"Don't forget to the vast majority of people, especially those under 30 odd, James are the band that they "sat down" on the dancefloor to when they were students, and possible the ones who sing "that one about getting laid" on American Pie - essentially making them a joke band to a lot of people, along with comments of "why are they still going" etc..."

In the same context, New Order could also be seen as a joke band for their terrible England song, Colpplay a joke band for their Christmas single and The Beatles a joke band for hits like "When I'm 64" and their unrivalled appearances on Childrens Hits compilation albums.

James still have a massive following whether the following is +30 or not. Generally speaking, if band members turn 30 and don't appear on Radio 1 every 15 minutes and don't fill the pages of NME, they get labelled as being "not-trendy and no good" James were part of a major and important music scene in the UK - something that most new bands these days can't lay claim to because most of it has been done before and now its just either hybrids of different genres or recycled sounds. But james have been and continue to be extremely successful. Perhaps their tours of late can't exactly be classed as "arena" tours, but they can still boast being able to sell out 10'000 - 13,000 capacity venues and have been doing so since 1990. Could Pigeon Detectives or Maccabees boast that? I have seen them live once when they weren't really into. That was at Nottingham Rock City in 1998 and Tim got locked in the lav as the rest of the band had made their way onto the stage but Rock City is a toilet anyway!!!

Just realised I'm writing a novel - could have just said why should they give up when they have a massive fanbase and still enjoy success! Like Sir Alex Ferguson.... they'll go on and on, delight many , annoy many.
