Russy - that's not what people are saying. Who has said 'everyone else'? Like it or not (and I detect a slight hint in your posts to suggest you're in the 'not' camp on this occasion) a lot of people WILL want to see it. Not everyone - but certainly enough to warrant showing it on the Wednesday where any potential problems in screening it would be minimal. And the organisers will know this.

As for the Saturday/Sunday - saying they might amend the timetable may appear absurd when we've all paid to go to Glastonbury and not Cape Town, but if you think that Eavis's main priority is safety, he will have to think very hard about how to appease the masses in the safest way possible IF it's shown.

Which for me means the safest, most simple option for any game that might take place on Saturday or Sunday is to categorically state that it WON'T be shown. And if they do that, I shan't be complaining. I might utter a quick 'ah well' but it's not going to stop me enjoying myself at the festival.

Phil made an extremely good point (to which I didn't reply last night as I've just read it now) when he asked me where anyone determined to watch the game would go if it wasn't shown. My initial thought was a nearby town, but there's nowhere nearly big enough to accomodate such smelly desperate (as in wanting to watch the game) people. Bristol maybe? It's hardly down the road. Phil - the git that he is - has made me think again on this. If they don't show the 2nd game, I think it's now quite likely that any exodus will be minimal. What will those left on site with no access to the game do? Riot? Nope - probably just carry on drinking and revelling in the Glastonbury madness like the rest of us. I therefore concede my earlier point.

To be quite honest, I think anyone leaving the site to watch the game would be barking mad, but the fact is that the world cup generates HUGE interest, Glastonbury or not.

I'm going to take a portable radio. Unless there's something going on around the site I don't want to miss. Otherwise, radio outside the red flag sounds like a good option.

Why not use the Other Stage, and its screens.

Not ideal - but given all the ponts above about the 40th, not using a Pyramid slot etc etc , then just use a slot from the Other Stage. Its a compromise. Or don't show it at all.

I saw the 1998 match in the Cinema field - (never been that wet whilst dressed !! ) but as the cinema moved last year, thats not an option I assume - and anyway, that field was rammed that year despite very heavy rain and 30,000 fewer people on site.

If it's sunny next year, then only the Pyramid or Other Stage could cope with the numbers, wherever the Cinema field is.

So use the Other Stage - its big field, so should be enough room - and there will be a big draw on the Pyramid - further easing the crush.

I agree with this entirely.

The thing that is irritating me about this thread (well irritating is the wrong word, I couldnt really care less but I am happy to wade into these discussions due to the boredom factor at work) is that a lot of people in this thread (I am not referring to you of course mate) are saying things like it MUST be shown on the pyramid and that the 4th most prestigious slot at glastonbury on the 40th anniversary should be cancelled in place of a football match. It is ludicrous to expect (and a lot of people are expecting this!) that such a slot should be given over to football.

Of course it's fun for us all to speculate, but for those actually making the decisions, simply saying "it'll probably OK" will not be sufficient.

Potential plans will be scrutinised. If someone proposed a "no show" policy, then those with concerns would want their exit forecast to be based on a prior experience. And there's the rub - there isn't one in recent Glastonbury history.

Since 1996, and possibly further back, the festival has never run a "we're not showing it" policy for any England World Cup or Euro Game.

Even in 2009, a much lower profile Rugby game was shown, after the festival initially indicated it would not. The idea that the festival will hold firm for the World Cup, having relented for a much lesser event, is unlikely.

Maybe they won't show the game. But history says they will.

The Wednesday game should be fine - there are no problematic clashes with bands on the main stages and I think that'll be like the Portugal match in 2004.

Of course, none of us know what they'll decide yet, and it's a decision I'm glad I don't have to make.

If they don't show it then what is to stop every stall in the markets putting a TV on their counter and showing it? It'll cause mayhem.

I think they have to show it for safety reasons.

I wish we'd got group E or F and then we wouldn't have this problem!!

Problems:

1. They can't just shut the gates. People have to be free to leave the site as and when they need to. There was a thread on here about a guy who is thinking about going to Glasto around the time his wife is due to give birth. Could you imagine the poor bugger getting the news she's in labour but not allowed off site because he might be off to watch the game? People need to come and go from the site all weekend long for a variety of reasons. They can't just close the gates on people.

2. I don't think this could work for a knock out game. Imagine they show the 2nd half and it ends level, then switch it off in time for the next band to come on. That'd be popular!!

IF it's shown, I think it should be the full game and not just the middle bit. Which again points to it not being shown at all to be on the safe side.
