Some people, if you camp in their 'space' will become aggressive, which then bums out your festival as you don't feel comfortable at your own tent, I haven't experienced this myself but last year some friends tried to pitch a tent next to a taped off gazebo and the owners crowded them, telling them that they weren't camping there in a very forceful manner. They'd already part pitched one tent at this point and decided to pack up and find somewhere more friendly.

My pet hate last year was seeing people who had collected several of the steel drum waste/recylcing bins and built a wall in front of their tents, complete with bits of wood to build a fence and so on. One particular group on webbs ash hill looked a right scary bunch, I wouldn't like to be camped near such anti-social types.

I know exactly who you mean Spindles. We had to walk past that group on Top Webbs Ash who had that makeshift orange fencing up all around their campsite with stakes and everything. Utterly ridiculous.

An accurate view, in my opinion, Geebus. I'll be going to Reading as well as Glastonbury, it isn't an either/or thing for me as both have their merits and both have their failings (I am not going to get tutted at by a woman in a dress suit and pearls with a fortnums hamper just because I lit a spliff at Reading and it puts her off her oysters, I'm not likely to get showered with piss while watching a band at glastonbury)

I go to reading for the music, I go to glastonbury for the music and also for something more, but largely still for the music. I'm only going for reading because several acts I'd been hoping for at glastonbury aren't going to be there (basically most of the sunday lineup at reading plus pulp) and if I wait 2 years for the chance they may be past their best by the time I get to see them, where they'll roll out half a set of songs from an album no one bought and drop a few hits in among it (hi faithless!)

Spot on. I think Pennards has suffered from hype in the last 4 or 5 years and for me it's turned into the Ibiza of Glastonbury - it might be the liveliest of the sites but that also means it attracts some complete and utter twunts.

There should be the camping police,only to stop any selfish aggresive people being sods with taping off of areas and taking up masses amount of space instead of camping close together and having reasonable inner group space. Nice pair of scissors and a loud mic would sort them out.

We had a random group of people arrive late wednesday morning in 2009 in west holts area,about 4 in the morning,and a small group of about maybe 7 of us had a very small inner circle area where you might sit for a few mins when getting breakfast before going out to the fest,and this group had a big 4 person tent,and plonked it right in our little area,where we literally could barely squeeze out of our own tents for their tent being that much in the way.

And you could hear them moaning and saying they dont give a sh*t that they arrived really late and invaded the tinest of our space to camp in the small west holts area,in stead of them looking for some reasonable space to camp.

Anyway they got a bit of a moaning back,we actually all very helpfully squeezed our tents extremely tightly together and brought our inner space smaller to allow them to camp in some newly made space just outside our area.

Then some random people,probably them come late lot,"grassed" up to police and or security about some of the group smokin a small bit of the herb,with another group getting mistaken for some of our group anyway.

Just a small bit of respect and considering is needed sometimes.

It's very difficult. What seems like a sensible gap between tents to one person, to another person looks like enough space to pitch. And that perception changes as the field fills up.

... and you have to feel a bit sorry for people who arrive on Thursday or even Friday, are too wet behind the ears to ask a campsite steward, and think that finding a tiny gap in the sea of tents is their only chance of pitching.

In the end, we all manage, don't we?

Given the amount of space at Glastonbury, a sensible gap around a tent shouldn't be enough space to pitch a tent in. Except perhaps one of those barmy little one man things that outdoorsy types take up mountains. If one of those turns up then you can expect to trip over them all weekend - and they should be disappointed if you don't.

Pitch next to someone else, leaving not quite enough space to get a 2 man tent in on the door side of your tent. Then you are sorted. You can get in and out without needing to learn to limbo. That is all you need.

It is definitely true that if you try to pitch with alot of space around you someone will camp in it.

Well said OP. Been going since '89. Every year has been fantastic for different reasons. Glastonbury is home. Other festivals are away. There is no magic way in, gate with no queue or, for that matter, reason why you got through when looking for a ticket and others didn't. 20 sleeps!
