Mastodon and PWD haven't done festivals since 2009, In Flames since 2008 (the two latter bands not ever playing Sonisphere before)...

Motorhead have never played Sonisphere before - sure they play festivals in general alot - but that's because they are a popular act, they tour a fair bit, play festivals a fair bit, and still pull fans in, so it makes sense to book them. If you don't like them then don't watch them, it's hardly an issue. PWD are probably one of - if not the - hottest up and coming band at the moment, and are regularly requested, same goes for In Flames and Motorhead who have been heavily requested since the festival first came about, Mastodon haven't toured much since 2009 and are again fairly popular so a good booking imo.

Bloody good announcement, 11 out of 11 bands that I all want to watch - some I'm not as fussed about but will probably watch anyways because they are either A) good live or B) worth watching to some degree. Either way, line up is looking mighty strong so far, can't wait!

EDIT: that's not to mention both Mastodon and In Flames are currently in the studio with new material, which again adds for their case to come back and play festivals.

Pretty sure that 2009 and 2008 is fairly recent enough! would be good to see some bands that havnt done festivals over here for at least 5 years minimum. But every band on the lineup so far has played fests over here within the last few years.

I would watch 11/11 of the announced bands. still absolutely nothing that would make me consider doing soni and download so far. there is not one single signing that is impressive. I love mastodon, but they were seriously yawn in 09. If soni got dillinger, and download didnt - I would consider soni.

every single band on there is standard festival fare.

Metallica playd soni in 09, slipknot were at Download in 09, Biffy Clyro were at Reading last year, Motorhead were at Download last year, Mastodon were at Sonisphere in 2009, Megadeth were at Download last year, Slayer were at Sonisphere last year, Anthrax were at Sonisphere last year. Same old same old. Download feels much more fresh with System Of A Down and Rob Zombie on the bill....however I went to Download last year and pigs arse am i doing that 40minute walk to the arena again every day!
