A group of 6 friends and I are going to glasto for the first time, we have been thinking and we reckon getting a big (8 man) tent for all of us to stay in would be a good idea! Only problem is, what sort of time would we need to be arriving on the wednesday to pitch a tent this big? We were planning/ hoping to get into Webbs Ash, but if we don't that doesn't really matter. We want to be getting to the site for when gates open, but obviously with traffic and all, what are the chances of us actually being able to get a space big enough?

Any advise appreciated,

Ben

We used to take a big tent plus a gazebo and three smaller tents for friends and neighbours. We camped at the top of Big Ground. A long trolley tow from the car park. Usually we started putting it up about Midday. By 2pm space around our encampment was pretty full. By 4pm you'd have struggled to get a decent pitch.

(P.S. To gazebo haters - someone slept in the gazebo at night - so actually it was just a tall square tent)

The other consideration about choice of camping area isn't the hassle of arrival and departure but the time spent at the festival.

It's worth a longer trek on arrival day to get your tent in the right area for the rest of the week.

I'd think about your taste in music and where you are likely to be at the end of the evening. Because then you've got your trek back to the tent.

So, if you are into John Peel stage type music and likely to end the evening on the west side you don't want a long trek across to your tent on the east side.

Similarly, if you're more likely to be at the Acoustic Tent on the east you don't want a long walk, when you are tired and emotional, right back across to your tent on the west side.

The chances are we will be getting a mini bus for us all, meaning we will get dropped of at the drop off point and then get the shuttle bus to gate C. Also we are quite likely to spend a lot of time around the pyramid and silver hayes.

We are so excited for it, its going to be amazing! Thanks for everyones help!

I hope you don't spend too much time around The Pyramid. As so many people on here will tell you there's a lot more to Glasto than the music. And a lot more music than on The Pyramid.

Enjoy a daily bimble around the site. Take in things like the Circus Fields, The Cabaret Tent and the Acoustic Tent. Get up into the Green Fields and, of course, take a trip to the Stoned Circle.

if i was you i get your 8 man tent plus a couple of gazebos and set up camp as soon as you find space then get loads of rope and rope your camp of so you dont get invaded THEN invite us all for drinks LOL

no seriously the tents nowadays ARE getting bigger and bigger so if can fit your whole group in one together no doubt youll have a great laugh and your not REALLY taking up any more room than 8/10 separate tents lol just be considerate to people around you .

there was a group next to us lot last year setting up and they asked us to move our tents cos THEY had about 30 of them turning up i replied [ honestly ] that we had about 45 but yea we could sort some thing out but they were not happy so ended up telling them where to go ......this on the first day so not a good startplus i was pissed off cos the security wouldnt let us walk across that bit of land they had put by for the stones ....any way after chatting to a couple of the sensible one we sorted it out lol..

by the end of the festi we were ALL agreeing to catch each other next/this year same spot ect ect even the arse wipes were ok lol

the lesson here is its your festi experience so dont let people tell you where you can and cant camp but make friends wot ever cos yove got to spend the next 5 days with them so you might as well make it a good 5 days .

wow that was a long one old sons soz

no no don't you worry, we will be doing a good lot of exploring all around the site as well, we have heard before that a lot of the best bits happen in the places you don't expect so i will make sure we get around :) and that seems like a good idea, whatever happens make sure we are friendly with the neighbours haha

they appear to be from 2010 { two others from the same batch }

there is some sites kicking about that shows shuttle buses in action

although I did post a site that was more detailed in that - but dont have a clue where.

looking back - you either get a year when its scorching or a year when its dead wet and some years when its near impossible to move about - I survived 85 which was far worse than 82 which had the highest rainfall for a single day in 45 years {on the Friday} but 85 was far worse for Mud - yes I know there has been other muddy years but 85 really takes the biscuit .

first is a scan of one of my images from the late 80's - the pyramid stage is just behind me and I am facing east - that van does not look all that stuck - well it was well stuck and tractor after tractor just could not shift it - its the first time I have seen a tractor that was supposed to be towing people out on the Monday ending up being stuck themselves - you just could not make it up

the bigger mystery is how I was able to get my mini out on the Monday { shot taken when four of us were on our way there } - I know we did get out without a tow but I drove out on my own as there was no way I could have got it out if they were sitting in it - once on a real road I stopped and then dug out all the mud that had been collected underneath it.

well we will not know until close to the festival what its going to be like - the odds are it will not be dry but who knows the odds may be wrong.

the guy in the denim jacket is the biggest Dope smoker I know - there used to be a Cafe - well it was supposed to be a cafe - everyone called it The Reggae Tent - you could buy ' anything ' in there - legal or not - It was up where the original market used to be { which was just as you drove in via the main entrance to the right } - just walking in there was so much dope in the air we were all instantly stoned - no mobiles in those days ' but we knew where to find him ' as he spent all the days in there and we had to drag him down to the Pyramid stage as otherwise he would never have left -The Reggae Tent was there until the late 80's and then they were asked not to come back - a real shame but they were worried about the license - Mendip District Council would have pulled the plug if they ever walked into it.

Another shot from the 80's - note what looks like rubbish to the middle right - that was in fact two people sleeping there - very hardy in those days .

    • A win is a win but it was a very poor game with only 4 shots on target in the whole game. Scotland obviously handed a massive bonus with Brazil and Morocco drawing but I don't think either of them will be too worried.
