Dodgy Knee

Hogshead

Recommended Posts

I suffered a horrific knee injury when I was about 13 (it isn't a story that people enjoy hearing - a had a fall, knee got implied, dislocated, I passed out and woke up in hospital approx. 12 hours later - emergency operations to that!) I spent 6 - 7 months without putting any weight on my left leg and just over a year going to and from physio, followed by another operation. Guess I was lucky that I was young otherwise I think the experience would have been much more stressful in adult life. I think physio is the only way to manage knee problems and not ducking out of exercise.

I happily spent a lot of money on a good mattress - it's like sleeping on a cloud.. I don't have any back or neck pain when I get up. Totally worth the spend!

Considering you spend a third of your life on the bugger, investing a fair bit of money - as much as you can afford, really - in a mattress is such a good idea for anyone, but specifically for people with bad posture/backs/physical discomfort. I really bloody hated shelling out all that dosh (HOW many pints?) but 3-4 years later of sleeping better and having much a improved lower back? Worth every penny.

My left knee is shot to the point where I have to drove an auto because it can go at any point. When it does I swear buy one of these for support.

Three days on and my knee is as good as bendable once again and I can sleep without excruciating pain waking me every time I move in bed.

I had a tear in my LCL and then a few months later sprained my ankle so badly my physio said that a clean break would have done less damage and I must admit I'm a bit worried about my first Glasto since doing all this damage. There again I did hike the Tongariro Alpine Crossing hike a month after the knee problem started.

I'm planning on carrying a small tripod stool with me and won't feel as embarrassed about having to sit. I'm in a campervan and will be taking an ice pack. Not a fan of tubigrip to be honest as I've never found one that fits properly plus I'd rather try and strengthen it and listen to my body. There again after the Brothers bar on the Wednesday it could all go to pot!

Once again. Thanks again for all your reports and advice.

Honestly appreciate that carrying a few extra kegs around hasn't helped the situation. I also appreciate that this is Glasto and I'll be doing my best to keep em topped up!!

Will invest in some physio and a decent brace for now and hope for the best.

If, whilst on you bimbling way, you see a short, rather portly bloke in a brace and carrying ( or sitting ) in a chair, no doubt with a can of something, you can afford yourself a knowing smile!

Failing that, I'll be at the efests meet!, no doubt doing something similar.

Cheers

I'm also in the old farts aches and pains dept. My problem is my back where a disc disintegrated so two of my vertebrae just rub against each other. I was given the option of having my spine fused but declined when I was warned there was a risk that if it went wrong I might not be able to walk again.

The end result is that I can't stand for long periods and have to sit down. My solution is to carry a camping chair with me at festivals - something that sometimes arouses hostile comments on here. But I only ever sit at the back or fringes of crowds and wouldn't be foolish enough to try to use it at the front. So a plea to "chair-haters" to have some sympathy for us old crocks.

Having read this thread, I so need to get a new bed.

You and me both. A new mattress is my first spending priority after Glastonbury, I've been promising myself for years, but there's always something else comes up.

I'm a big fan of a firm mattress, never had any back problems but that must be more from luck than judgement, my mattress is from the 1980s :P
