Worthy View , how was it?

Thanks to all who replied in the ever increasing Camper vans thread, very useful and I find now a tad expensive as an alternative if I only intent to use it for Glastonbury and hiring seems extortionate. So with that in mind, who did Worth View and what were your impressions, pros and cons. We might be looking at alternatives to lugging camping gear, queuing to get in and noisy drunken teenagers so all information would be extremely helpful should we be lucky again come October.

We did Worthy V this year - had coach package tickets and couldn't be arsed lugging a tent. I thought it was good - lovely tents, decent facilities, bit less noise and much less faeces everywhere. But glamping, it ain't. I had a very reasonable two showers - the queues were too long to be bothered with more, though there are way, way shorter and faster queues for blokes. I rarely bought food or drink there - very slow queues, f-all staff and poor quality consumables. Very good security. Short on info (like site maps and stuff) and shuttle bus from festival bus station is very slow and unreliable - we walked all the way through the site on Monday morning to be sure of getting our coach on time. All in all, I'd stay there again. I was in a tent on my own and I felt pretty safe going up there on my own of an evening when others in my group were still out and about. And, yes, the hill is steep, but you're always glad when you get up there. Note for those seeking a haven - it is extremely loud up there at night. Very near The Park and the S.E. Corner and sound carrying from across the site. So, don't book in if your main reason is to get a good night's sleep!

How physically fit are you? If you don't mind walking and putting up your own tent then a self pitch at the pop up motel might be good for you. You still need to bring your own tent and put it up but you are only about 5 minutes from your car which makes it easier to do multiple trips if you need to. They have showers and toilets. They are not perfect as they did have trouble with them a couple of times over the weekend but on the whole they were available and were relatively trouble free. It's not totally quiet but is substantially quieter than on-site but it is about a 20 minute walk to get to Gate D which is the nearest one.

I liked Worthy View a lot for the following reasons:

1) No traffic AT ALL on the way in via A303/A371/Ditcheat/East Pennard

2) Car parked 1 minute from entrance, tent 5 mins from there, gate 10 mins downhill

3) Staff friendly and pleasant

4) Toilets up by us always clean

5) Shower every day, plus hairdryer - the queues weren't that bad in my opinion and moved quickly.

6) No hassle getting in or out - didn't need a 'pass' like the main site

7) Quiet campsite, got 5 to 6 hours sleep every night apart from Sat

8) Scout tent was cool, enabling kipping in past 8am.

9) We were at the right end of the site for the areas we spend out most time at - Park, WH, Green Fields etc.

10) On Sunday, I'd packed my stuff by 11am and transported it to the car by 11:05. LUXURY!! (Unlike friends who were in E10 and camped in Dairy.....their journey back to car was "hell on toast" apparently)

Only negatives were:

1) 4 man scout tent is a real squeeze for 4 adults. Fine when in bed, but not much room for dressing etc.

2) Food prices were expensive and the quality not great. Only tried them out a couple of times on the Wed/Thurs am.

I would say that those who were less than fairly fit would struggle with the hill, but luckily for me wasn't an issue as I'm trekking to Everest Base Camp in October. If I struggled with just Pennard Hill, I'd die in the Himalayas.

If we're lucky enough to get tickets again in October, I would DEFINITELY do WV, but either book a bigger tent or split our group into twos.

I had concerns about the increase in capacity this time, but it was ok. It didn't fill up till fri morning. Showers ok if go by 8am. Distance to car brilliant. Walk back at night meant I sobered up by bedtime - not sure if goodie bad - but felt ok every morning! Earplugs needed due to sound from Arcadia/SE corner.

I've stayed there for the last 2 years in a Bell tent and will stay there next year given the chance. The site was a lot bigger this year, which was both good and bad. I'll comment on things I specifically noticed / used

Pro:-

1. Sinks added this year.

2. Toilets worked for the whole time I needed to use them and were very clean.

3. More ppl = slightly more atmosphere than last year.

4. Bath Ales ran the bar (technically you can get to this bar without going to WV but you needed to leave the site)

5. The Easy Pass Out system - when you arrived they took ticket off you, gave you a *special* wristband. This meant WV specific lanes to get in and out of the festival, quick check of the band, in you go. MUCH better than last year.

6. Friendly staff, especially when checking in

7. Short walk from Car - tent.

8. We were around a lot of 1st timers - the reactions they had to seeing everything for the first time always brings a smile to my face / make me jealous!

Cons:-

1. Nowhere near enough toilets

2. tent was further away from the fence due to size of WV

3. I do miss the buzz of the main campsites (might be a rose tinted memory though as haven't camped in main site for 3 years)

For me, last year 7/10, this year 8/10. Sort more toilets out and maintain to the standard of this year and 9/10 next year

A mate of mine stayed at worthy view this year, after 3 years of staying onsite at the festival; he thought the following:

Clean, well organised

Bus from gate a/public transport

Hot water was a revelation, and men's showers were easy to access whenever he tried - though somewhat exhibitionist, not much in the way of partitioning

Atmosphere a bit lacking - not much banter

Amazing view from the lookout point

A fair few annoying patrons staying there - his exact words were 'the knobhead quota is high'

The hill was a right bastard

Tent (2-man scout tent) was very roomy, much better than expected

Overall not worth the dosh. More fun inside the fence. THOUGH we both agreed that it could be a great idea to pay £20 for a guaranteed, drawn and numbered pitch on a field somewhere, so you didn't have to tackle the scrum of Tuesday/Wednesday

lack of pass-out was great, but they took your ticket - I now have no souvenir like other years. The amount of noise depended on which way the wind was blowing.

I didn't understand the shower times (07:00-14:00 & 18:00-23:00). If you can only run for a 12 hour period in the day, surely better to have a shorter gap in the middle. We went back to our tent a couple of times around 4/5 pm before heading back 6:30ish for the rest of the evening, would have loved to have a shower then. Did anybody actually use the showers after 9pm?

I volunteered for one of the charities this year. We had our own camping field looking out onto the Pyramid field, hot showers (24 hours), two free meals a day and they paid for my parking ticket and travel expenses.

I worked five hours a day - from Thursday to Sunday - which I actually enjoyed because I got to talk to so many festival goers, and the rest of the time was my own. I met some great people and saw lots of music/cabaret: not as much as I usually would but, for instance all three headliners and quite a lot else.

I am definitely doing it again next year :)

Podpads look great £315 for 2 people and it includes a inflatable mattress (if you include a price of a decent tent and airbed its not much different) if i get tickets i am definitley doing this next year!

Do they sell out quick?

Does Worthy View have any tents with plug sockets?

My dad really wants to go to Glastonbury, but has sleep apnoea and needs power for his mask. Without it, he'll be a walking zombie, and will piss off all the neighbours with his snoring.

Yes you can pay for electrical hook up for your tent. They had hairdryers to use and you could just pay for your phone to be charged if you wanted. It was £3 per phone charge. I didn't bother with that and I saw a lot of people just used the sockets that were out for the hairdryers to get a bit more juice for their phones whilst they went for a shower.

You might want to consider a portable power pack and making use of the green fields solar charging facilities though. The only downside would be carrying it down and back again, they range in size but are essentially just a leisure battery with some additional electronics, but if you don't mind a bit of carrying for your dad each day it would probably be a workable solution.
