dentalplan
As much as I hope it's someone good, i'm not jumping to find out as I'm probably gonna be disappointed, judging by who's touring this year. Yes - people should adopt this approach. Different guy and different festival but Copping said the exact same thing that an arena sized band was doing a secret slot and it was Black Stone Cherry who'd only just announced their maiden arena tour, so you get the impression that when someone says it's an arena sized band then they're not gonna be downplaying a festival headliner or stadium act. Prepare for BMTH/TDCC/ATL/BFMV/THEVACCINES as at the end of the day it's still a big band who wasn't on the line up in the first place. mattgimmeshelter
Exactly, it could be a band playing V who wants to play reading too. Only just thought of that
6t6o6m
I would take BFMV or BMTH.
dentalplan
Well the only arena sized band that could be would be Kaisers. Mind you it probably is them, they're mad for secret sets.

I don't even know most of the V lineup so I just guessed that it could be someone on the V bill. Wasn't an actual solid suggestion!
mattgimmeshelter
Actually. Shot in the dark Foals were rumoured here for ages, they are around and doing bestival & pilton party early September. Maybe they fit the whole "asked" and turned down but then changed their mind. Gucci Piggy
That arena band Foals who've never played an arena. Have Foals ever played an arena? I don't think they have but I'll look a tit if so. Ally Pally ain't an arena is it?
rawaudioinput
They've never headlined an arena but they're the sort of band that would do arenas on their next tour, which in promoter-bullshit-speak language probably counts
dentalplan
Why would Foals turn down a slot beforehand? Why would R+L offer? Though the same could be said about FOB and that's still going around.

Gucci Piggy
No lightning mate you've misunderstood. He meant a band which play arenas, not the band called Arena !!
rivalschools.price
I know the words 'long' and 'shot' spring to mind but Lars from Rancid is in the UK for the next fortnight.
dentalplan
Sir Alex Ferguson just announced a live date. Could it be him?

seanz25
Bowling for soup? They posted a reading backstage pass with something like 'this is where it all began' a while back. Any chance it could be them. There arena-ish. Maybe basically call it a day for UK touring finishing at R&L.

Gucci Piggy
So why can I buy tickets to see him on stage? I included the "musical" so that you couldn't use this point so HA.

I don't think they have but I'll look a tit if so. Ally Pally ain't an arena is it?As rawaudioinput says, whether they've played arenas or not has absolutely no relevance on whether the main booker for R&L considers them to be an 'arena act'.Also in the original NME story it's not definite that the act he's on about is one of the 'arena acts'. He said about seven acts contacted him ('about seven'? Bullshit alarm immediately starts ringing), two of which were arena acts, and that one of the acts that contacted him are going to be performing as a surprise. It's not clear whether he means one of the original seven acts or one of the two arena acts. Edited August 10, 2014 by mrtourette

Bowling For Soup are no where near arena sized and that photo was probably them just looking back on the past. Also they said they'd still come over to UK for festivals on their farewell tour so they wouldn't call it a day this year
#FreeComTruise
It's not clear whether he means one of the original seven acts or one of the two arena acts. didn't NME say something like "will one of the big acts be playing" and the R&L guy said they booked one of them, by the big act bit I assumed they meant the arena acts

There is a lot of assuming going on. "We always get calls about a month before the festival from bands saying, 'You know how we said we didn't want to play your festival, well now we're available and we really do,'" McIldowie said. "I've had about seven of those this year, including a couple from bands that are arena acts who want to do secret shows or do last-minute things." Quizzed on whether or not one of the acts who have contacted him will perform at the festival, he replied: "One of them will... It's going to be a surprise."
