Depressingly it looks like Mumford now have to popularity to become a headline act after their next release, but I think they suit V fest much more. Where has good music gone to? I mainly go to the fest to see the older bands now, I always moan about the new bands, it's a sad situation seeing as I'm 20 years of age. I came of age just as the big bands of the day went shit or broke up, (Strokes, Libertines, Arctics etc.), then cheesy, manufactured pop came back in vogue as I hit my formative years, shit timing really. My only consolation is that I got the reunions of Pulp, Suede, The Stone Roses and Pixies, but it's a bugger when all your favourite music is borrowed from other generations. And I'm sorry for derailing the thread with my bellyaching.

If Bloc Party, Biffy Clyro and WTT headlined that would be a very underwhelming trio. It needs a massive headliner along the lines of Blur, Metallica, Green Day to go there. Biffy will one day headline R&L but I'm not convinced on Bloc Party, I can't see them making the step up at R&L, they could at the IOW Fest but, like QOTSA I can't see them anything other than subs at R&L.

While KOL is a great example of a band making less interesting music in order to become mainstream it would be nice if a band could release a debut album that captured everyone's imagination and signalled a shift in the popular music tastes. I can't remember one since the Arctics over 6 years ago now. Unfortunately while there are still good bands out there they are just not popular with the youth of today who buy records and essentially that is what dictates what gets radio play. I see The Enemy got to number 9 in the album charts today and I really think their latest effort is the best I have heard in years.

^^^I can't disagree with any of those points. I never even follow the charts and haven't done since I was about 14, the only reason I noticed where they got to was through Facebook. The comparison with Oasis is spot on as well but seeing as though they were the band of my generation that's probably why I like The Enemy so much as the influence is clear to see.

I think whether you like Arctic's or not, you have to congratulate them for being willing to actually evolve as a band and progress/change their sound, when they could have easily done an Oasis and released their debut several times, made life easier for themselves, got to number one everytime and now be having cocaine in their sugar puffs every morning.

Arctic's are almost the anti K.O.L. While Arctic's have moved away from the generic (yet very good) sound of their debut record and looked to progress their sound to something more interesting, K.O.L have moved away from the sound of their first three records (which Arctic's are ironically moving towards now) and have moved towards the generic cliched sound of their latest records.

I'd congratulate any act which seeks to move their sound forward, arguably taking a harder path than they had to do.
