well if what they want happened, guess who the first victim would be (if it happened again)

or even better, what if the armed guard themselves went schitzo (sp?) - would be stupid.

or if a kid in a school went mad and somehow got the gun off said armed guard.

lets fight guns with more guns.

good work NRA!

There was an armed guard at the Columbine school. It didn't do much good there. Edited by eFestivals

I was actually wrong about there being an armed guard at Columbine ... there were actually TWO armed guards at Columbine.

Yep. And its pretty safe to assume there were guns at Fort Hood military base too but he still managed to kill 13 people.

and that gets to show just how empty the NRA's idea is.

There was a SWAT team called at Columbine and a load of police there too but they didn't get into the school until way after the shooters had killed themselves. Outside being shot at for 30 minutes through the window.

I can't get over the NRA. Really can't.

  • 2 weeks later...

With another wave of major public sector cuts coming next few months - indubitably.

I'm starting to think it's what the Tories want, and they have no plan to lead us out of it, only to push the poverty gap so wide they can do what they like with us 'plebs'.

There's a very interesting article by Monbiot in today's Guardian, which is putting forwards the idea that the rise in violent crime during the 20 century, and it's subsequent recent fall, is all the result of lead poisoning (from petrol, pipes, and paint).

I've no idea how solid that idea might end up being (there's an amount of uncertainty about it currently), but it certainly seems to make logical sense.

The article is here:-

No idea whether his latest piece is accurate or not.

Monbiot is however, one of the biggest hypocrites I've ever had the misfortune to hear speak though.

no more or less of a hypocrite but less of liar than one of your major heroes, who had the audacity to claim that the rich aren't getting a tax cut of 5% in April on TV this morning.

But anyway, my interest was in the research that Monbiot was talking about (which is nothing to do with him), and what it said. He didn't claim it was beyond doubt, but the correlation between lead being easily accessible in the everyday environment and violence in society is an interesting one.

If it's right, it explains the sudden fall in violent crime in the last decade or so, which none of the standard ideas about crime can account for.

There are loads of theories one of which is the availability of abortion, which has a similar corelation when put against crime figures in the US. Another was the rise of the video game which again shows a similar relationship. Very ironic seeing as people used to say they cause violence.

video games could explain as rise in violent, but not it's fall in the last decade (when violent gaming has become far more widespread than previously).

I'm not sure how abortion figures might correlate for the fall. Have abortion rates been dropping in the USA?

Why so often do you, at best, try and put words in my mouth, or at worst, lie?
I don't need to put words in your mouth or lie about your affinity to the tories. It's in your sig.

And I've not lied about IDS's lie.

Sensitive soul, aren't you?

You threw in 'hypocrite' which has no bearing on what Monbiot has written about in that article. So I threw back hypocrite and liar which also has no link to that article, but which does have a link to your post. It's certainly no less relevant to preceding posts than you did.

The gaming theory is more about young folk staying in more and how relationships have changed. I will try to find it.

I have just Googled the abortion paper.

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Impact_of_Legalized_Abortion_on_Crime

it didn't take reading much of that to see that it's not a global phenomenon, and so doesn't stand up to scrutiny as well (from what Monbiot has written) as the lead theory does.

    • I saw this just after it was posted yesterday, I barely paid attention to it. I didn't realise it had blown up in the way it has. I'm sure (kind of) that Sziget will be unaffected - it brings in billions of huf over a very short period. Its consumption, compared to the rest of Budapest, will be tiny in reality. That said, nothing wrong with encouraging people to use less energy whether it's now or in the future.
