THANK YOU.

I thought that was completely unacceptable.

How come every time anyone expresses a weariness over the harsh nature of musical criticism and discussion, the automatic reply is "it would be boring if we all agreed"?

NO IT WOULDN'T. That's the thing. It absolutely would not be boring. It would be brilliant.

Just think. As fun as it was assigning bands to biscuits in this thread, we could have spent the past five pages discussing what, if anything, Travis mean to us. We could have shared our favourite Travis songs, our favourite Travis memories (of which I have 12. Obviously).

If everybody liked everything nobody would feel superior or alienated for liking/not liking any given thing. And that would be beautiful.

Of course, there'd be questions of quality - if we were agreed that all were brilliant then how would we know what truly constitutes as "good" - but if the idea that we might all get along strikes you as boring, then maybe you should spend less time on the internet?

What's truly boring? The idea that liking certain bands in some way determines the sort of person I am. Those that jump into threads with OH SO WITTY put-downs think they're coming across as dangerous cavaliers of discerning taste. They're not. They're just repeating thoughtless, tired and tedious buzz-words in a desparate attempt to garner attention. And this they always receive, but I wonder if they realise that in behaving as such they automatically become 100% more boring than any band could ever possibly be.

I don't want people to commit to a blanket appreciation of everything, but I do wish there was a little bit more respect and understanding. People are so close-minded when criticising the taste of others. Bands are written-off, and so are those who dare to admit to an appreciation. It's a terrible shame and it brings out the very worst in people.

I saw Travis last night at a small comeback gig in London and they were great, considering they've been away for a while. They'd be great for doing an hour on the Pyramid at lunchtime when everyone's still recovering from the night before (like The Lightning Seeds three years back...)

    • So bad honestly. I get that bad weather happens but their communication was non existent. When you're managing crowds of tens of thousands of people, it's just not good enough. I left when Massive Attack was cancelled (the first time) and it genuinely did feel unsafe trying to get out. No one knew what was going on, people still sitting in the ground when there were hoards of people trying to leave, no crowd management at all...   I've been to PS enough times to know sometimes you need to just roll with it but this was way worse than "the bar queue was 30 minutes long".    Today will be better but still feel super disappointed.
