Thankfully? Do you mean you're happy it's no longer popular? Rock and indie have been the bedrock of this festival for as long as I can remember. It wouldn't be anywhere near as popular as it now is without it and getting tickets would be far far easier. 

 

I have come to terms with the fact I'm getting old now and that most of the new Glasto crowd would rather see pop tripe like Sabrina Carpenter sing over a backing track badly than see a quality rock band playing music live. Always comes down to personal tastes I suppose.

I’m amazed with some of the statements I’ve seen, 

 

There are the generic “rubbish lineup”, “worst line up ever” 

 

Then I’ve seen these more idiotic statements …..

 

”Not what it used to be” 

“Bands are rubbish these days” 

“What’s  happened to rock and roll”

”It’s all teeny bopper pop”

 

Then the pinnacle and the one I did actually bite back on…..

 

“It’s all just black artists these days”….. yes seriously

 

However  I do have a fave moan and it is when people say “I’m so glad I didn’t get tickets this year”

 

mainly because it allows me to say ….

 

”Me too” ………. And by ‘me too’ I actually mean I’m also glad you didn’t get tickets …… if you don’t like that line up you don’t deserve them 🤷‍♂️😂

Yes I am glad that what is currently known as indie and contemporary rock are no longer popular, they’re both “dull as dishwater”.

 

As for them being the bedrock of Glastonbury, this is just not true. Again I suggest people go back and look at previous lineups. It’s always been a diverse and eclectic festival, one of its strengths. 
 

I’ve been going since 1985 and if your statement were true I wouldn’t have lasted more than a couple of years.

 

Mind you the definition of indie seems to have changed, it used to refer to acts signed to an independent label and was incredibly diverse, not really a definable genre musically. These days it seems to have become a genre comprising of guitar bands only.

I could easily argue that there are no where near enough black artists, particularly in the Reggae and Hiphop genres.

Outside of one day/no camping city events/festivals it’s become the norm sadly. Which is a great shame as culturally diversity in both the artists performing and the punters/crew makes for a more interesting experience.

Indie dominated the festival for a period in the naughties, but would you really say now, with the benefit of hindsight, that those were the glory years of the festival?

 

Rock has a much longer relationship with the festival, but of the top line this year Neil, Rod and Olivia are all bringing the rock - so its hardly as if its been dispensed with.

As an indie/rock fan I'm delighted with the lineup this year (putting aside my annual pulp disappointment). I think there really is something for everyone and I don't mind that two of the 3 headliners aren't really for me, plenty going on elsewhere.

 

Compared to recent years they've done a much better job with booking bands and rock/indie acts that have been lacking in recent history as it's pivoted toward a pop/tiktok audience.

 

Neil/Prodge/Weezer/Franz/Supergrass/Fogerty/Libertines etc - We're so back!!

It's still catering to a tiktok audience - naughties indie sleaze is a big trend

Olivia Rodrigo isn't Rock. She's pop rock and the 'pop' is doing the heavy lifting there for sure. She's a pop star. 

 

Neil Young I will grant you is rock. He's definitely in keeping with the tradition albeit I think he's well past his best but that's not what we are talking about. 

 

I don't think the festival is quite as edgy and rock and roll as it once was when I started going. It's becoming more and more mainstream by the year and definitely trying to adjust to what the younger audience are listening to.

 

My first ever year was 2004. Oasis, Macca and Muse. Now that's what I call a set of headliners.

Newsflash: Some of us aren't 14 year old girls who listen to Taylor Swift.

 

Lads tend to like rock/indie and dance music. I'm no different. Also like Reggae and a bit of soul music too as it happens.
