if there is any accuracy in this, I think we've got 2 of the most fantastic possible headliners possible, and only one 'returning' headliner, one who havent played (as a full band) for 8 yrs and have previously played 2 of the most memorable Glasto sets ever. We've had enough of the U2-bashing in the preambles to this year's festie, so that just gets tiresome to read again. We all know the score here, it was a coup in booking them, and I think they deserve kudos if they are indeed going to make up for missing out this year. If u hate them, be happy that their possible rebooking for 2011 means that you're sure to get some incredible alternate options going up against them as a necessary means to thin out the crowds, just like you had this year.

As for Take That, while surely an act with massive record sales, they would look pretty embarassing at the top of the 2011 Glasto tshirt with Radiohead and U2 (if you step outside of the UK, this year's shirt looks a bit silly with Scissor Sisters, Dizzee and Faithless featured prominently as the 4th, 5th and 6th biggest acts of the festival). I can imagine people seeing that and wondering if it was a joke of some sort.

Personally, I feel it would be a shame to waste a prestigious slot on an act like Take That, and I think Glasto would lose a bit of credibility. They won't book a Foo Fighters or Rage Against The Machine again (not that i'm much of a fan of either, mind you) or even Pearl Jam or other legend harder acts (AC/DC) because they're worried about their current popularity bringing a rougher element to the festival that doesn't exist, and yet on the other hand they are now considering opening the doors to the likes of Lady Ga-Ga, Take That, or Kylie. If they must go down this route, I'd rather it be the 'female artist', even Lady Ga-Ga (though i'd certainly give her a miss) over Take That, as at least she's having a bit of a laugh and even if you hate her she is one of the biggest acts on the planet these days (what are Take That's record and box office sales like outside the UK and Ireland?), while Take That are taking themselves very seriously and honestly believe they have/are putting out ground-breaking music.

It was bad enough that I was waiting to meet up with friends this year at the Cider Bus on Saturday at 11AM and because of they're being late, I had to endure 20 minutes of screeches and pre-pubescent cheering from little girls coming over from the pyramid for Tinchy Stryder, and i think we'd get more of the same for Take That, except it'd be at 10 o'clock at night. Jay Z in '08 was a million times more appropriate than Take That.

if they must do Take That, how about oldies slot on sunday? however, if they must headline, then please put an Elbow (Other) or Wilco (Park) up against them, and not vs. the other 2 decent rock bands.

I agree totally, but I think we have to accept that Wilco aren't a Glastonbury band (yet...?). The last time they played, was about midday, to a disappointing scattering of a few hundred/thousand (?) lonely but texceptionally groovy punters. One of my memories of that show was Jeff screamming 'stop shopping' during Kicking Television with his ironic smile on his face...

... and a rather splendid Handshake Drugs... as usual

it was after that performance that I 'decided' that they were in fact, the best current touring band in the world. Which has been confirmed many times since....

Teva I have to disagree with you about a reformed Take That mate. Stick that on the Pyramid on Sunday night and wait for that field to fill up fuller than Stevie last month. 90/100K for that show. No doubts.

As regards the comments about TT being "too soft" - gimme a break wouldya. Scissor Sisters were second headliners this year. Glasto is a soft festival. If you wanna see the likes of Metallica they play countless other fests. No room - nor should there be - at Glasto for heavy metal. It's culture is too alien to that of GF.

missed wilco..i had arrived into London on the thursday from the US but the girlfriend's (now wife) flight wasn't into Gatwick until early Friday AM and we had to pick up our tickets together in Shepton Mallet, so plan was to pick her up from Victoria, rush over to Paddington and train it over in hopes of catching Bright Eyes, Wilco, Elbow. Her flt was late & US Airways lost her luggage, which delayed us as we gathered a few 'necessities' in London, and then by the time we got to Glasto we could only catch the last half of The Walkmen in the new bands tent as a prelude to getting over to see Elbow. Have hated US Airways ever since.

Not to make this a wilco thread, but if Radiohead do play next year, the way things go with 'friends' and all, (i.e. you have to think REM and Radiohead both playing in '03 involved a few mutual conversations), I think there is a chance that this could finally be the year Wilco return. I'm thinking RHead may even have had a say in putting the Flaming Lips right before them in '03 (face it, FLips were a new bands tent act up to then) and they could have a similar setup with Wilco. It may be too far-fetched to suggest a Radiohead/REM/Wilco one-two-three finale on the Sunday, with REM billed as the 'special guests'/'penultimate act of the festival', etc, but it's a longshot dream... REM have a record comingg out next year i believe, and it would probably be REM's last Glasto appearance (Stipey loves the place) and you know they'd rather do it on a year that RHead and perhaps U2 are playing, and i'm sure their ego would take being 2nd billed only under RHead or (perhaps, more likely, given the Milton Keynes Bowl history, 1985) U2 if they are indeed rebooked. not to mention Stipey's been saying Wilco are the greatest thing for over a decade now.

Slash played some hard riffs and it went down well it seems.

Five ponces arsing about on stage to a click track, singing into a voice autotuner in a high pitched voice is alien to Glastonbury too. Take That are a step too far, firmly in the wrong direction imo. We'd be one step away from the little bollox from Milli Vanilli (the one who didnt top himself), turning up and headlining.

Take That were 100% manufactured for first, the gay market (nothing wrong with that etc etc), and 2nd, young teenage girls. The majority of Glastonbury goers are neither. Just because time has passed doesnt mean they're more credible or even a better band. As far as the pop market goes, their earlier stuff was "better". And the Robbie comeback stinks of desperation and an excuse to hike ticket prices.

I wouldnt be there anyway, they dont have one song that wouldnt make my arse cheeks clench with embarrassment.

Imagine my brother or my old man saw me on the TV at Take That, especially with all the other stuff that goes on at Glasto?!! Id be disowned. And rightly so.

Ive never seen Take That or Robbie play - nor had the slightest most minute inkling to do so. This would not change at Glasto should there be anything else on. For example if Ween were playing the Park at the same time I would be on the barrier.

Nal youre more than man enough to own up to saying similar things about Stevie before you decided to go see him. He didnt let the place down by being "soft". He was one of the most perfect headliners in the history of the event.

It sounds bold to say it but not everyone at Glasto has either of your cultured tastes... people just wanna go along and sing along to a great show. Thats what Take That would be. A great show. Their shindig at Croker was a HUGE success Nallo.

Whether the pair of you agree with / admit it or not the VAST majority of girls at Glasto would be as exited to see them as us three were for Bruce. Also every single little kid knows ALL their songs. They'd be brill for families to go along and see. I say to hell with fashion guys. Strength in diversity & more than enough room for the reformed biggest UK boyband ever to headline.

In regard to Radiohead headlining, I just feel that it will be Coldplay instead. I believe that when U2 pulled out this year, Coldplay would have been the first to step in (due to their ties with the fest). If, and it's a bif if, what Michael Eavis said about having the headliners already sorted for next year is true then i'm thinking that Eavis booked Coldplay for 2011 before this years fest, therefore meaning that they couldn't step in for U2 because they already had an agreement in place.

Quite right! Who cares who is headlining anyway! I didn't see one headliner on the Pyramid this year and had my best festival ever! It's not like there won't be anything else on while Take That are on (if they are on). No-one is going to put a gun to your head and force you to stand there and watch them!
