Saw this:

In the Bookseller this week and it made me wonder who buys books at Glastonbury? I know there are normally a couple of second hand stalls in the markets but wouldn't have thought there was demand for it.

Nooooooooo, my wife is a total bookworm, she will spend all weekend there, which means I'll ill to endure another trip to IKEA for more billy bookcases, she has just over 1000 books which i think is enough but apparently not.

It was one of the joys of moving house last year that we had room for 6 more Billys, there's actually room for new books for a change.

I've just read the article and noticed they're planning on having signings from 'musician-authors'. So which musicians that currently have books in print will be at the festival?

Mike Heron's book is just out.

The paperback of Hooky's New Order book is due the week after the festival.

Dave Grohl's mum has something coming out.

Off the top of my head but I'm sure there's more will nose about next time I'm at work.

Interesting that they are going to make onsite orders berts-able as they can often deliver the next day. Am not going to tell my husband as I lose him for hours at the one at the Avalon as it is and then we have to carry everything he has bought home. Ah maybe they will be fulfilling orders to peoples homes so they dont have to carry them?

Kate Tempest will almost definitely be involved in that, I'd have thought. I keep meaning to read her book, actually. My reading list is longer than my listening list at the moment though so it'll be a while before that happens :P

Not a lot I love more than having a nosey round a second hand bookstore so I'll be down there for sure

Just noticed its in The Park as well, so that's another reason not to leave :)

We moved house last year, my wife now has a dedicated study/library, absolutes made her year, unfortunately it's already at full capacity, I said she would have to reduce the number of books she has, didn't go down well at all.

There was a public library set up one year at The Big Chill by the MLA as was (Museums, Libraries, Archives), I was one of the lucky librarians that ran it.  Not entirely successful as a concept in itself, we had all our furniture nicked on the fist night.  Funnily enough most of the books stayed put.  The books were excess stock donated by publishers so mostly small runs of nothing anyone had ever heard of.  We did have some really good author talks though which were well subscribed,

Glastonbury were approached to be the festival with the first 'Public Library' but they weren't interested which is why the BIg Chill got it.  So nothing new here really..

I'm still a Librarian and Bertrams are the suppliers I buy from as do most local authorities.  I feel like setting up a 'pop up' guerilla public library next to this book shop in the Park.

"Glastonbury supports private book shop business but not public libraries. even though Michael says he supports Public Libraries....shocker!!!"  Is the catchy slogan we could shout and have printed on quite big t shirts.

Actually I don't really give a shit, I was just reminded of being offered the 'first ever Public Library managers job at one of the world's best festivals' only to end up at a cold and muddy Big Chill and not Glastonbury.

One of the things I really like at eotr is the 'library' in the woods. A smattering of books, but better is the author talks in the morning, especially for those of us who are early risers. A cup of coffee and someone doing a q&a or a riding from their (usually) music related book. Really civilised way to start the day.

Although years ago, I remember a fantastic reading of a Heathcote Williams book at Glastonbury. That sort of thing seems to have died out a bit (is the free university of Glastonbury thing still going? Never really took off, did it?)

Kizzie, when I was younger I always wanted to be a librarian (and still do, come to think of it!). You're living the dream. Do you get to do as much reading while you're at work as I think? lol

Oh yes, lots and lots of reading for me. Time sheets, staffing rotas, loads of boring boring emails, budget forecasts, endless health & safety guff, sickness absence reports......I'm nodding off.

Living the dream me

Shame Glasto didn't run with the public library idea, it could have worked really well. I've been tempted by the University as they've had some good speakers, but I've never actually been. If it was somewhere a bit more easily accessible I'd pop my head in there, but it's at the Crow's Nest which must be the least accessible venue in the whole place. At least Strummerville is handy for those in Worthy View.

If done well this bookstore could be a good thing, but as any of the talks/signings are unlikely to be on the official lineup you have to ask how many people will know about them?

Does Howard Marks count? Now that was an amazing way to ease into Sunday morning. Sat against a tree in the Glade, mushroom and spinach crepe, coffee and a smoke while listening to him ramble on. Sorely missed :(

Oh...my dream of being a librarian just took a bit of a hit lol. Sure it's quite a nice atmosphere to do all those things in though!

    • Proper special gig tonight. They won't mean much to most people, but The Dogs D'Amour were one of the most significant bands of my youth.   Tyla, yer main man of said band, was playing in Birkenhead tonight. Not many there, but it was going fine. Then he decided he didn't like the smoke and the flashing lights so suggested moving the gig to the beer garden. Off we all went, and it was magical. Like having your favourite musician play in your garden. I absolutely loved it.   Before:     After:
