It's the festival that has banned them.

"No animals (except registered guide dogs), sound systems, generators, sky lanterns or kites, unauthorised fireworks, or wax flares, large fires or burning of plastic will be allowed on site."

Obviously you may not agree with that, but in general Glastonbury is one of the more liberal festivals - it doesn't prohibit things without good reason (in my opinion of course).

It's easy to appear to be a killjoy or party pooper in this discussion but....

The one thing we all want is for Glasto to continue. Should a serious accident occur the whole licence could be jeopardised, especially if they've ignored the advice of the fire service.

Yes rules get bent and blind eyes turned but officially Glasto has to go along with the fire service requests and recommendations.

I also think as festival goers we've got to show a bit of common sense.

The big difference, as someone pointed out earlier, between lanterns and barbecues/fires is that generally barbecues are attended.

Once you let off a lantern it may well come to ground somewhere that isn't attended and then you may have problems.

I love watching the lanterns but I love going to Glasto more.

I'd say it's not. Fire brigades don't tend to be very alarmist. They mostly give out balanced advice based on their expert knowledge, from seeing things most of us are fortunate enough not to have any experience of.

    • I don’t think the festival automatically ‘need’ to have a female headliner if you have strong female headliners on the Other Stage (which I reckon will be Rosalia and Phoebe Bridgers), perhaps a female legend (praying for Annie, will take Cher), and a few female/mix gendered subs on the Pyramid (maybe London Grammar, The xx). From what I’ve seen of Sabrina, her team prioritises the pay day and I think she will be doing Wembley over Glasto weekend.   One thing I’ve noticed is a lot of the suggestions would be first time headliners and I can’t work out when the last time was that the festival had three artists top the bill that hadn’t topped it before? It seems to be something they like to do to make sure they have a ‘safe’ headliner that will land well with the masses. Plenty of names in that hat that could step back up next summer and should/could be about: Billie Eilish, Adele, Foo Fighters, The Cure, Radiohead, U2…hell, if Beyoncé is really planning to release a ‘rock n roll’ album to complete her Renaissance trilogy, Glastonbury would be a great place to ‘kick off’ that campaign for her.   And there’s always the Rihanna rumour. Her husband (I think) said this week she’s in the studio.
    • And all (or all but one) of the secret sets repeats though?
    • 1. Coming with my sister (our 4th Sziget together) 2. 3 days (Thursday-Saturday). Would rather do Tuesday-Thursday but not enough AL 😞 3. Wednesday evening  4. Apartment  5. FATM (will be my 10th Florence’s gig) 6. Parcels/Paris Paloma
    • Temperature was the main issue - luke warm at best
