it depends whether his haranguing them/attempted-banning them is done for honest reasons, or not.

If the journo has fabricated a story* then I'm right behind fergie giving him some, but given what happened with the giggs thing - which at best was a huge over-reaction - plus fergie being well-known for going well over the top it's difficult to give fergie the benefit of the doubt.

As I have said previous I think judging players on pre season form is dangerous. If Berbatov was allowed to go and Rooney or hernandez got a big injury I wouldnt personally have confidence in the replacements.

Just cos fergie might have denied them doesn't mean they're false. His anger might not be about invented words, but instead about words he said that he didn't want reported.

In fact, I'd say he'd be more likely to be more angry about the latter than the former - after all, words of no truth happen around football all the time, and in 99% of cases there's not really any damage done anywhere from them; it's water off a duck's back. Whereas if secret negotiations are revealed, then there's clearly the potential for damage else they wouldn't have them in secret in the first place.

And while I know the press write endless bollocks about football, I'm starting to think that there might be something to this alleged transfer after all. They don't normally stick with a story so strongly after official denials, which then suggests they might have had off-the-record briefings of some kind. And perhaps Fergie thought he was being 'off the record' while the journo took the view that he didn't explicitly say it so it wasn't there - it happens.

Whether or not the quotes are real doesn't really matter. Cass is (was? ) meant to be one of the journalists that Fergie got on well with, so possibility that he may have said something, but if he did it most definitely would've been off the record.

If we were in deep negotiations and publishing these quotes (real or not) has jeopardised any chances of a deal, then pretty understandable that Fergie could be pissed off.
