Sorry but Neil Young is definitely not a high profile name by any standards. We are coping here. This is the weakest trio of headliners in decades (and I personally enjoy the 1975)

And to answer your first question there are some similar level acts to the ones mentioned currently touring such as Beyonce or Gaga.

Putting personal preference aside, as a set of headliners it’s similar in size to most years (Elton and Macca are exceptions, as was 2023 for different reasons, not the rule). The 1975 are an Arena act for a few years now and have previously headlined Reading/Leeds and Trnsmt. Neil Young is an all time legend, previous headliner and is headlining BST. Rodrigo cleaned out Arenas last year, and is headlining BST, Pinkpop, Werchter and Roskilde.

Beyonce and Gaga would have been bigger but if they won’t do it for the money  or have other plans not a lot Glastonbury can do.

The irony of all the 'terrible headliner' twitter and facebook comments crowd is that even if Glastonbury had pulled a mega headliner like a Beyonce or Taylor Swift the exact same people would still be moaning that it's become 'v fest pop for teenage girls' and so on.

Neil Young isn’t high profile to you. Not everyone else.

North of 30m albums sold, 28 Grammy nominations, numerous publications list him in their lists of greatest artists, best bands, best guitarists, best song writers etc etc.

Your standards to be high profile are what exactly? Is the list limited to Paul McCartney, Stones, Oasis, Elton John, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift? Woof, only 9 possible headliners available in the world to impress you that are “high profile”.

Check the top 50 global artists at the moment. Any if those would fit in the description. Not even asking for the 3 of them to be that relevant, and definitely not asking to have a legend every year as McCartney or Elton.

I think all that demonstrates is you don't know anything about Neil Young. Might wanna check the size of the venues he's playing 😄

Please enlighten me because I am seeing a lot of small venues in towns of Sweden and Norway in his tour.

Glastonbury can't have a worldie every year, and that doesn't mean they're struggling either.

Stormzy, The Killers and The Cure is generally regarded as one of the best trio of headline sets we've had in the last decade-and-a-half, I'd argue.

They all smashed it. Whereas 2023s trio of actual stadium acts got a very mixed reception. There were plenty of complaints about McCartneys first 90 minutes too.

I saw someone say that Supergrass should be headlining instead of O-Rod as the organizers would not know talent if it hit them in the face with the added no one knows any of these acts they have picked.

That was my favourite of the day

Fender feels like the obvious miss. Like, glaringly obvious. But his health issues are possibly a barrier, and the festival may well have wondered if any of their subs would have been match-fit as a promotion such he bail.

Yep. It's a very strange miss this year for Sam.

2027 could happen but it's so long off it won't have nearly as much excitement of having him on the way up/ at his likely peak like he is this year.

Either:

1. They just completely missed the boat somehow and didn't realise his appeal and what would be his perfect timing of his 3rd album release etc. (even though it's been known to anyone interested he was planning to release his 3rd album beginning of 2025)

2. They wanted him but had already commitment to 1975 couple of years somehow (maybe covid year perhaps) and also wanted at least one female headliner

I love Neil Young but I'm really not sure it was the right choice this year. I'll perhaps watch 30mins at best.

There are loads more acts that are more relevant and high profile than just those 9. Blur, The Killers, Arctic Monkeys, Stevie Wonder, Adele, Eminem, Madonna, Rihanna, Muse, Foo Fighters, Green Day just off the top of my head.

Sure, maybe none of these were available or within budget or played too recently and maybe Neil Young is the biggest they could have got, but he's nowhere near megastar level, despite the number of albums he sold in the US 50 years ago.

The 1975 is potentially that "cash-in" moment - and I think, if they can avoid it, they'll never have a year with three male-dominated headliners as long as they are able to.

I was calling for both - The 1975 on a Friday and Sam Fender on a Saturday felt perfectly timed. I appreciate the Young booking is to add that heritage element that shores up a percentage of the crowd, but I'm also quite frank in my admission that I could happily see just one repeat headliner every five years.

