Sonic stage

I'm not sure what I'm doing yet on Friday night, but one option is to catch Stormzy and then hang around for Kano on the Sonic.

Firstly, what is that stage like? Don't think I've ever watched an act on the Sonic but Silver Hayes seems to be everyone's worst area at the festival, and the Sonic stage/tent seems to get particular stick. What's the problems with it? Is the sound just terrible?

Secondly, how busy do you think it'll get for Stormzy through to Kano? I was hoping it wouldn't be too bad as it will competing against the other Friday headliners.  But if I'm stuck at the edge/back, combined with poor sound then I fear it could be a bit crap.

And lastly, I swear the line up used to have Charlie Sloth between Kano and Stormzy? Which I was quite looking forward to as I just assumed he'd be hyping the crowd up and playing some decent Hip Hop before Kano. However he now seems to have been replaced by Kurupt FM, which I've never heard of. I've looked them up and they seem to be some sort of novelty comedy act, which seems a bit shit. Anyone know what to expect from these?

Cheers for any replies.

It's like a big huge open gazebo.

I've spent a couple of good days in there :)

If you are not inside middle of Sonic, it's sound is not great. If the venue is already full, give up!

Sonic gets a lot of stick I think primarily because of the way it's designed and the effect this has on being able to see/hear what's on stage. It can get incredibly busy for the bigger acts resulting in most people being stuck outside suffering from aforementioned issues.

Cheers for the replies, it seems to be a case of judging how busy it's going to be, and deciding on that. I'm guessing that it'll be more busy for Stormzy than Kano as he has the hype train around him at the moment.

I mite head upto the Sonic straight after Foals and if it looks rammed I'll just got to the Other and watch Disclosure and try and head back after to catch Kano.

Still confused as to what the hell Kurupt FM are planning todo for 75 mins?! I'm guessing just play some hip hop and be a sort of comedy DJ over the top of it.

Kurupt FM are from a series called People Just Do Nothing. They're respected within the grime/garage scene, and are basically a parody of pirate radio. They perform their own stuff mostly, will probably have guests including Stormzy who's a big fan. I'd YouTube Kurupt FM Mistajam and watch the 60 minute one for an idea of what to expect.

Nice, I'll check it out now.

It really is a poorly designed area/stage for Live Music. Like it has been said, you need to be right in the middle facing the stage to get the best out of it. Anywhere on the edge/outside gets sound bleed, although if they have moved it slightly to where the PP used to be then it might be a bit better this year.

it's a bit of a shame really seeing as it's the main venue for showcasing the more dance-y stuff.

I was hoping as he'll be competing against the headliners then it mite be a bit quieter, but just can't see me being able to get centre stage for him, he's so popular now.

Really looking forward to Foals and there's no way I'll be able to drag myself away early from that, so I won't be able to get there early either.

Stormzy's set will be rammed......as a spectacle i'd highly recommend The Kurupt FM gang though, purely for the comedy.

As mentioned above, unless you get into the centre pod (of the 3) it can be a disappointing experience. Had a torrid time there for Fatboy Slim in 2014.

Stormzy will be pretty busy I'd say

I can't see Kano getting that big crowd against the headliners though

Makes you think they could have put him in the JP maybe?

Anyway, think I mite do Disclosure  and then try and get to Kano ASAP after.

Sonic is the worst stage at Glastonbury, in my opinion

Agreed. It's such a shame given the quality of some of the acts on there.

I can kinda see what they were trying to achieve by making something that's both indoor and outdoor, but unfortunately at the end of the day it's not really any good at either.

Would be much better as a good old fashioned marquee like it used to be when there was East and West, or alternatively just another big oudoor stage.

Seems to be the consensus, I've always tried to avoid it after reading what everyone says on here.

You'd think they must know it's shit and therefore would try and do something to improve it a bit.

I imagine rather unfortunately that it's not very high on the agenda considering it's relatively new.

Saw Leftfield in there last year, who have a very bass heavy sound which shakes your bones at every other venue I've seen them at (including outdoor stage on year at Boardmasters, which was possibly the best.) Sonic was the worst of the lot. My feelings on Sonic - too quiet, no bass and lacking atmosphere in what was a giant white marquee. Saw them again at Warehouse project, and Kentish Town for the same tour, so I know it was the venue that was lacking, which was a shame as it was Glastonbury!

I used to love the dance area when it was a single dance tent . It's never been the same since it split to East and West. And Silver Hayes didn't improve things. It seemed to develop into a series of DJ's all trying to out compete each other in who could be "harder". The fun evaporated.

Occasionally the old Pussy Parlour was a sanctuary. And Despacio was completely and totally brilliant.

But otherwise the South East corner just makes Silver Hayes look unimaginative and dreary. You can enjoy the artists in the SE without having to take a load of special K. The SE is fun.

Silver Hayes has become something to pass through on the way to somewhere else.

Well put. What is it, 11 years since they buggered it up? I've never heard the situation described so well.

I saw Leftfield last year in the sonic. We got there before Gorgon City finished, so we were well early for a plum spot. We had been warned it was going to be shit if we didn't.

It was good, but not quite as loud as I hoped it would be.

The tent itself wasnt fine to be honest, but like I say, we had a plum spot. If we were at the side, we could have had a different experience

    • Proper special gig tonight. They won't mean much to most people, but The Dogs D'Amour were one of the most significant bands of my youth.   Tyla, yer main man of said band, was playing in Birkenhead tonight. Not many there, but it was going fine. Then he decided he didn't like the smoke and the flashing lights so suggested moving the gig to the beer garden. Off we all went, and it was magical. Like having your favourite musician play in your garden. I absolutely loved it.   Before:     After:
