Coach Luggage Hold

VisionOfLove

Recommended Posts

Travelling by coach first time this year and seen a few different things about luggage allowance but still not really clear. Does it just depend on the driver how much he lets you on with?

Two of us are aiming to take a rucksack each, plus tent and a small trolley between us (was going to take one each but thought that is definitely pushing it) with a few crates and other bits on. Read a few stories of people being asked to dump some of their stuff to make room etc. Going to try to pack as light as possible but would like a rough idea what our limits are, so anyone's advice who's done the coach before would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

If everythings on the trolley and it's just your rucksacks you're carrying then that should be absolutely fine. I've gotten the coach for the last 3 years (not this year, missed out :( ) and we've never been stopped nor witnessed anyone have to dump anything due to lack of space. As long as you're not bringing everything in your house and the kitchen sink you'll be grand :)

What you're describing will be fine for the coach, I wouldn't take anymore. We had a situation on our coach last year that people had bought too many crates and bags and the driver had to put stuff in the aisles and steps by the door. When we arrived at Glastonbury he got shouted at by the person looking after the coach arrivals there in front of the entire coach. I felt really bad for him and it really took away from the excitement of arriving on site. There were a lot of big groups on our coach and I think they had used that as licence to bring a rucksack and tent or other bag each and then also a stack of crates that didn't really belong to any one person.

My boyfriend and I took a rucksack each, tent, bag for life of booze and a small lightweight sack truck that we took and held with us in our seats, pretty similar to what you describe and that seemed perfectly reasonable.

The rules are one rucksack and one tent per person. If you're taking a tent between you then I see no reason why you can't take a trolley too... In lieu of the 2nd tent. I have known people been told to leave stuff behind though. If there's a problem, take the trolley aboard and sit it between you and your friend.

I think it partly depends on where you're travelling from. I've travelled from Brighton and London.

Brighton was easier but the driver was really annoyed with a group of lads that thought it was acceptable for all 4 of them to have massive rucksacks, a tent each and two large trollies stacked with crates of booze all wrapped up.

He was so annoyed he sent them to the back of the queue and told them if it didn't fit, he wasn't going to rearrange the hold. He managed to get one trolley in and the rest had to go on their laps which delayed us leaving because they had to unwrap it all.

London was bad because there were just so many people. This was for NE but I can imagine See are just the same. They were ramming stuff in to every corner and seats were empty because they couldn't fit anymore luggage in the hold to accommodate more people on the coach.

I think people need to think before they pack. It's more important that everyone has a tent and essentials than it is to have crates and crates of drink. The drivers will see it like that as well. Pack cans in to your rucksack and they'll be none the wiser. We were able to pack extra stuff in our tent bag and no one knew about it.

Or even better, take spirits, they take up less room!

I was curious about this as travelling from Bristol early Wednesday morning. Luckily I've got friends who are driving down who I'm sharing a tent with so giving them some of my crates to save carrying/coach space!

For some of crates are essentials! :P

That said I found London very fair last year, but that was like the 3am coach? I even managed to get on an earlier departure as they had spare, had my pop up tent and my rucksack/booze on the same B&Q sack truck, with a dust/rain cover over it so to hide the crates, Was one of the last on that coach to!

My first time on the coach in nearly 20 years this year, national express rather than the seetickets coach so not sure what the limits might be. Just intending to take rucksack and tent myself, so hopefully that will help others with more to carry have some storage space :) My son and his mates are travelling by car so they can have my trolley and bring some beers in for me, save me the hassle of dragging them there :)

Travelled on the seetickets coach from London the last couple of years now and never seen any problems with regards to people not getting their gear on the coach (including trollies).Me and the missus manage to travel fairly light now with one rucksack for our clothing and one for booze and other essentials plus a tent. When I first went in 2007 I had pretty much the contents of my house with me but managed to whittle this down to the essentials over the years!
