is in any way ok... especially in the name of entertainment for some crappy radio show.

There might be some 'unproper' behaviour in a festival crowd, better ban festivals just in case.
