The U2 warm up threads

I'm actually inclined to disagree, even though what you say makes perfect sense. I'd reckon that over half of a typical U2 audience in the UK have seen the band before, a large chunk of them many times. This will naturally diminish excitement levels for those individuals (there's nothing like your first time - Just ask Jarvis!!!).

At Glastonbury there are going to be vast numbers of people who are really excited about seeing them for the first and probably only time. Plus, lets be honest, the crowd are likely to be "enjoying themselves" a fair bit more than a Wembley crowd.

They most certainly will be but who's talking about the gigs they're doing before and after Glastonbury? Their performance at Glastonbury is going to be scrutinised by everyone with an interest in (live) music in the UK. People on these boards, and many others besides, will be commenting, reviewing and debating their Glasto performance for years to come.

I promise you there won't be a large number of people talking about their standard stadium dates on the current tour in even just a year's time. If they get it right, U2 @ Glasto will be mentioned and remembered for years and years to come. In fact, if they get it wrong that's true as well.

If Glasto goes badly it won't ruin them but it will taint them for a large number of people, particularly non-obsessives. If it goes brilliantly they will sell another 2 million albums and sell-out extra nights at Wembley for their next 2 or 3 tours.

They surely - surely - must know that they shouldn't end Glastonbury on a song that hardly anyone outside of the U2-hardcore knows, and one that is such a moody/whimper. They might well do it (chances are pretty high - it has closed every single show this tour) but surely...

Even Better than the Real Thing to open I think is the safest bet. It's been a great opener for them lately, it's a juiced up/dance-ish version of it, a real *bang* of an opener. And if they do that straight into Vertigo straight into New Years Day, then you've got 'em where you want 'em.

If the closer is not Moment of Surrender, I would say that the safe money is surely either One or With or Without You.

But I think All I Want is You would be great, for that singalong factor. One, and moreso With or Without You have it, but All I Want is You has a better spirit to it. It's a bit more rowdy at the end, and there's more of a call/response thing between Bono/Crowd. Would work really, really well.

With Or Without You is the perfect finisher for Glasto. Most U2 fans would like 40 but bearing in mind the crowd I would finish with WOWY. Like people have said, open up with 3 classics such as EBTTRT, Beautiful Day and Vertigo and they will be like putty in your hands. Keep up a high tempo, keeping smashing out the hits and it will go down as a classic. They have the capability but will they do it....

I am not fussy so do not want 23 songs. My ideal line up might be something like this (in no particular order!):

1. Where the streets have no name

2. I have still haven't found what I am looking for

3. One tree hill

4. Pride

5. Trying to throw you arms around the world

6. October

7. New Years Day

8. Sunday Bloody Sunday

9. A sort of Homecoming

10. Unforgettable Fire

11. All I want is you

12. Desire

13. Van Diemens Land

14. When love comes to town (with BB King obviously)

15. Miss sarajevo

16. One

Encore

17. With or without you

18. Running to Stand Still

19. Bad

20. 40 (oh yes!)

As you can tell I am an old U2 fan, but bloody hell would that be awesome!!!

Unlike Muse, U2 don't need to bring out a special guest to make their set seem better than it actually it. Muse's set last year was a self indulgent w*nkfest. Yes The Edge was good but it was the most predicable thing they ever could have done and they did it. Got I didn't know how much more I could take from w*nky guitar solo after w*nky guitar solo. Bellamy is an arrogant money grabbing bastard.

U2 are gonna be absolutely blinding and would have been even with the visuals but and it definately wont be self indulgant and shit like Muse's set was last year.