Genuinely, when was the last time we had three new headliners?

2024: Coldplay

2023: Arctic Monkeys

2022: Paul McCartney

2019: The Killers, The Cure

2017: Radiohead

2016: Muse, Coldplay

2015: The Who

There you have it. 2014 was the last time we had three completely new headline options on the Pyramid.

Could be he isn’t interested as he wants to sell his Stadium dates and there’s an issue with the promoters.

Could be GFL has figured they’ve more chance of getting him in the future than they have Neil Young.

He said he already has a lot of his fourth album written so could be he’s perfectly

lined up for 2027.

You can only book the field. If there is a case that a mega-watt headliner is topping the bill elsewhere in the UK, then yes, you could argue that Glastonbury have missed the boat.

But who've we got? Travis Scott, Hozier, Bring Me the Horizon, Chappell Roan, Sleep Token, Korn, Green Day, Sting, Stereophonics, Justin Timberlake, 50 Cent, Biffy Clyro and Snow Patrol.

Of those, the latter two are already playing lower spots at Glastonbury and virtually none of the others would arguably eclipse Young bar Green Day and Timberlake - both of whom have gone where the higher money is.

I mean, heck, if we're doing an apples-to-oranges and let us say Timberlake is a bigger deal than Neil Young, are Sting and Stereophonics a bigger deal than The 1975 and Olivia Rodrigo too? Of course they're not.

Glastonbury has this reputation because, once in a while, it nabs a one-off nowhere else on the festival circuit, and it feels like a big deal. But they are, genuinely, few and far between.

Checks and balances, and all that jazz. Glastonbury has the best set of headliners at a festival in terms of size in the UK this summer. It's getting harder to honestly compare to the European market because of Brexit and additional costs, let alone America.

I get the impression album number four could come late 2026 or early 2027. If he is able to keep momentum up - and I'd wager that an R+L slot next summer, with maybe BST too, can help there - then he is a shoo-in for the 2027 dance card.

he doesnt change his set structure cause he doesnt want to be a beatles jukebox. If he was one of those artists that just did crowd pleasers then theres 10 more beatles songs a show. But dude still writes  new music. I have no gripes about it.

I respect everyone’s individual opinions and preferences, but saying Neil Young isn’t high profile by any standards, that’s possibly the worst take in musical opinion history

sure! he's basically touring open air amphitheatres and castles, which is all very Neil Young. So throughout USA, Germany, Ireland etc they are typically 20-30k. Hyde Park London of course. He'll be playing to about half a million people all things considered in 2025 (assuming he doesnt cancel or add loads of new ones).

That is certainly true - if there is no bigger and better artist available, then so be it. However, that doesn't mean we should pretend he's an amazing booking.

Perhaps not, but for many, he will be. As we say, apples to oranges, chalk and cheese.

I have to admit that the headline feel pretty weak to me, not because they're small artists, but because with Glastonbury you always expect either worldies os less accessible, more uniques choices. I mean, in the last tean years, we've had names like Kanye West, Coldplay, Adele, Paul McCartney, Kendrick Lamar or Elton John... And considering that artists like Oasis, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga or even Post Malone are touring this year, the headline is a bit underwhelming. Its fine (there are plenty of great things to see anyway!) but this year Glasto doesn't feel like it offers more than any other festival, and it used to.

Superb. Saved me typing out a long post to this effect. In terms of what is available on the festival circuit Glastonbury has done very well.

Neil Young isn't a high profile name? 🤣

He has been inducted into the rock n roll hall of fame...twice! And he is a tried and tested Pyramid Stage headliner, who absolutely smashed it the last time he did it. The word 'legend' springs to mind.

Whether the headliners are considered weak or not it does not matter one bit, the whole lineup is unreal! Look how many of the artists on there would comfortably headline or are headlining other festivals? It’s a much better lineup than I was anticipating, fair play to Emily & co., even with some of the apparent misses (could still be added at a later date) the lineup is fantastic and better than you’ll be seeing anywhere else this year.
