Ooops. Actually the Monkees were around before Glastonbury festival even existed and there was a thread on here recently with almost unanimous agreement that the Monkees would be an excellent addition to the line-up.

Yes and I agree in general, but I don't think this should exclude any artist from appearing anywhere. What should dictate where an artist/band plays is the demand for that artist and right now nobody knows whether or not Take That would go down well at Glasto, but given the amount of other pop artists that have played at Glasto and been well received, I suspect they would pull a huge crowd and have a lot of people singing along with them (but if there is anybody else on at the same time I would rather see, then I will not be watching).

Anyway, let's see whether or not they get booked. If they do play Glasto and they get a very small attendance or booed off stage, I shall stand corrected and apologise and admit you were right, they and any other pop band should not play Glasto.

However, if they do play and draw a huge crowd and be well received, perhaps you will concede that actually they was a need for them to play

Manufactured acts have existed for at least 60 years.

I'd rather not see manufactured boybands headline glastonbury and would like to see all bands of this nature excluded from the headline slot. Equally, I think cover bands should be excluded from the headline slot at glastonbury.

If they do play and are well received it will prove nothing apart from the fact that there is a section of the glastonbury crowd who are cloth eared and not very discerning.

I certainly would, but would that be allowed to happen by the teams that book the acts? I think not, but allowing one or two said acts amongst all of the other acts booked, isn't going to harm is it and provides many different music styles to many different people attending. The beauty of Glastonbury is surely the huge choice, the diversity of (I thought) music lovers and the general tolerance of music and people?

Think back to when Glasto was in its infancy and that girl punk band appeared (I forget their name) and they were dreading their performance to all these "hippies" yet it went down a treat!

It's not about them having a different musical style, it's about them being a manufactured boy band.

A manufactured band is as intolerable as a cover band for me. And I dont think they deserve a headline slot.

Carl met Pete through his sister. They went and got signed after they started a group.

I personally wouldnt use Wikipedia to prove a point, but I think you are right that they met via his sister.

To me manufactured does not have to only mean that the band were formed via auditions, i would say that manufactured is when an act is moulded by an outside party, into something that sells.

The Libertines were formed, but they had no success, or record deal, until their manager shaped them into a sellable band. Their manager spotted the success that the Strokes were having and told them to adopt that sound if they wanted to make it. Im sure she is quoted as saying that she wanted them to be the British Strokes. You can hear from the legs11 demo that their original sound was not what we hear from their first or second albums. Their manager (sorry for not naming her, i just cant remember her name) also told the band John and Gary that the band was all about Pete and Carl and they were to stay in the background. This was all prior to being signed.

Is that not manufactured?

Some people on here seem to seriously believe that other people will be impressed if they SHOUT REALLY LOUDLY about all the independent/more credible artists they like, while belittling in a really OTT fashion anyone who confesses to liking something commercial.

Where does this attitude come from? I think it must be insecurity. If you really have to work that hard to constantly portray an image of yourself as being that on the money and superior, you're clearly spending too much time worrying about how a group of people that you've never even met before perceive you to be.

Bands I've seen at Glasto in the past and enjoyed include The Wombats, Glasvegas, Coldplay and Keane. I hope that none of the superior beings that deign to communicate with us lower forms on these boards explode with self-righteous laughter after reading that sentence.
